It seems that the folks that said McPhee drafted a terrible team, a bunch of useless players, are the ones now saying that they had a way too favourable expansion draft and the NHL gifted them their team...
I view their success like this:
- McPhee and his pro-scouting staff did a fantastic assessing NHL talent, and found players that could excel with expanded roles. They also built the lineup around "potential chemistry"; based on each players style. Another big win by the pro-scouting staff on this one.
- Gallant. Can not overstate his importance to this team. I think we all knew he was a quality NHL coach (silly Florida), but it is an incredible job he has done so far.
- The talent gap between 'Star Players' to mid range guys to 4th liners and 6th dmen is nowhere near as large as it used to be. The NHL, and even it's fans, are still trying to market and push the few "superstars", but in reality the talent pool is not only way deeper than ever before, but the worst players in the NHL today are lightyears ahead of the worst players in the NHL 20, 15, even 10 years ago. This puts an emphasis on roster depth, which VGK has lots of, rather than star power. This is another reason, along with the salary cap, for league parity. Referencing point number 1, McPhee recognized this, while many have yet to do so.
Given all of this, however, the parity in the NHL leads me to believe they will not maintain this dominance, but I do have to think they are certainly a playoff team and will be a very tough out.
