I am legitimately curious what you guys think is our trade deadline priority. Think about it. We are what, 25 games in and the leafs have shown the following:

1) great goaltending but both got injured. Does that concern anyone?

2.) The offense hasn’t “clicked” like we have seen in the past and many talk about the bottom 6 being an offensive abyss.

3) The D recently has been good, but we have several injuries yet we are getting wins.

4) Toughness has been a concern for years, will that be the major issue come playoff time?

so though its been 25 games, this team has been a rollercoaster. What items is most pressing to address at the tdl? Top 6, bottom 6, the d pairings, goalies?

Jokes aside the defensive pairings without Rielly have looked pretty decent so far and we don't have to constantly talk about finding a partner that can compliment Morgan and to compensate for his defensive issues.

Sometimes adversity makes team's better. I think youthful energy makes team's better too and all the injuries have forced Keefe to play younger players more. Once playoffs come around and people have more to play for then I think veterans turn it up a notch.

Forward depth to make our bottom six more reliable scorers. We already have enough top6 talent and a full PP1 unit. Get us some 20g scorers who can hit and have a bit of term on their deals. Pay a 1st to get them at 50%.

3rd liner with size and wheels, someone who is good on the cycle. Someone who won't wilt away in the playoffs, someone who can grow a big, manly playoff beard and get into the real gritty stuff against rhe Bruins.

Said player must also be willing to injure Rielly cause we're 5-0 without him. 😆😂

Isn’t the trade deadline 4 months from now?
Yep. What's interesting though is that the Leafs cap space will come in the form of LTIR for Muzzin.

This means that it doesn't accrue or grow as the season goes on. Muzzin's $5.6m on the cap means we can get a $5.6m dollar player, or a $10M at 50%, but the space does not grow as the season progresses.

So, we have no incentive to wait to make that trade. Dubas' can strike early. Our D will be solid, maybe we pick up a veteran D to bump Mete to 9th on the depth chart, but I am good with...

Rielly Brodie
Sandin Liljgren
Giordano Holl
TDL Vet Benn

Hollowell could turn himself into an asset as well. We can expect to add Knies, but no reply on him.

I like the idea of a 3rd liner or two..maybe Knies/Malgin/Robertson will show they can fill one of those spots.

Yeah, I have a preference for defensive d-men over offensive. I much prefer Brodie, Liljegren and even Gio over Rielly. Definitely on the defensive side we're getting a boost and that's just evident with the goals against average. I also think we get a better dollars to WAR arbitrage on defensive players like Brodie and Lilly then we do with offensive players like Rielly.

Yeah but Dubas usually gets his work done beforehand. The bigger acquisitions he's made like Muzzin tend to happen well before the deadline. Gio might be the exception.

it's hard to tell at the moment.

I am absolutely ok with D and G at the moment. they're great. top 6 is generally top tier. bottom 6 is rough. but they're also fairly responsible.

So I'm torn if we should focus on a middle six or high end scorer. Kane would be great to shift Nylander down and give better PP depth... and allows to use Marner more on the PK so you can immediately send out multiple attack lines post-PK. Kane is also good at slanting the ice if his heart is into it. He and Marner are a lot alike but Kane never progressed his defensive game even though he probably has the tools for it. But cost will be severe, he will be highly sought after.

But I don't really know. Even with their faults this is a really strong group so far.

Centre depth is still lacking even with the emergence of Holmberg. Assuming everyone is on the table in San Jose, Leafs need to be calling about Nico Sturm (2Mx3, similar heavy d-zone type usage to guys like Kampf).

I dunno if they can fit into the cap but Timo Meier, Erik Karlsson and John Klingberg would be on my wishlist.

The Leafs need more offense.

Bo Horvat and here's why.

If the Leafs were to acquire Bo, or Monahan If he keeps up his level of play, or another player.

If they can acquire a #2 center It solves the top 6 wing issue because It allows them to move Tavares to the wing.

Imagine a full time line of

Tavares Matthews Marner

Or Tavares Matthews Nylander

Or Tavares Horvat Marner

Or Tavares Horvat Nylander

So many options.

and then If you ever needed to you could always run.

Matthews
Tavares
Horvat

Down the middle.

The primary idea for getting Horvat would be to move Tavares to the wing and solve the need for a top 6 winger instantly.

But If they ever wanted or needed to do It during a game the secondary option of being able to run a 3 headed monster of Matthews Tavares Horvat down the middle should the situation call for It is also enticing

Someone like Perron, Marchment, Hyman, Zuccarello, Danault, Kubalik, Matt Boldy, B.Schenn, Reilly Smith, ROR. Basically a guy who can be our 5th or 6th best forward who can play on the 2nd line or 3rd line and score 55-60 points. If they are interchangeable between C and wing even better but not necessary.

Secondary scoring should be #1! Defense is not the issue on this team honestly!

I agree but we don’t have the cap to make that happen
