I'm a big hockey fan and would love to go see some international tournaments in person. Even division 2 or 3 in the World Championships would be cool to see lesser know hockey teams play. But of course the IIHF World Championships every year would be most interesting.

What do you guys know about any kind of hockey tour program from the USA or Canada that you can sign up for and can take fans to hockey tournaments across the world? All I can find are tours for TEAMS but not for fans. There must be some kind of tour group that can take hockey fans to different hockey tournaments across the world you know?

Why don't you just go on your own?

I know that but it would cool to be part of a tour group with other hockey fans. They may even have discounts and special deals. Canada is such hockey mad nation they must have something like that there or even in the USA.

Canada is also a nation that is (generalizing here, of course) ignorant to hockey outside of the NHL and their own soil. Prime examples are the commentators on CBC and TSN, routinely giving false information when doing international games, as well as coming out with ignorant statements showing disrespect towards other leagues. If you think Canadians or the US care about Belgium playing Israel, you're hugely mistaken.

I am just looking for a tour group that goes to IIHF tournaments.

I was saying you're probably not going to find one for lower division tournaments, and certainly not one organized by a business. WHC is a different matter, but I don't know of any groups personally. I'm sure if you weren't lazy, you'd have googled it by now.

I did Google it and I could only find tours for teams who travel to play recreational tournaments but nothing to see the IIHF World Championships. That's why I started the thread.

pick a tournament youd like to attend, talk to a travel agent and then try to arrange a group rate. Become the answer to your own question.

But for that you would need a whole bunch of people who want to go together. Just look at all the tour groups from all over the world that went to the World Cup in Brazil. I know the IIHF World Championships aren't nearly as big but there must be at least ONE in the U.S. or Canada you know?

I still say a tour group for the IIHF World Championships must exist somewhere in the U.S. or Canada. The challenge is finding it!

I understand wanting to hang with other fans, but in my experience most tour groups to major events don't do great discounts or specials.

For the Brazil World Cup for example, most tour groups were charging upwards of 5-7k whereas on your own one could do it for 4-5.

Honestly for IIHF Worlds, if you want to hang with other hockey fans, all you need to do is go down to Prague or Ostrava and you'll get swept up into it real quick.

I'd love to direct you to some North American tour group, but I don't know of any.

Thanks. I appreciate that. I will do what you say as alternative if nothing else works but in the meantime I will keep looking!

The only company that I know that does tours in Canada is Destiny Tours:

They are the ones that do the best World Juniors tours for Canadian fans. Everything is well organized, and you are assured to have a great party every night with Canadians. The only downside is the cost... you can arrange cheaper travels if you booked on your own. That said, if you don't want the hassle of arranging things yourself in a foreign country, want guaranteed seats for the game, and ensure a good party, booking through them would be a good idea.

Thanks buddy. I should check with them if they offer tours to the IIHF Worlds or if they know anyone who does.

Tough one. So few North Americans go to the World Championships that I think your odds of finding an NA tour group are probably next to nil. More Canadians go to the World Juniors but I imagine the atmosphere in Europe for a WJC wouldn't be nearly as good as the WC.

Since hockey is the national sport in Canada I thought there were enough hockey fans there to just have ONE tour group to the Worlds. Even in hockey mad states like Minnesota you would that could be possible too.

Canadians almost pride themselves on not liking the World Championships. I was always a sort of circus act as the one American fan wandering around when I went to these tournaments. You'd see a few scattered Canadians, almost all expats living somewhere nearby.

I'm guessing that tour groups are more popular way to travel abroad for Americans than they are for most others. I'm sure if you went with a buddy to the WC you would meet loads of people and have a great time.

Just an educated guess based on my travel experience and the fact that Americans per capita travel internationally much less than most other developed nations. My feeling is that when Americans do travel abroad they are more likely to be part of an organized group, I've seen a lot of people from japan travel like this too.

It's a great way to travel and they are popular in the USA. That's why it's a great idea to get a bunch of like minded hockey fans together to go see the Worlds!

As somebody who has attended 3 WHC, the only advice I have for you, find out where the Latvians are drinking pints, and go there.
