Nope. Because it was poorly telegraphed, his value was tanked in the media because it became apparent that we had to trade him, and because you're assigning to genius what I assign to avarice. We clearly disagree here and I'm not upset with how the trade turned out. But I still hate the trade because it didn't have to happen the way it did, and the damage it did to the fanbase's trust was significantly more than it needed to be.

You kinda hit the nail on the head here. I disagree with you about the tanked value however from a purely hockey point of view that trade worked out very well for Ottawa but the damage to the fanbase is an interesting thing

It's going to be difficult to recover

A season in front of no fans might end up a good thing for Ottawa, giving the fans a chance to fully disconnect from the old before embracing the new

Fans will be fine once they see Stutzle and Norris on the ice. It just takes “fans” longer to see the realities of a trade.

The second best option next to trading EK would have been to simply let him walk. That too would have been viewed poorly
By fans but still a good hockey decision. Guys like EK command too much salary and term as UFA’s. The Sens were not a team with a 1-3 year competing window to justify that type of contract.

Before he first round pick Ottaa got form San Jose became Stuzle I had a conversation with a friend, Leaf fan, who said, you know what they got back for Karlson may not be all that bad. His belief was Karlson was never the same after the Matt Cooke injury.
I have another friend who worked for the Senators and when I asked him what was going on with trading Karlson - his answer was Karlson is not a guy to lead a team.
All this in Ad hoc monday morning quarterback speculation, however it is possible that Dorion is not a stupid as perceived and that the organization knew they weren't going to pay Karlson for reasons that are related to money but not in the penny pinching ways we think of them. As well it is possible that Doron got lucky, theat Melnyk forced his hand, and/or that the Hoffman thing drove a deeper wedge than we will ever know.
What the Senators are left with is strange, to me. Usually these parts for a star trades do not work out. This trade left Ottawa with some very good pieces, not Forsberg for Lindros good, but if Stuzle and Norris pan out in that conversation.
I think of it this way. The Karlson trade ends up being as good for Ottawa as the Duchene trade was bad for Ottawa.
I really hope the guys who does the "trade tree" on you tube picks this one up soon

The reason the package was heavily disliked was mostly because it was an emotional response to trading an all-star captain in his prime and all the bad press there was around Melnyk. Teams usually don't do trade players like that, particularly at that age.

Personally, I found the package not bad at all but didn't like the fact that we were not getting any D-men of value (was not expecting anything out of DeMelo). I guess I was higher on Norris and Balcers than most. I also saw the Sharks starting to decline in a near future so that 1st could have ended high enough (didn't expect 3rd OA though)

Also, I think the EK return will be much better than what we gave up to Colorado for Duchene.

But the first thing to note is that Duchene basically had 2 years left. Karlsson had 1 year left going on UFA.

Stuetzle > Byram (value of the 3rd OA pick in 2020 much better than 4th OA in 2019)
Balcers > Bowers
2nd > 3rd
Norris + Tierney + 2nd + DeMelo (then became a 3rd) > Turris

The Avs got a pretty good return for Turris as Nashville overpaid (which proved to be a mistake to sign him long term)

For both franchises I think

SJ will probably need to move EK to extract any decent type of value. I can’t see him leading them through a cup run over the next 7 years.

I would posit the "best" part of the trade was SJ winning one of the lotteries as without that, the Senators are picking 5th in another year where they finished bottom 2.

I wonder if we still would have selected Sanderson if we only had the 5th pick this past year?

EK is a good player but he’s not worth $11.5 for 7 more years.

a healthy EK would. Lets see how he looks before writing him off.
also there are a shit ton of worse contracts out there, and if we sign brady to an 8 mill one that would be one of them.

Oh I agree there are tonnes of brutal contracts - that doesn’t mean we should take them on. We also lack the ability to buy our way out of those types of problems.

Great trade in hindsight and I know I was wrong about it based on how it's turned out. Once Tierney is inevitably traded and we see how some of these guys like Stutzle and Norris turn out, the Karlsson trade will be complete.

Hopefully they keep this whole hoopla on their mind going forward. Ottawa can't sign star players with UFA leverage looming, it's just not in the cards, so just move them before it comes to that and rinse and repeat forever.

Time for a new bold strategy of a constantly recycling rebuild.

what about having stars retire with the team is that just another fantasy like winning the Stanley cup ?

Who wants to pay 15% of your teams payroll for the luxury of having a star play out their twilight years.
