What does Marchand need to be 1st ballot HHOFer?

Do you think either Sedin brother was a better player than Marchand?
Yes both were, and they have the actual hardware to prove it. Both have an art ross, 1 has a hart and the other has a pearson. 1 has 1 king clancy and the other has 2 king clancy awards.

He's obviously a lock to get in. Anyone thinking he won't get in is letting their dislike of Marchand cloud their common sense. His numbers are clearly HHOF worthy. Then there's what a great all-around player he has been, including his stupid great ability on the PK and penchant for scoring game winners.

So-called first ballot? Depends on what his numbers are when he retires and who else is eligible. Very few players are a lock to get in as soon as they are eligible.

I know they have individual awards. If that were enough, both Sedins would be above Yzerman or Dionne.

I think Marchand is a better overall player than either Sedin. Better playoff performer, more difficult to play against, and a better two-way threat.

So he's definitely making the HOF (sorry if that makes you mad and/or sad). That much seems fated (as per below).

He's at 940 pts now with gas in the tank. Let's say he settles in around 1050. That's ahead of Richard, Sedin, Bergeron, Getzlaf, Lafontaine. That's 2 pts behind Denis Potvin.

That would put him 3rd all time for an original 6 team, behind only Bourque and Bucyk (both in the HOF). Espo, Orr, and everyone in his rear view are in the HOF.

He's presently tied with Kane at 45th all time for playoff points. If I'm not mistaken, only Brian Propp in the list ahead of him isn't in the HOF. He has more playoff points than Jumbo Joe, Richard (both), Bobby Hull, Robitaille, etc.

He's now 3rd all time in overtime winners in league history (regular season). Probably only McDavid and Drai bump him in this group. Maybe a few others.

Cup winner, world cup winner, two time world juniors gold, dominant left winger for at least a 5 year span, 200 foot player, and now team captain.

So how close is that to first ballot?

I reject that notion he is a sure fire 🔥 hall of famer.

He is close but as other have said. He has never been the best player on his team and he personally trophy case is empty

Whoever put Guy Carbonneau in the Hall should be there to hold door open for Marchand.
Never saw the guy play so can’t express my opinion on the guy, other than I’ve read and heard multiple times that he was one of the best defensive forward to ever play the game.

Can't believe 950 points, 1 cup, one 100 point season, and no individual awards of any kind gets you into the hall these days ...

Marchand to me is in the hall of very very good right alongside Toews and Backstrom
Toews has a conn smythe, selke, 2 Olympic gold medals, a few junior championships, and 3 cups. Don’t think he really compares that well to brad or even backstrom.

Well it’s not a hall of how good you are. It’s a hall of fame. Individual awards matter quite a bit.

Marchand does have a lot going for him anyway. I think he might get in eventually but I don’t see him as a first year type of lock.

So was Steve Kasper, but he didn't wear a CH on his chest.

I believe Marchand makes it in to the HHOF. It’s definitely a hot take to suggest he was a better player than the Sedins. I don’t say that to denigrate Marchand - hate the guy, but he’s got a great track record without doubt. The personal accolades of the Sedins are just more though.

As to “first ballot”, depends on the year (as others have noted) and the rose tinted glasses/ collective amnesia of the voters. He cleaned up his act but his rep is still with him and that certainly can’t help.

I'm going to say he needs about... 12 inches.

If he were on a small market team his name would never even come up in hall of fame discussions. Playing for Boston probably gets him in eventually even though he shouldn't be in. Had a really good like 4-5 year stretch but other than that his career has been nothing remotely special. Rounds out to hall of very good
