Yeah they intentionally chose two awful colors to replace them. Have to assume their reasoning was, "Mauve seats suck" would never catch on.
It was the early 90's. teal and mauve were somewhat "popular" colors then. I can't tell you why, but it seemed like everything had teal in it for awhile.

MSG is technically no longer the oldest building in the league. With the arrival of the Kraken, they now officially play in the oldest building.

Pre-renovation the sell out capacity was always 18,200 was it not? Now it's 18,006 which seems odd to spend $800M to eliminate 194 seats

With MSG and Climate Pledge Arena, there’s a bit of a Ship of Theseus paradox.

MSG was massively renovated, however Climate Pledge Arena was 100% gutted. The only thing Climate Pledge Arena has in common with KeyArena is the roof.

MSG is far more similar to the original than Climate Pledge Arena.

Oh I remember. I actually attended the first preseason game in the fall of 1990 when the Garden was reopened to fans after the "renovation". The fan reception to the new colors was less than enthusiastic. The concourse upgrades were decent considering what was there before & the limited time they actually spent working on it.

The addition of the suites & the loss of a huge chunk of blue seats was the defining legacy of that 1st renovation. It symbolized the shift from die hard Ranger fans to the overwhelming corporate presence that continues to this day.

I remember there was an article in the Daily News that chronicled the amount of Blue-Seaters that were being displaced to the "Greens" or being priced out completely. Fans that had been sitting together since the building was opened in '68, many who had moved over from the 50th street Garden. Sigh...

It's like the story of George Washington's axe. Both the handle & the blade have been replaced, but it's still the original!

It’s also like the Stanley Cup. For starters, isn’t the original and was created in the 60s, and they change the bands once it gets filled up.

The first time I saw it completely renovated was sometime around Christmas 1990 home from college. I think my first statement was "you don't win with teal."

My uncle still had his tickets in 340 when the renovations were going on, and remember him getting upset that the price increases were changing from 50 cents a ticket each year to close to $2.

Back then, about 90% of the tickets were season tickets. I remember it being really difficult to find random tickets to games unless you happened to get lucky. I kind of remember Blue Seaters saying something along those lines when their season cost was changing from about $475 or so to $800 or so per ticket.

340 is where I sat for most of the 94 playoff run.

To your point, in Sept '88 when I started my senior year in high school, I took the LIRR to MSG the day individual seats went on sale for the 88-89 season. Had never been to a NYR-NYI game & wanted to buy 3 seats. Best I could find were Blue seats behind one of the goals, last or next to last row for a Sunday night game in late November.

Had I gotten a job a few months earlier, I would have joined you. Finally started getting paid for work in March '94, LOL.

Uncle dropped the tickets after the 92-93 season because the people he shared them with had a kid and their friends didn't want them as often. He had moved to NW Bergen County almost on the NY line and didn't have train service like he did before. He was frustrated with the season and started to believe the curse was real. And I didn't have the money yet to take them...

My senior year was '87-'88. I had a friend who excused himself from class and went to a pay phone at 10 AM in school. Ticketmaster or whatever it was then was a local call. Had his dad's credit card. Think he was able to get two or three games in the Greens. Later that year, we had an AP English field trip to NYC to see Fences with James Earl Jones. We got to meet him after the performance too. That was really cool. Wednesday, December 9, 1987. Rangers played Montreal that night. Somehow we finagled tickets and we were allowed to stay in the city for the game because a friend of my uncles was at the game. Something that could never happen today.

Minor gripe but f*** Covid-itis and start taking cash again at the draft beer stands. I love these guys but they are completely hobbled by the slowww payment systems and having to tutor ppl on how to leave a tip “on screen.” Five to ten minutes queued up between periods is insane.

Yeah, don't get why they aren't accepting cash at the fixed concession stands. The mobile beer sellers and a few beer carts only accept cash. So what's up with that.

Ticketmaster's number in NYC was (718) 507-TIXX! I remember dialing it a thousand times trying to get Springsteen tickets in high school. Another impossible ticket to get back then. The internet is like cheating in comparison. Sigh.

Anyone else remember when MSG had tickets color coded to the level that your seats were in? First event I ever attended at MSG with Red tickets (other than the circus when I was 4or 5) was the WWF in '83 when Bob Backlund lost the belt to the Iron Sheik. Some idiot, probably planted by the WWF, started circling the inner concourse between the Red's & the Oranges waving an Iranian flag yelling & screaming victory chants. People started throwing pretzels & drinks on the guy but he kept going until some guy yelled "*UCK THIS" and charged the dude. Then about 10 more guys followed suit & really messed that poor dude up. I was 12 at the time & sat there in stunned disbelief. @will1066 @Machinehead

Lol I remember those WWF days at MSG.

When Backlund was counted out to the Sheik & lost the belt, my cousin who was about 20 & had a few beers that night, turns to my dad & with a straight face deadpans, "Sad day for America"
I just literally laughed out loud.

One time at a show, I got the nastiest death stare from Butch Reed that scared me for days after the show. To be young and naive.

