What is wrong with Timo Meier?

He's just not that good. Despite his physical gifts, a low IQ and selfish player.
E Kane is kind of like that and he seems to do fine?
NJ doesn't need him to be a point per game player, they have enough of those. What they needed was to get bigger, more physical, and more difficult to play against.

If he scores 30 goals and plays like a bastard in the playoffs - that's all they need from him. He didn't get many points in the playoffs last year, but he was definitely a disruptor on the ice and made some major contributions in the Rangers series that didn't show up on the box score.

That being said - he has been playing with his head up his ass the first three games. I don't mind the lack of production, he started slow last season not scoring a goal until Game 10 but still finished with 40. He scores in bunches, that's fine. It's the stupid, lazy, unnecessary penalties that are hurting the team. Ruff was correct to bench him in the 3rd last night, and once he did the team responded by coming back from 4-0 down to nearly tie the game in the final seconds.

He's far from the only one. That whole line has been lazy and low energy. Hischier and Mercer are also having a really terrible start to the year.

It will get figured out, NJ has too much talent for this not to work.
Agreed. Granato always talks about the bigger guys needing more time to get going in the beginning of the season, so it's almost definitely just that, as much as I'd like to see him fail. The Devils have played like 3.6% of their games, so let's see what actually happens when there's a real sample size.

We all like to talk about how PL Dubois is all about the lifestyle, and I do suspect Meier is more into the lifestyle than winning the Cup. I mean he loves the trsvelling and the tourism, loves watches and here he is wearing Gucci which is a common brand for him. His best friend when he was in San Jose was Evander Kane and you know that pairing means a lot of Vegas nights. It wasn't a surprised that he started to finally get it to click once Kane left San Jose and he could focus.

He moonlights as a nomadic hockey player. Coming to the rescue of last place beer league teams across the world. Some may call him a ringer, but, in reality, he is showing the lovable losers how it truly feels to win a game.

I always thought he’s overrated. After getting that contract, I knew he would slow down big time

It's the system. Meier is very efficient in a system like DeBoer's. Heavy, possession based hockey, cycling, holding onto pucks is his kinda thing. SJ used to have the ideal players for this system to smother opponents. Meier, Hertl, Thornton etc. NJ is built differently and unless I'm missing something, Ruff is kinda the exact opposite of DeBoer, preferring uptempo hockey.

I think Meier and NJ was always a misunderstanding. I never understood why they traded for him and why he signed there. Yes, Meier is still a good player but I'm not sure Meier will be able to fully adjust to a system he's not built for, teammates he has little chemistry with. Lindy Ruff is great at getting the best out of many players but I'm not convinced Timo Meier is one of them.
some players take time to adjust to their new teams!!

Ilya Kovalchuk wasnt great with NJ until his second or third year and then carried us to a Cup final!

Taylor Hall stunk his first season then did decent for a while then won a Hart trophy and led us to the playoffs!

i think Meier will figure it no problem; its just a matter of when not if!!

Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I tell ya, I gotta plead ignorance on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing was frowned upon, ya know....because I've worked in a lot of offices and I tell you, people do that all the time.

It's not wrong. Sharks fans have known this about Timo-Kane for a long time. Bad influences are bad influences.

He'll wind up being fine the next few years. I thought he was overrated pre-trade and was glad the Canes didn't trade for him and hand him that contract but he's still a great player and will settle in. I just don't think the contract will age super well on the back end.

Meier sucks. Couldnt believe the frenzy around him as a trade target and UFA. He rode Karlssons Norris revival coat tails and got paid. Any team singing him based on that was never going to get value.

So which person is he going to casino's with now? You said it got better when Kane left, and now its worse. Clearly you believe he relapsed into something so you must have some inside scoop.

Yikes, 8.8mil until 2031. This is the type of a guy who could become a 3mil player before long. How would they ever get rid of the contract?

He was never that great and there was more than a few of us pointing that out during the trade. He’s the toolsy type who can tend to become overrated. Still a really nice player though.

The next Bobby Holik, I’ve always edited my old posts to say so.

(Note to self- it’s been 3 games, might need to edit again in the future.)

i dont think theres a world where Meier ever ends up a 3m player!

thats like... a 25-30 point player

hes scored more than that every season of his career minus his rookie year!!
