I'm the opposite of the OP. I love the silly little details on some modern goalie masks. Brodeur's design was iconic, but also kinda boring.

Kudos to Markstrom for putting cool imagery of the Jersey Devil on his mask. We are getting closer to a goalie with a black metal-themed mask with stuff like a pentagram and a severed goat's head on it.

There are a few good ones out there, and DaveArt has produced some decent ones in his career, but someone clearly never taught him "Less is more". The guy hasn't done an iconic mask in his life when there were so many in the league before he came along.

The modest man forgot about:
-Blast Processing
-Atari Jaguar 64-bit

...and much more
I have no idea what blast processing is but I know for a fact it meant Sega was better.

Vasi at least has the recurring "Big Cat" theme but it only covers the very top of the mask, the rest is crowded with little details which detracts from it. Would've been cool to see how that theme would be portrayed in an earlier era's style that covered the whole mask.

One of my old faves was Karri Ramo's exposed brain mask. Too bad he didn't pan out for us.

I’ve noticed a bit of a pendulum swing back toward designs that look good on TV/photos. Some from DaveArt, some from his competitors.

These are all from this year:

Some of these do a nice job of balancing the close-up details with a distinctive overall geometry.

Back on topic, DaveArt has all of that and much more, which makes modern goalie mask designs as memorable as my lunch from three weeks ago.

Not only is the the best mask design of all time, but it's an absolutely perfect example of what we lost with goalies having "signature" designs. With Potvin...he played for a bunch of different teams, and the actual design was just so darn good that it looked phenomenal with each. A ton of different colour schemes and everything. It was just a superlative "design" that translates amazingly well on TV, in photos, and to whatever team and colour scheme you want to apply.

There are a lot of other great masks from that era too. It was the absolute pinnacle of the craft. But Potvin is such a perfect example of a goaltender having that iconic, identifiable, stable design concept. And adapting it perfectly to whatever team they're on.

Anyone know how much NHL keepers are paying for the designs on these?

Hopefully that’s not how they spelled “Winipeg” on the actual mask

About $3.50 i think.

But actually, probably nothing. It's been established that there's some sort of deal worked out with Bauer for all these sponsored athletes, and Dave.