Being colorblind I never noticed anything about the color of the tickets. I'd get my tickets from a TM outlet or MSG and avoided calling over the phone. I worked right next to a disc-o-rama which had a ticketmaster machine in the back. All the machines were corrupt and paid off by brokers. By the time you called in those guys each took 30-40 of the best seats in the house before they let people in the line buy tickets. They usually let me get a punch in since they knew me but the only way I knew to get ranger tickets was to camp out at MSG as otherwise it was impossible.

The tickets from TM came on bland ticketmaster paper but MSG had the huge tickets which I loved as it just seemed more authentic. Eventually I got a mini-plan in the 90s and would pick up the tickets at the garden with the nice MSG ticket stock, even when I eventually got full seasons back in '07 the tickets came on MSG stock that I'd pick up at the box office. The ticketmaster tickets could easily be counterfeited as the stock was held by all the ticketmaster outlets. One of the playoff games in the 94 cup run, can't remember which one, a couple of german tourists right in front of me were taken out of the line because their ticket were counterfeit.

Haha!

Now we're really getting off topic here, but I'm sure you recall the WWF would hold mid-week matches at the Ridgewood Grove Arena & some other small venues. About once or twice a year they would come to Holy Cross High School in Bayside, right near my house. Same year, 1983, my 3 buddies & I scored seats right where the wrestlers would make their way to the ring. I'm not proud to admit this, but I hocked a loogie & spit it right on Dr D. David Schultz' back. He turned around & gave me a death stare & probably would've killed me had I not weighed 75 lbs or so. Yes I'm still an idiot.

Totally...talk about young & dumb. I did it like he was not human. So wrong.

So the same night, after the final match with the Iron Sheik who was on the bill that night, people are filing out into the street when some idiot yells, "It's the Iron Sheik's car!" About 50 guys start rocking this Monte Carlo back & forth trying to flip it upside down. Luckily they failed, cause someone surely would've been crushed to death, but then they proceeded to throw rocks through every window & let the air out of all the tires. To this day I'm convinced it was some poor slob's car & not the Sheiks. Funny shit back then.

Yeah the MSG tickets from the MSG box office were way cooler than the generic ticketron or ticketmaster tickets.

Speaking of tickets, still bummed out that MSG decided to go paperless. I liked the actual season ticket stock. This was my first hockey game ever. Rangers won 8-4 vs NJD. Also check out that price!View attachment 552134

I was at that game. I still have my stubs somewhere for that playoff year & the '94 run.

That was the night the Rodney King protests marched down 7th Ave & scared the shit out of a bunch of bridge & tunnel hockey fans.

Yup! A neighbor handed 2 tix to this game to my dad. Dad then handed them to me and told me to take my brother. I was 16 and brother was 14. I also remember my mom gave me a handful of quarters and told me to call her when we got to MSG since the riots were happening in LA and people were afraid riots could break out in NYC. I was immediately hooked at attending games. Since May 1, 1992 I have now attended 629 hockey games (NHL, AHL, CHL, NWHL, NCAA) of those 629, 527 have been NY Rangers games at MSG.

There was also a New Jersey number that wasn't ever really advertised. Then I learned that all Ticketmaster phone numbers EXCEPT Baltimore/Washington were the SAME. I was able to snag tickets to one of the Springsteen Asbury Park Holiday shows in 2001 by calling a Detroit number.

in 1984, my dad bought me and a few friends tickets to a Mets - Braves doubleheader as a gift for my 8th grade graduation. I was naive then and liked the Mets. The day he called to get the tickets was the same day Springsteen tickets for the Meadowlands Arena went on sale. We didn't have a car with an FM radio yet, and even though my dad was kind of a Springsteen fan, he completely forgot about the concerts. Anyway, it took forever for him to get through, but he got 5 tickets. So we go over to Shea, no tickets. End up buying additional ones at the gate. He gets in touch with Ticketmaster or whoever they were then and they INSIST he bought tickets to SPRINGSTEEN. Somehow he was able to find out the screwup and the name and phone number of the girl who actually bought the Bruce tickets. He got in touch with her and told her to use our name when picking up the tickets, and even sent her a handwritten note if the idiots at the Meadowlands gave her trouble.

Ticketmaster effed up a Springsteen show on me in Chapel Hill, but at least that was an issue of a guy with my exact name, and they took care of the issue. That said, Kenan Stadium didn't have ticket scanners so the cancelled tickets could have worked. Good thing the guy in Raleigh with my exact name was honest and went to the seats he bought.

Yes, I do remember the Garden tickets color coded to section. I still have a bunch of Green ticket stubs from 1979-1986. They were also closer to a cardboard stock. By 1988, they were using bigger tickets with images on them for season tickets, but the generic tickets were typical Ticketmaster stock.

WWF matches used to be shown LIVE on MSG in the early 80's. I can remember playing in a Little League championship Game 1 on a Tuesday in June, and everyone rushing home at the end of the game because some match was on MSG that was "important" (thinking Backlund vs, Snuka?)

Boxing used to be on MSG a bit too, matches called by SAM ROSEN.
