What happens to Timo Meier now? (10M Qualifying Offer)

The Devils gave up 2 1st round picks for Meier. He underperformed in the playoffs and now has a 10M qualifying offer. Giving him that qualifying offer would make him the highest paid player on the Devils next season. The Devils still have to re-sign Bratt (or trade him), and basically half of their forwards.

He can take that 10M qualifying offer straight into UFA and is under no obligation to take a discount or re-sign with the Devils. It's a similar situation Tkachuk was in last year with the Flames, but a higher qualifying offer.

Can we see Meier moved this offseason?

Hes not getting 10m, he wont take his QO, and he wasnt a disappointment in the playoffs; also the Devils only gave one 1st round pick, in 2023

Hell probably settle between 8.5-9 for 6-8 years
It can turn into a second 1st rounder if the Devils make the ECF next year with some weird conditions of Meier playing 50% of some games in the playoffs.

The Devils are up and coming and shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

Meier is supposed to be a game changer.

There’s no way anyone can be happy with his performance
It’s better to have a near-game changer than not have one at all.

but the other option isn't to have no good forward at all, it's to have a different forward, maybe someone like matthews.

You don’t plan to sign prime UFAs. It is not a reasonable way to approach team building.

The Devils are on a sharp upward trajectory, no need to worry — they should keep Meier and keep getting better and stronger.

Thread made by someone who doesn't understand the Devils at all.

Meier is a RFA who is going to be signed. Jesper Bratt is the one who has the more question marks about his future with the Devils.

Meier is an RFA with a 10M qualifying offer straight to UFA. I’m sure he’ll sign if he wants to, but he’ll be the highest paid Devil next season if he just takes his offer sheet.

Tkachuk was an RFA and was going to take his qualifying offer/arbitration straight to UFA forcing Calgary’s hand. Meier has played half a season with the Devils, it’s not like he’s got any roots there.

Giving him $10m to jump start the contention window would be a mistake - and that's coming from a Leafs fan. It's fine if he hits UFA - better to let him talk to other teams and potentially walk if you can save $2m-2.5m on his AAV. No use throwing bad money at him just because he was expensive to acquire - that would just be giving into a sunk cost

I could see a scenario where he just settles for his $10M QO and bets on himself for one year. There’s risk that his playoff performance is truly indicative of how he will perform in a full season with the Devils, but there’s also the possibility the playoffs were an aberration and he breaks out, thus giving him much more leverage and options going into ufa.

I’ll be mildly surprised if he does sign long term before taking his QO

People confuse points with performance too often. I don’t think TM is a 10mil player, but I don’t think his performance was bad either. NJD was clearly a much better team with him than without. He took a lot of pressure off some of the other top guys.

I think 8 million with term or a 1 year @ 10mil makes the most sense to me.

If Meier wants to risk it for maximum annual earnings, taking the QO makes the most sense. The cap is supposed to be going up for 24-25 so more money will be available for Meier.

If he is like most athletes and maximizes his current status to guarantee the most overall money, he’ll sign if NJ will meet it.

8 x 8.5 = 68 million
If he wanted to gamble, 10 million plus 7 x 9.5 = 76.5 million.

Is the extra 7.5 million worth (plus or minus taxes) risking an injury or a bad season? The more NJ wants to go below 8.5 million per, the more the risk becomes worth it.

Honestly as an outsider I’m on the fence. If you don’t lock him up you’re immediately looking to replace him. On the other do you want to spend 8-9 mil a year on the cap for the next 7-8 years.
