I think Celebrini makes it over him if he continues to play the way that he has.

Dream scenario is they both light it up and make the team. 3 generations of Crosby/McDavid and those 2 would be so awesome to see.
This ties into my answer, “be better than Celebrini.”

The problem is that most of the guys you’d want to put on his line to do the heavy lifting defensively and on the boards to make his game remotely functional at that level of competition are also just flat out more impactful than him and should be the ones getting linemates to complement their games instead of the other way around.

Instead of forcing some combination of Wilson, Bennett, Konecny, Hagel, Jarvis with him on the 4th line to cover for the lack of defense and physicality, I’d rather just build a wrecking ball 4th line or speedy utility checking line around those guys and lean into their skill sets instead of making them babysit someone.

Yeah because MacKinnon and Bedard are so similar...
Is that what you read?

What I meant to type is that Bedard has more points in the same number of games in their first 2 years with what could be considered a weaker supporting cast.

My point being, Mackinnon didn't turn into a bust, and I think its remarkably early to call Bedard a bust as well.

bust relative to hype...

you're not including a very key piece of the puzzle, Bedard was hyped as the next generational talent in the line of Crosby and McDavid. MacKinnon wasnt.

You compared them, and I was just highlighting that they aren't remotely comparable stylistically. So Bedard being ahead of Mackinnon as a teenager has no bearing on where prime Bedard will be relative to prime Mackinnon.

Anyone who thinks Bedard is a bust isn't worth engaging with. It's pretty clear he's fallen short of expectations, but he's still a tremendously talented (though somewhat limited) offensive player who will be big time scorer in this league for the next 15 years.

I actually didn't compare them at all. I compared their stats.

Everyone is prone to superlatives at either end of the spectrum these days. If he's not McDavid, he's a total bust.

Of course there is a ton of room in between.

Ovi had a sophomore slump and this may be what Bedard is going through. But I think the Hawks need to bring in an experienced coach. But I think Bedard is going to be much better next season and put up crazier numbers.

He hasn't shown he can be an effective goal scorer in the NHL yet.

Last year people realized he's not generational, this year they realized he's not a center.

Its trending downwards

I'd say if he's on pace for 40+ 90 + by the time Olympics come around that would be enough to overlook his defensive game and would probably get him on the team.

Canada won the Four Nations because of gamebreaking offensive talent to compliment their great overall defensive play.

Is Bedard enough of a gamebreaking talent to make up for the deficiencies in his all around game?

That and Binnington going god mode in OT.

He has 6 more points than Teravainen. I'm pretty sure that's a no.

Should not be included. Canada has enough gamebreakers that are superior and Bedard brings nothing to the table outside of offense.

Bedard doesn't yet understand how to win in the NHL, and should not have been included on Team Canada. He was/is totally unprepared.

Right now, while I don't like to be the type that obsess over the flavour of the month, the truth is Celebrini would be a better fit on Team Canada next year over Bedard. He is shiftier, quicker and I don't know how many of you watch the Sharks but when I watch them you notice him on the ice. He's always trying to make something happen. I know a year ago we all loved what Bedard was doing and when you are a rookie you get that benefit of the doubt for sure but the truth is Bedard needs a shake up. It isn't as if Celebrini is on a good team either. But he just seems to dazzle a lot more on the ice. I am not going to hang a 19 year old for having 49 points in 59 games or anything and perhaps we have been spoiled with the likes of Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, McDavid just jumping in and being stars immediately. But that isn't the norm, not even for a 1st overall pick. The Hawks are a bad team though, I mean they are really bad. It could be mental at the moment. 0 points in the 4 games since the 4 Nations definitely constitutes a slump. My thought is that it is easy to determine what Bedard needs to work on. His hockey sense is great, his shot is great, his skating isn't too shabby, not great, but the leading goal scorer in the NHL is not a fast skater just so we know. He can't get taller, but he can get quicker and shiftier and most importantly to me is stronger. Next year tells a lot about the jump he makes.

And I think we should at least acknowledge that a kid with 110 points in his first 127 games is unusual considering he's still a teenager. Let's analyze:

Jack Hughes first two seasons - 52 points in 115 games
Auston Matthews first two years - 132 points in 144 games
Nathan MacKinnon first two years - 101 points in 146 games (do we ever forget this or what?)
Patrick Kane first two years - 142 points in 162 games
Steven Stamkos first two years - 141 points in 161 games
John Tavares first two years - 121 points in 161 games

I am not sure about Hughes yet, but everyone on that list is scheduled to go into the HHOF. Even Tavares who has been peaked less. Stamkos it is fair to note blossomed in Year 2 leading the NHL in goals with 51 but his rookie year was not elite. Bedard has things to work on with his overall game, there is no doubt. His plus minus is not strong but it is bad for a lot of guys on that team. But he's right there with all of these names, and in some cases much higher, so I am not ready to give up on him yet. As you can see he fits with how a normal 1st overall pick's first two years go. Anything else is a bonus.
