No dumber than putting a team in Quebec

Why?

Quebec City has a population of 600k and drew just as many fans, if not more than Atlanta. A city of 6 million

The only reason Quebec doesn’t still have a team is that there was an American billionaire who wanted to move the team and the Canadian dollar is sometimes really weak.

The Nordiques didn’t have the issues with interest that Atlanta has. The NHL doesn’t need another Coyotes situation.

The attendance got so bad, that by 2010 the Thrashers were at times drawing less than 10,000 fans during games. This led to some creative, but also pretty desperate attempts to get fans back to the games. For example, the team pulled a marketing stunt where the Thrasher’s mascot “Thrash” was arrested over trying to steal a Zamboni from the team’s practice rink. The Atlanta police department, in on the joke of course, charged Thrash with “Grand-Theft Zomboni”, and the team announced that the only way to bail Thrash out of jail was if the team sold 5,000 more tickets to their December 2010 home games.

The Nordiques survived from the WHA days, had issues with being ‘too French’, got their asses kicked by the lindros decision and as the smallest market in (maybe) all of sports still could pull in fans.

Having a team in Arizona sounds dumb but is apparently worth it for some reason.

They could make it work in Atlanta, but that would require competence.

Which city would they end up relocating them to? Quebec? Lol

Atlanta has failed twice due to no interest from the population of Atlanta. I don’t think hockey is any more popular their than it was the last two times

I said earlier, Milwaukee.

Apparently they love hockey.

I'm not saying anything other than what I'd love to see. NHL knows better than I do.

Quebec has lost two teams as well. If you’re going to count the Flames, which moved 45 years ago, then all teams count. And Atlanta didn’t move because of lack of interest. It’s been discussed everywhere.

Hey… we can name Quebec the Déménagers (Relocators) and then Boulder Colorado will have a good chance at a team.

Isn’t that how the joke works?

Small market Canadian teams have different challenges than large market American teams.

The problems large market American teams have, like Atlanta, is that people in Atlanta don’t really want a hockey team.

Business men and the league do, though. So sure they’ll just keep bashing their heads against the wall to force it to happen. But the league becomes such a joke when there are teams like Arizona or Atlanta that no one in their cities cares enough about to buy a ticket to watch

The article I posted said they were having attendance issues, drawing less than 10k to the arena

They never drew less than 10k. A better reason why the team was moved:

Small market Canadian teams have to deal with being small. We’re seeing that play out now.

Again...if you're going back 45 years and including the Flames, then Quebec has had 2 chances (going back 100 years is just as silly as going back 45).

And wouldn't the fact that the Thrashers were never good mean that the city IS deserving of another team (whatever a city deserving a team actually means)?

Why go to a known failed market though? If you want to dismiss 1980 then fine, but 2011 was not that long ago. Give other places a shot first.

Atlanta relocated twice, most recently just 13 years ago. Hard to believe the NHL is thinking of going back.

Maybe the NHL’s thinking going forward is in terms of franchises, not cities. Get 34-36 franchises on the map, and just move them around as needed. Especially with city boards so willing to pay for arena construction.

You don’t know what you are talking about. The ownership screwed the Thrashers and the fans the second time around.

And the Thrashers were not actually failing in terms of fans and finances in 2011. The ownership group, which was only interested in the Hawks, had to buy both the Thrashers and the Hawks to get control of the arena. They made the purchase, got what they wanted, then immediately started trying to get rid of the Thrashers, while making it very clear they would no longer be allowed to play at Philips Arena. There were multiple interested local buyers, but ASG refused to allow the team use of the only NHL-level arena in the region, so there was no choice but to move.

They were kicked out by shitty owners who never wanted to own a hockey team. It wasn't a case of a team failing like teams like, oh, the Nordiques did.
