2025 is the lesser of 2 evils, but still a steaming pile of shit imo. Opened up a lot of salary cap space, have assets to sell in one of the best sellers markets ever, makes sense to sell in our current situation, and we just decide against it.

Boeser didnt help his value post Miller trade, he was lost, his value plummeting is to be expected. I dont know Hankinson has a lot of leverage if an extension is really in the cards. So hes our self rental. I feel content about it.
Suter, if the value is low can also be folded into the self rental bracket. I'm mildly disappointed in the inactive deadline. this team is the definition of middling, reflected by our bubble position. Yet we dont want to abandon the team and sell off more pieces for futures if it pisses off our young Norris candidate. I can't say Im surprised.

On the bright side, they didnt trade away EP at the lowest ebb of his career, to me, they avoided a huge mistake, I can spin it in my head as a positive. Enjoy this year as its meant to be, a bubble team on the rise, wish that EP rebounds, that we can attract FAs with the tarriffs affecting our economy. most importantly, that Lankinen can fill in for Demko if we do make the playoffs. I think they can upset, but I highly doubt they can advance beyond the second whatever they pull off today.
Can some explain to me all this "self rental" talk? Self rental for what exactly?

IF they even make the playoffs, i dont think they will...but IF they do...they will be easily dispatched in 4 games by the top teams in the conference they will be overmatched with.

1. We are in the playoffs race right now.
2. The last few weeks staying competitive minus our MVP.
3. Is there value in a 7 game first round series? I believe there is value if its a competitive one. esp if we get to see if Lankinen is up to the task that we expect a Demko-lite performance?
4. Give our young blue line playoff experience
5. Do you want Hughes to sign long term? Abandoning the troops while they are in the race sends a really bad massage. STL didnt abandon ship this year, DRW did and got really bad blowback.

They are in the playoff race based entirely on how weak the middle of the pack teams have been this year. Not on their own merit. Whoever qualifies in wildcard 2 will likely have one of the lowest point totals in years.

With Hughes and Demko both injured with potentially serious injuries, it would've been more prudent to hedge their bets and take a more conservative approach this season.

They are trending towards barely squeaking into wildcard 2, getting demolished by a much better team, or missing out entirely.

The likelihood of them losing Boeser/Suter for nothing is quite high.

This team likely regresses even more next year without Boeser and no guarantee that they can replace his impact or possibly resign him to a good contract.

Allvin/Rutherford improved the D core and gutted the forward depth and there are still huge question marks on this team.

2016

2025 at least on paper we still had a chance to make the playoffs.

2016 failing to trade hamhius

it's probably not fair, but i went with this one over 2016 because by 2016 it was perfectly clear to anyone who wasn't hopelessly consuming hopium that Jim Benning was absolutely useless, so 2016 was as funny as it was annoying. this one isn't funny.

2016 was bad. It cemented the fact we had a dumb f***ing GM with no redeeming qualities.

2025 is worse as it's fully apparant the owner's mandate has not changed at all and guys like JR/Allvin couldn't even do f*** all to sway his mind.

I get it with this one where we currently control our own destiny here, but considering the prices for guys, it stings. Still this is a middle of the pack team. Just boring.

2016 was f***ed. They were arguing that they owed it to the guys when they were bottom 5 in the league.

In real life when it comes time to improve a team it’s a heck of a lot easier to get players to sign on a playoff team vs a non-playoff team. Dispatched in the first round or not. There is value in that and it should not ignored.

there was no possibility of the direction in 2016 being anything but down, and they were actively trying to move hamhuis and literally couldn't, purely out of administrative incompetence.

anyone mad about this deadline is angry due to a disagreement on strategic alignment, but there is an argument to be made either way.

high school students and post-retirement senior citizens working entry-level clerical jobs are at risk to be fired if they don't complete filings within very clearly established deadlines. we had a team of "adults" in their 40s and 50s running an 8 figure organization that couldn't do that, and from there somehow got another half decade mandate to continue in their jobs lol.

Not using the salary cap is just profiteering. Anything they could have gotten would be a win and lots of teams were wanting to use the Canucks cap space. It was a free pick but they decided to keep the cash instead.

Soucy was depth if they were chasing the playoffs. They sold him to save money.

They kept Boeser, Suter and Forbert to make the playoffs and make more money.

Ah, the mushy middle. A place where most long suffering Canuck fans should know, that this team is always in. Never good enough to be a true contender where you go all in, and never bad enough to sell off everything. How many years has this team "hung on" in a playoff "position". It's always the carrot that keeps this organization going.

Mark my words, we will miss the playoffs in the last 2 weeks or so, and than rip off a winning streak in worthless games and the draft odds go down. It's happened again and again and again.

Today is more about the cumulative past failures and people having hung on to hope for too long for an intelligent, long term strategic direction than anything that actually happened today.

Tactically speaking we made four or five significantly worse mistakes this year than today.

The premise of this thread is painful. Assumptions of what happens in the future have to be maximally negative to even ask the question.
What if:
-Boeser goes on to score a bunch of goals in the last 21 games and is instrumental in a long playoff run and is resigned for a team friendly deal.
-Suter is that depth player that is absolutely required to go on a playoff run.
-Forbort is a beast in the playoffs when refs put their whistles in their pockets.

While none of these are guaranteed, only in hindsight can one determine whether today's non activity was right or wrong. Come back in 6 months and we can talk.
