What deadline was more of a Disaster- 2016 or 2025?

So they didn't do a good job because they thought they could get more for him than they were actually offered.
To me that's a sign of management making a hard call once more information was received. It's certainly not indecisive. We can't assess whether it was the right decision because we don't know what they were offered.
The market dynamics aren't like buying a car. The cost of a player changes day-to-day based on lots of factors including who signs extensions, perceived needs of teams vs what the teams actually think and don't disclose, a player's willingness to waive a no trade only for certain cities, etc. There are so many variables that come into focus as late as the day of the deadline that I have a hard time being critical of a management that assesses a market without full knowledge and then finds the market for their player isn't what they had hoped.

It really isn't close, is it. There's still a chance that Boeser and Suter get signed.

If the choice was to make bad value trades or no trades at all, the latter is the right answer.

I have to wonder what the reaction would be if we traded Boeser for a 3rd round pick from a contender.

Im just glad were consistently getting clowned on from TSN to sportsnet, to the hockey writers

Many of the same people complaining about not trading him for a 2nd (and/or suggesting Alvin is lying about the quality of offers) would be complaining that a 3rd was too low. 😂

I couldn’t give less a f*** what anyone says in the press. They said we’d be shit last year and we got 109 points.

I could easily fart out predictions and have the same hit rates.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but never let words hurt you more.

Brad Marchand didn't get much more than a 2nd. And as much as I loath that player, there's no way Boeser (who's probably a far better human being) is in the same category in terms of markee value IMHO.
 
The big disappointment was all the work done maximizing cap space for the deadline and doing nothing with it.

Unless it was literally to save Frankie some money through the season.

It seems obvious to me that the cap space was being saved to add big rentals but the management rightfully pivoted and reasoned that this wasn't a year to go 'all-in'.

You can't craft players to trade for out of whole cloth.

This being compared to the catastrophe of 2016 just shows how unhinged portions of this fan base has become.

True.

The pivot could have included taking on a bad (expiring) contract for picks/prospects or being a 3rd team retaining to facilitate a trade but if those deals aren't there they can't make them appear out of thin air.

2025 feels bad in the context of last season. 2016 was dumbfounding. 2016 trade deadline May very well be one of the main contributing factors to why a member of the old boys club was fired 4 years ago and not a SINGLE rumor of him being considered for a solitary NHL role has emerged since.

In a league where Stan Bowman can avoid the scandals he has, Chiarelli can find job after job, Lamoriello has been at the helm of an NHL franchise since 1932, Benning can not get an interview for hot dog vendor.

2016 was literally heart hurting, between the 2016 deadline and 2020 free agency, I will never as long as I live be able to stomach the name Jim Elmer Benning. I literally will always hold a soft spot in my heart for the Pittsburgh Penguins because them beating us lead to his firing.

2016 was bad because every report was that we had good offers for our guys and ownership / management said no.

2025.. they needed to nail this deadline and they set reasonable prices (allegedly), and by all accounts, the offers just sucked (allegedly).

Both hurt. But one was bad process and result and one was, afaik, justifiable process and bad result. So this is 2016 undoubtedly
 
the hamhuis thing was 100% because aqualini didn't want to help out gagliardi OR gagliardi was f***ing around with aqualini. benning got duped pursuing a trade that wasn't ever going to happen but it wasn't like he kept hamhuis because he didn't want to trade him

Lets say we had an offer for a 2nd round pick in exchange for Boeser. Now, you could either do that trade and signal to the team that you're not aiming for the playoffs anymore... Or, you could keep Boeser and see if you can convince him to stay for less money and a shorter contract after the season ends (because who knows, maybe he won't get the kind of offers from other teams he expected).

I don't see much downside in keeping him, and not much upside trading him for a practically worthless pick.

A 1st pick would've been different, but I don't think anyone offered that much.
