What Should the new Atlanta NHL team be named? | Page 16 | HFBoards - NHL Message Board and Forum for National Hockey League
  • Xenforo Cloud upgraded our forum to XenForo version 2.3.4. This update has created styling issues to our current templates, this is just a temporary look. We will continue to work on clearing up these issues for the next few days and restore the site to it's more familiar look, but please report any other issues you may experience so we can look into. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

What Should the new Atlanta NHL team be named?

Look, I agree that the Flames are largely irrelevant to today's situation other than optics to some people.

But I also think comparing them to the Bulldogs is ridiculous.

Both things can be true.
I guess, but comparing those two specific franchises is not the point. Everyone on the site that's all bothered by Atlanta possibly getting a team keeps brining up "losing two teams". One way or the other, including either the Flames or the Bulldogs is irrelevant. So, if the poster I'm having a discussion with says Atlanta has had two teams, then so has Quebec (and probably a number of other cities).

Confuse everyone with another legacy name.

Atlanta Whalers. And then go with that beautiful green jersey.

Can they use the thrashers IP? I thought that stuff moves with and resides with the relocated team, even though they changed their name they still own those rights? No?

Atlanta Lakers makes more sense than Los Angeles Lakers.

This has possibilities, especially for the old school pro rasslin' guys my age. Imagine the team coming out to the ice with THIS song playing. Who knows? Maybe they can even get Michael "P.S." Hayes to introduce the team on opening night.:laugh::laugh: #BadStreetAtlantaGA

The response I was waiting for! NWA/WCW or Lynard Skynard related response.

Atlanta Third times the charm? Has a pro sports team ever had a third chance before?

Since it feels like we've gone through this before, I'd name them the Atlanta GroundHogDays

Searching the Trademark office the Atlanta Thrashers trademark is current and owned by the NHL.

Even if not - since the old Thrashers team was given the rights to the old Jets IP and became Jets 2.0 it would be the height of churlishness to deny a new Atlanta team the rights to the Thrashers IP.

Well, it's really BOTH rasslin' AND Skynyrd related, as I'm sure you already know. As evidence, here is the Freebirds making their debut on what was then Georgia Championship Wrestling (on Superstation TBS) back in 1980. For those who don't already know, note what song is playing in the background.

As one of the few if only real Thrashers fans left on this site, shame on people for making fun of our fans and the city. If your teams had horribly inept ownership you would know what it was like to have your team stolen from your city.

As to the question: I have already been told by a friend that was on one of the local groups that tried to buy the Thrashers and keep them in Atlanta that the NHL has already approved expansion to Atlanta and the team name/logo will be the Thrashers.

The NHL currently owns the rights to the name/logo and it will be included in the expansion fee.

Personally? I would move away from Thrashers and go with Firebirds. It is both unique and yet also a tribute to both the Flames and Thrashers. But it sounds like the new owners have already decided on the Thrasher name/logo.

I was told to expect an announcement of the Atlanta expansion team as early as this June.

The Future Nordiques, because Quebec is pretty much the only credible Canadian city in which an Atlanta franchise hasn't been relocated to yet.
Bettman would never allow that. That trembling midget hates Canada.

It's not that I don't believe you. It's a small world and your story is no less incredible than that time my mom had Hulk Hogan's wife as her patient at the hospital while pregnant. Is there any way you can prove it at all or is this one of those "take you at your word stories" like the one about my mom?

“Non-traditional” markets make up some of the best attendance in the league. Tampa, Dallas, Florida, and Carolina are all top-10 and Nashville has been sold out all year.

Not blaming the fans from staying away from San Jose? How about the Thrashers who only made the playoffs once in its entirety. And got swept.

And you’re using the economic excuse for Peg. The rest of Canada seems to have good attendance. Let’s also not forget that the Thrashers left at the tail end of the worst economy since the Great Depression.

As the team has improved so has the attendance in Winnipeg this year. Sorry, there are just better options than Atlanta who has tried twice and failed twice. I would actually look to Salt Lake City for the next relocation as a potential destination. Or Canada again. Quebec, Hamilton, etc.

Really? Their last 5 home games were: 12,571, 13,363, 13,515 14,189, and 11,468.

Apparently, the NHL has spoken with SLC. We'll see.

Hamilton? Ha...well, good luck with that.

Yeah, that's the part that makes coming on this site so frustrating sometimes. People poop-post the same dumb stuff over and over and over and over and over again, thinking they're being clever or original, and show no intellectual curiosity whatsoever about the underlying truth of what actually happened. It's so much easier to say "bad market failed twice" than actually acknowledge that the ownership group literally were verifiably racist, lying scoundrels.

To me, the reality of the situation is SOOO much more interesting than rehashing the same tired and factually baseless jokes. But as a law school professor once told me, you gotta throw the feed where the short-legged hogs can get it sometimes.

I'm a former season ticket holder for the Thrashers and was active on the old Thrashers message board. I have the messages from my friend and another plugged in former Thrasher season ticket holder that has heard the same thing.
I understand the skepticism. I don't know how to prove it other than let me see...

I'm not comfortable sharing private conversations in DMs. I've been on here for years. I'm not lying. If you don't want to believe me, that's your choice and I get it. I'm just saying what I have been told by two credible sources.

I don't know what their name should be, but if they aren't knocking on the door of JK Moving Services, Bellhop and Allied Van Lines, their sponsorship team needs a kick in the butt.

I'd say the Thrashers is still a good name to use, unless they are afraid of some bad juju associated with the name.

I am just thinking about a hockey market with a large surrounding population. I know the NHL for whatever reason never wanted Hamilton, but it doesn't mean they shouldn't have.

The Toronto Maple Leafs won't let Hamilton happen. Even if the NHL wanted them to, I don't think they can.
