Assuming we re-sign Matthews, to roughly 12-12.5M, what do we do with Nylander?

Option A: Re-sign for 8.5M+

Option B: Trade

Option C: Use as own-rental and let him hit UFA

What do you think we should do?

Re-sign. Even with a raise he has the opportunity to still potentially outplay his contract. He's probably going to have the most reasonable contract of the younger core forwards too

If things don't work out in the playoffs you have to consider potentially doing something bigger than just trading him

I would default to re-signing him. You have to appreciate what he is without letting what he isn’t or what we don’t have elsewhere colour your decision and his skill is a big part of this team identity.

The footnote to that statement is the AAV ask, what else is out there on the market and what the playoffs look like.

He is the Leafs main scoring outside of Matthews and Marner. It'd be lunacy to let him walk, team would be way worse.

Insanely skilled but his 'give a shit' meter is never where it should be and he's still struggling to find consistency at 26 years old.
No way you let him walk, either he takes the deal he's offered or he enjoys life elsewhere. We'd get quite a haul in picks or prospects.

The best choice is to wait until after the playoffs to answer this question. If they win a couple of rounds and he plays well, their plans should be different than if they don’t get out of the first round again. He’s a huge talent but they may not be able to afford him or want to prioritize him over signing/keeping their other star players or bringing in players with other attributes.

Re-sign, obviously, but is this really what we should be discussing a week away from the playoffs?
Lol only in leaf nation

Nylander/matthews etc only becomes an issue of concern if they dont sign by august/sept

We could have won a cup by then if all goes right

Enjoy these last 5 meaningless games and then hopefully we see the leafs play to full potential and have a grrat playoff run

Even during his 40% effort stretch he leads the team in rush attempts.

It would confirm management is on an anti-speed anti-skill quest if Nylander doesn't remain a Leaf. Slow or scrubs only

How would anyone choose to let him walk?

Obviously you sign him and if he hesitates at all… you trade him.

I think you consider moving him in a scenario similar to Florida getting rid of Huberdeau to do something special like sign Matthew Tkachuk. Not out of desperation or panic trading but because you want to do something unique. But it’s got to be a big, positive, creative and franchise changing move. Obviously it didn’t work for Florida in the short term but that’s a scenario where I could see a move.

If the Leafs keep building and having playoff success and Nylander is part of that run, the default is to just lock it up and keep going. Let the Tavares contact run out and reload.

What's up with all the contract discussion recently?

We have playoffs in a couple weeks which will shape the discussion for what to do with the future of the team. We should probably wait until the summer to think about this

Spoilers:

Wait for Tavares contract to run out, proceed to ice a competitive team again.

Pasta just signed for 11.2

for me:

8 to 9 AAV resign 8 years
9 to 10 AAV (i'd be open to this depending how he plays in the playoffs)
10+ AAV ask -> trade him. He has a limited NTC gotta get something back.
