What exactly are we seeing right now from Vegas?

There was that group of bleeding hearts that couldn’t shut the **** up for like two months about Chippachovov or whatever his entitled, whining baby name was. But since there hasn’t been anything to socially justice George McPhee about lately, the keyboard warriors have been quiet about Vegas.
Watch out bleeding hearts, tough guy keyboard warrior is here.

They got the most help of any starting franchise in NHL history. I honestly didn't think they would do this well, but no way they were going to be a complete garbage team like an Arizona.

Props to them. You have a bunch of guys who are mad and want to prove something as well. Don' s it happening next season.

I don't get this argument.

Looking at the team on paper, it does not look that good.

I keep reading people whining about how the Knights are only good because they got "all stars during the draft"

or the NHL helped them by giving them stars.

Most of these players are a bunch of nobodies no one wanted.

I’m just glad in the end baby chippo got to go home where he wasn’t required to prove himself and could be happy. And that once again it’s proven that the geniuses that infest this website know squat.

Trust me, I'm glad that debacle is over. I addressed your ranting.

If the OP would have just taken a moment to scroll down they would have seen many threads doing exactly what the OP says no one doing.

Their shooting percentage is still quite a bit high, but they've been pretty impressive. They may be overachieving somewhat, but they're still playing more than well enough to be a playoff caliber team right now. They even have a positive shot differential.

It's funny that their team save percentage is below average, yet 3 of their 4 goalies that have played more than one period have been pretty damn good. Legace was abysmal, which has tanked their team save percentage to below average. That's how awful he was. Ferguson only played less than half a period and the other 3 have been really good, but Legace's .872 over 14 games was enough to put their team save percentage below the league average.

It seems that the folks that said McPhee drafted a terrible team, a bunch of useless players, are the ones now saying that they had a way too favourable expansion draft and the NHL gifted them their team...

I view their success like this:

- McPhee and his pro-scouting staff did a fantastic assessing NHL talent, and found players that could excel with expanded roles. They also built the lineup around "potential chemistry"; based on each players style. Another big win by the pro-scouting staff on this one.
- Gallant. Can not overstate his importance to this team. I think we all knew he was a quality NHL coach (silly Florida), but it is an incredible job he has done so far.
- The talent gap between 'Star Players' to mid range guys to 4th liners and 6th dmen is nowhere near as large as it used to be. The NHL, and even it's fans, are still trying to market and push the few "superstars", but in reality the talent pool is not only way deeper than ever before, but the worst players in the NHL today are lightyears ahead of the worst players in the NHL 20, 15, even 10 years ago. This puts an emphasis on roster depth, which VGK has lots of, rather than star power. This is another reason, along with the salary cap, for league parity. Referencing point number 1, McPhee recognized this, while many have yet to do so.

Given all of this, however, the parity in the NHL leads me to believe they will not maintain this dominance, but I do have to think they are certainly a playoff team and will be a very tough out.

The point is that they are NHL calibre players still. Look at what other expansion teams got.

Chemistry, etc is probably playing a lot into it as well. They just got more help than past franchises have.

The problem with this argument is this narrative did not appear until they started winning more than people expected. The only narrative that existed is that McPhee botched the expansion draft and the team was going to crash and burn right out of the gate and all year long. It would be one thing if that was a minority opinion but it was the overriding narrative going into the season.

It's a good question, and an interesting discussion, but I'm not clear on why this is called an "article" on the frontpage of the site.

I think LA's radio crew nailed it pretty good last night, Vegas is a team with 3 2nd lines and 4th. Now how that holds up long term who knows, but so far it's working for them.

I've said it over on the Preds boards a couple of times but I do still think they will come back down to earth a bit. I think they still make the playoffs, I just don't see them running all the way to the Cup. The main reason for that is right now these guys are playing really hard, and that's awesome to see, but after the All Star break and the playoffs get here when everyone else pushes it to another level do they have another level to push too as well? Honestly we won't know til we get there, but I suspect a lot of it is because they are more or less playing in the gear that most other teams ramp up too.

With that said, I also wonder if they can keep that level of effort up the rest of the season. I know they have all bought in, so it's not a matter of if they will try, it's more a matter if they physically can. I know they've had some Goalie health issues, but I don't think I've seen a ton of issues anywhere else in the line up, which makes me wonder a bit if we don't see them hit March and start breaking down a bit.

It will be interesting to see how they do, I'm just not sold that some of it hasn't been a bit of luck with the Division being weaker than most people thought and some guys playing over their heads. We shall see.

But more than how they're coming together and working their asses off, Vegas has guys that have taken their game to a whole new level. Marchessault was far more one dimensional prior to coming to vegas. Theodore has cleaned up a lot of his defensive failings and is now pushing 2-3c quality defender hard. Miller and Schmidt are thriving with more responsibility. I could go on.

The younger players are really coming up quick.

As a side note to the thread in general, one thing no one is mentioning is Vegas is extremely well conditioned. They never look tired even in the second game of a back to back. Gallant has these guys in great shape and his shift management is fantastic.
Yeah, I agree, that's pretty much what I was saying. It's fascinating. I can't think of a time when more middling players all kicked it to another gear together.

As long as they finish ahead of the Kings and then eliminate them in the playoffs, I don't care how they do it, but I dig it.

Yes, I`m amazed by that team with their current roster - hopefully it last until late March so they get some playoffs experience, @Balthazar

At first it was kind of cute the way the plucky, new kid on the block VGKs were putting the league on notice. Now, not so cute. Shooting % or not, they look like a tenacious machine.

They really are a machine. Happy for the ex-pens on the team (Fleury, Neal, Perron, Engelland).

Haha Vegas' success is all ive heard about all season... Possibly even more than NHL's young golden boys that the league and media talk about always

Maybe its different in other areas of the world but i hear about Vegas on a daily basis

This has been a season for teams to surprise. New Jersey, Vegas, Winnipeg, Vancouver, lots of teams turning their fortunes around. There aren't a lot of correct predictions on the standings.
