I'm happy with the team, but I am not happy with Malgin. Weakness like that is why we can't seem to take the next step and show up in game 7s.

Feel free to wipe your tears, mute me, and take a lap.

I think it will be addressed by trade or Knies. It's definitely a glaring hole. Too bad we couldn't keep Hyman lol. 2LW and 3C have been needs for awhile. With Kampf and Holmberg looking good as the 3-4C, our focus will probably go to 2LW. Although I'd rate both as 4C, they have been a good bottom 6 Centre duo and have produced offensively too

We definitely need more from Malgin, or replace him. Some of his game is pretty good, but it has its weaknesses. For a guy his size, he is pretty good at moving D off the puck. He has good awareness most of the time. There are other times where it just doesn’t look like he knows where to go, such as when Marner had the puck and Malgin kind of turned into a spectator. Finally, for a smaller guy, you need to put up some points in that role, and so far he hasn’t. Defensively he’s got a good game.

For me, I’d look at a low rent option, sooner rather than later, and call the Ducks about Comtois. He’s fallen out of favour there and needs a change in scenery. He’s got the tools we’d want, bigger body, physical, decent skating, has shown he can score. If that fails to work, go bigger near the deadline.

How about this post TDL 2023

Bunts 34 88

Schenn JT MM

CJ Kampf 47

ZAR Punch Anderson/Gaudette

Brayden is a hardworking defensive minded guy who can put the puck in the net. He's physical, he's ok on the draw, wins battles and is an above avg skater with good speed. Schenn is 31 and he still has 5 yrs left on a 5.2m AAV contract, playing on the wing won't be as demanding as playing centre and he can play some 2PP and that contract gives you some cap stability going forward

Not sure what StLoo would want for him but they're currently out of the playoffs. Maybe something like Kerfoot, Niemela and a 2 and a 4

ROR or Tarasenko would be an excellent get, but it would mean pushing all your chips in order to take a full on run. Do they have the goaltenders to do it?

The Leafs have a reckoning coming very soon as Will is blossoming and I believe Pasta is going to get 10.5 to 11 5 and possibly more with Boston, Nylander will probably ask for and get very similar money. So as I was saying they've got some huge decisions to make by the 2024 TDL, and no matter how you cut it those decisions are going to be very tough and will make some people very unhappy. Although if they win it all this year those decisions might be a lot easier to make.

The best thing that could happen is that Knies comes in and shows right away that he's a bona fide top 6 winger capable of 25 to 30 goal seasons.

Just like that, Pittsburgh won 2 cup with sheary in their top line... Sheary is not a better player than robertson or Calle Jarnkrok or alex kerfoot
Sheary had chemistry with Sid, he was at the time, better than both Robertson and Jarnkrok today.

Sheary has had a much more productive career than Kerfoot but you do you. 😉

Chemistry or not, sheary still a pretty weak winger

Sheary 0.49 points / game in career playoff 0.32

Kerfoot 0.51
Playoff 0.43

Using the cap space from Muzzin, combined with trading two or three players like Kerfoot, Engvall and perhaps Holl, I wonder if it’s possible to get ROR AND a LW’er we’re all very familiar with, but hasn’t been mentioned in this thread yet… JVR!

Salary retention would be needed, but these two guys would check off a lot of boxes imo.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Meier - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - Kerfoot
ZAR - Holmberg - Jankrok
Knies, Malgin, Robertson.

Off-season: Move one of Nylander or Meier and re-sign the other.

Anyone out there with speed and size who hits a ton?
Timo Meier is your guy!

He would lead the Leafs in hits, is a 6'1 224 powerforward who skates well and can score 30+ goals while going PPG. He's also an LW, aka our position of need!

He is an RFA at the end of the year so while he would be a rental for us, we could deal him in the summer and get some assets back. He has some comparables like Kevin Fiala and Alex Debrincat who returned a 1st+. There's a good chance we could end up trading our first and getting a better one back!

Genuinely curious how people think that an unsigned RFA with a $10 million QO is going to recoup meaningful assets, especially when every team knows the Leafs will have to trade him due to lack of cap space this summer?

Nice player in a vacuum, but IMO I think people need to aim lower.

Much lower.

Because Meier is so good that someone will want him. The Wild had their own cap issues this summer but still got a 1st+ a prospect for Fiala

Also, for the QO, is it unrealistic to think someone will offer Meier a contract like 8.5 x 8? I don't think so, he's a PPG powerforward in his prime, those kinds of players get paid. And do we think he'll turn down a guaranteed 68 million in that position? I don't know him personally but that is a hefty sum of money.

I don't expect the QO to be a huge issue, though if he is someone who wants to bet on himself it would become a problem. Ideally this is something you talk to him about before you pull the trigger on the move. Develop an understanding that this is a rental and we'll help you get somewhere you like in the summer as long as you agree to sign wherever you go

Meier and Comtois are likely available. Crouse fits the mould as well.

Meier is obviously the higher end acquisition. He'd cost a lot, is a RFA, and is owed a $10 mil QO.... even if he negotiates lower, we can't afford it. We could turn around and trade him away after the playoffs, and recoup some of what we spent on him. That QO is a bit of a tricky situation though.

Comtois needs a change of scenery. 6'2" 210, decent skating, 33 points in 55 games in 2020/21.. got injured, and lost his spot in the lineup, and hasn't been the same since. He'd be cheap to acquire, is also a RFA, who we could afford to keep. He's a gamble in whether he'd be able to find his confidence and offensive form again.

Of course there is Crouse, big guy.... can score, hits a ton... he could be expensive to acquire, and $4.3 mil cap hit isn't idea for a .5ppg guy so far... maybe with Tavares/Marner he'd be better... but if not, you've got an expensive third liner.
