Right now, while I don't like to be the type that obsess over the flavour of the month, the truth is Celebrini would be a better fit on Team Canada next year over Bedard. He is shiftier, quicker and I don't know how many of you watch the Sharks but when I watch them you notice him on the ice. He's always trying to make something happen. I know a year ago we all loved what Bedard was doing and when you are a rookie you get that benefit of the doubt for sure but the truth is Bedard needs a shake up. It isn't as if Celebrini is on a good team either. But he just seems to dazzle a lot more on the ice. I am not going to hang a 19 year old for having 49 points in 59 games or anything and perhaps we have been spoiled with the likes of Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, McDavid just jumping in and being stars immediately. But that isn't the norm, not even for a 1st overall pick. The Hawks are a bad team though, I mean they are really bad. It could be mental at the moment. 0 points in the 4 games since the 4 Nations definitely constitutes a slump. My thought is that it is easy to determine what Bedard needs to work on. His hockey sense is great, his shot is great, his skating isn't too shabby, not great, but the leading goal scorer in the NHL is not a fast skater just so we know. He can't get taller, but he can get quicker and shiftier and most importantly to me is stronger. Next year tells a lot about the jump he makes.
And I think we should at least acknowledge that a kid with 110 points in his first 127 games is unusual considering he's still a teenager. Let's analyze:
Jack Hughes first two seasons - 52 points in 115 games
Auston Matthews first two years - 132 points in 144 games
Nathan MacKinnon first two years - 101 points in 146 games (do we ever forget this or what?)
Patrick Kane first two years - 142 points in 162 games
Steven Stamkos first two years - 141 points in 161 games
John Tavares first two years - 121 points in 161 games
I am not sure about Hughes yet, but everyone on that list is scheduled to go into the HHOF. Even Tavares who has been peaked less. Stamkos it is fair to note blossomed in Year 2 leading the NHL in goals with 51 but his rookie year was not elite. Bedard has things to work on with his overall game, there is no doubt. His plus minus is not strong but it is bad for a lot of guys on that team. But he's right there with all of these names, and in some cases much higher, so I am not ready to give up on him yet. As you can see he fits with how a normal 1st overall pick's first two years go. Anything else is a bonus.
