IIHF has recently edited many tournaments in regard to loss of Russia and Belarus. But what will they do, after this two national teams could come back? This is still unknown.

What should they do?

Will there be a WCH with 18 teams? Temporarily or full time?

What to do with WCH U20 2022/2023?

Btw. Russia has still WCH for year 2023.

My guess is that they will be put in Div 1A which will be expanded to 8 teams for that year

Seems like the easiest way to solve it. 18 teams is too many for the top division.

I'd just outright ban them for 3 Olympic cycles *12 years. no talk of any participation of any athlete from either of those two countries for the full extent of the ban. After 12 years review it, and if conditions are not met, extend the ban for another 12 years.

And I give Ukraine a permanent spot in the top division for the next 12 years. They can recruit Ukrainian-Canadians to fill out the roster. Whatever the cost. whatever it takes.

I don't see them coming back before Putin is gone.

Consider how many years they will be out, then put them that amount of levels down.

I would guess they will take cues from the IOC which will take cues from the status of sanctions in general. But it is way too premature to even hypothesize as it depends entirely on how this war ends.

One possibility is that there is a peace treaty and many sanctions are eventually dropped in exchange for Russia footing part of the bill for rebuilding Ukraine (a few examples- a reconstruction tax imposed on all Russian imports / exports, OR oligarchs frozen cash/assets redistributed to Ukraine, OR money taken from Russias foreign accounts ...). At that point I would see the international sporting bodies looking for their easiest way out of this which would probably include Russia being relegated to lower divisions and having to work their way back up ala Juventus.

This is way above the pay grade of us plebs to theorize though!

What kind of stupid shit is this? Was the US banned from major sports in 1999 or 2003? For invasions that most world countries condemned ?

Why do the athletes have to suffer for the actions of politicians?

Talk about a tough call... I find this stuff really tricky to come up with a great answer personally.

Eg. Czechs were gifted division 1 while Slovaks were totally screwed in Division 2 (or whatever it was) and Slovakia didn't do anything wrong!

If all things clear up to a satisfactory level - probably toss them back in the A pool. Or have a playin which could be fun...

Russia and Belarus in a summer tourney with the lowest 2 nations at the World's. Top 2 get the spots the following Spring.

Not sure about 1999, but the US absolutely should have been banned in 2003 and again in 2017-20.

Why do the athletes have to suffer for the actions of politicians?

The athletes are proxies of the politicians and all sports are political. They always have been.

Unless it has changed. As of Feb 1st..they were relegated out of the top level. All their games go down as losses.

Problem is Russia supposed to host in 2023. They have been suspended from hosting and it looks like Swiss will jump in to host.

It is not official but sounds like it will be made official prior to the gold medal game

Athletes may acquire a different nationality and will be eligible to represent that country if they so wish.

It should depend on the behaviour of Russia and Belarus.

Basically this and given current circumstances and past National behavior at the Olympics with doping ect the onus is on them not the federation but we all know it will be open arms........

IIHF rules prohibit you from playing for a national team if you’ve already represented another nation

After 1460 days they, too, become eligible.

Recently the IIHF has also been granting exceptions to this rule quite generously which could be applied also to formerly Russian athletes that want to rejoin the international hockey community.

Not for very long time. The relationships and trust between IIHF, every countries' own IHF and RIHF have been broken for very long time. It will take decades to grow it back.

your silly, kindergarten whataboutisms aside, because innocent civilians are forced to suffer from the actions of despots and tyrants. 12 year ban. only reviewable after 12 years. And if strict conditions are not met, then extend it for another 12.

That’s not going happen. Russia will likely be back in the IIHF competitions next year or the year after that.
