The problem is not Greene. He is a role player with significant contributions to his name who is currently looks overpaid because of his bad season this year. Matt may still have several good seasons ahead of him.

The real problem is Regher. He's too slow, too old and paid too much. However if we win the Cup, it may wind up that Regher retires. If that happens our problems are solved. We can re-sign both Greene and probably Mitchell for less, add the cap going up to the amounts saved and after Gabby re-signs we'll have enough to sign a decent UFA defenseman.

How old do you think Regehr is, 38? He'll be turning 34 later this month and Mitchell will be turning 37 later this month. So you think Mitchell will re-sign and Regehr retires?

Matt Greene has appeared in 38 regular season games over the past two seasons. He's become an injury prone pylon who is only good for taking bad penalties. Least that's what he's only been able to do over the past two seasons.

I would rather have anyone than Orpik, he is slow and would be a huge down grade as he will only get worse. Would rather keep Greene and/or Mitchell.

I was very critical of Regehr earlier in the year but he has been solid for a couple of months now.

As for Greene, he is just a guy who was never fast to begin with who has lost a step or two and relegated him from 3rd pairing defenseman to fringe NHL'er. Doesn't matter if he is 31 or 41 he isn't getting that step back.

If you use your own Aaron Miller argument, Greene and Regher play similar hard hitting games. Mitchell is rugged but is more about position and hockey sense. He looks good too while old Regher is old Regher. Your argument that the 30 year old may be washed up doesn't apply to the even older Regher?

Just comparing ages between apples and oranges doesn't work.

I'm not even going to talk about how much more money Regher makes since he was re-signed as a potential UFA deal.

Do you know how much Regehr signed for? $3M. That's $500K less than Mitchell's cap hit, and please, Regehr has been far better than Mitchell this season.

And Greene is earning more than Regehr if you look at real dollars. His cap hit is only slightly less. I'm going to guess you are probably unaware of these facts.

Your bias against Regehr is clouding your vision and judgement.

I really like Matt Green, but I'd only re-sign him if Mitchell retires, we can't sign a decent Dman from UFA, and if Bodbarchuk can't step up to fill the 7th spot.

Greene will get big money elsewhere. The Kings like Mitchell better and I don't think WM will get much notice on the UFA market so he may just retire if no one picks him up.

Kings could go with...

Doughty-Muzzin
RR-Voynov
McNabb-Martinez

WM retires and Greene walks and Kings sign a #7 guy journeyman. I don't see WM signing and only playing occasionally and I don't see the Kings sitting McNabb.

Greene will get more money elsewhere. The fact that his wife is from LA won't likely make a difference because this is his time to cash in on a decent contract.

No he won't, the Guy has to prove he can still play in this league and stay healthy......

No one is going to offer him a big contract too prove all that over.

Bods is not in the Kings plans, He has too fight Gravel/McNabb/Forbort for a roster spot....

Bods is not going too see Ice in a Kings UNI if you ask me.

I have heard as much. It is sort of sad in a way but I still think that he will see some time in the NHL with another team.

Hickey made his way onto the Isles and they like him a bunch. I think Bods can play.

These are still the greatest things Greene has ever done;

He just turns around and absolutely kills Carter with a cross check. Devils had to think twice about going to the net when he was there for the rest of the series. 2 mins well worth it.

And this! Oh. My. God. This. Just no-sells a puck to the face and celebrates a win like nothing happened.

I actually wont miss that. Kings got a lot of goals against because he was only interested in the player instead of the puck.

I hope Regher will be better this playoffs. Last playoffs, both him and Muffin couldnt get the puck out of the zone. That caused a lot of problems.

Regehr and Voynov wont be able to move the puck no, but the damage that does should be neutralized by our 3rd pairing being very good at it, and being able to roll 4 possession lines. As long as our 2nd pairing isnt on the ice with our 4th line, they should be fine

This is why you don't move Defenders premature.

Mitchell and Drew both hurt now right before the playoff's.

Greene always had his limitations and was always a third pairing guy, but his character triumphed over what would have normally pushed the guy into the press box or the A. The Kings got a lot more out of him than they probably expected to when he got there, and now it's just unfortunate that he's coated with a bit of rust, and some medical impediments. That being said, I wouldn't count him out just yet... there's some big hockey left to be played, and he may be called upon to step up and deliver.

Let Matt Greene and Willie Mitchell leave as free agents and sign Brooks Orpik. Call up McNabb and let him be the 7th defensemen, so the kings can use the extra money to resign Gaborik. Put Orpik with Alec Martinez for the 3rd pair. I like Greene but the number one thing the kings need to do is get Gaborik signed.

I don't see Orpik as an upgrade on Mitchell and especially when he'll likely command a million or two more. Maybe let Greene go, but I'm one in favor of keeping Mitchell at a slightly reduced rate.

I absolutely agree. Orpik makes way to many mental errors to fit with us. I like his grit but the trade off is too great.
