What Should the new Atlanta NHL team be named?

And the Thrashers were not actually failing in terms of fans and finances in 2011. The ownership group, which was only interested in the Hawks, had to buy both the Thrashers and the Hawks to get control of the arena. They made the purchase, got what they wanted, then immediately started trying to get rid of the Thrashers, while making it very clear they would no longer be allowed to play at Philips Arena. There were multiple interested local buyers, but ASG refused to allow the team use of the only NHL-level arena in the region, so there was no choice but to move.

They were kicked out by shitty owners who never wanted to own a hockey team. It wasn't a case of a team failing like teams like, oh, the Nordiques did.

You can't ignore the fact that the Thrashers had the 3rd worst average attendance in the NHL ahead of only the Coyotes and Islanders at 13,469. That was 72% capacity. That isn't great at all.

Then Quebec is out. Winnipeg got a team back. Lots of teams go through periods of attendance struggles. Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, Ottawa, and the Islanders to name a few. The Sharks, Jets, and Sabres currently. Can’t keep moving teams.

Quebec and Winnipeg lost their NHL team once. Minnesota did too. Winnipeg and Minnesota got it back. There is history with Chicago and Boston and Pittsburgh and even the Islanders. I don't see a reason to give a team a 3rd chance. And do we really trust the NHL's judgment at this point? Who in their right mind would keep a team in Arizona at this point with them playing in an arena that looks like a practice facility? A team moving right now wouldn't bother me a whole lot because there are a couple that should move. But as long as they don't expand anymore beyond 32 teams.

That’s more than Winnipeg and San Jose this year. So? We just going to keep moving teams?

Thrashers obviously.

Confusing future fans between which franchise is which between the current Jets, former Jets, current Thrashers, and former Thrashers.

Amazing.

Quebec has lost a team twice and Winnipeg is currently struggling. And history doesn’t pay the bills. The Islanders and Blackhawks had low attendance for years.

It has been better lately as the team improved in Winnipeg this year. But I am not saying teams should move outside of Arizona. That's a no-brainer. But I am just saying that if a team moves I wouldn't move it to a non-traditional hockey market that lost its team twice. Surely Atlanta isn't the best option out there.

San Jose traditionally has had a good fan base. Can you blame the fans for staying away this year though? Winnipeg is going through what most in Canada are going through and that is poor economic times that don't look like they are getting better by any means.

“Non-traditional” markets make up some of the best attendance in the league. Tampa, Dallas, Florida, and Carolina are all top-10 and Nashville has been sold out all year.

Not blaming the fans from staying away from San Jose? How about the Thrashers who only made the playoffs once in its entirety. And got swept.

And you’re using the economic excuse for Peg. The rest of Canada seems to have good attendance. Let’s also not forget that the Thrashers left at the tail end of the worst economy since the Great Depression.

Don’t make excuses

The Thrashers’ lowest attended years (cited above) correspond to the great recession which disproportionately affected Atlanta

Historically, Atlanta’s average attendance would Have sold out or been close to a sell out in most of the barns in the league (Philips Arena has over 19k capacity for hockey)

what new Atlanta NHL team?

The Nordiques. Makes it easier when they move north after 12 years or so.

If you're thinking that way, then why not just name them the Colorado Springs Coppers? Makes it easier when they move west in 18 years.
