I'll post the total list of people who would be shocked if the Leafs won the cup this year below:

1.
Put me on that list. I hope with all I have that they do win the cup but I would be flabbergasted if they actually did it

Hi everybody i just opened an account here. Looked around before but decided to take the plunge before this season kicks off.
My expectations for our beloved Leafs are a conference final. Maybe a little lofty considering our failures the last few years but why not break the slump in a big way.

Welcome aboard !!!!!!!!

You are right. It’s unimaginable how low our bar has become.
5-6 years into a rebuild after winning the draft lottery and we are hoping for a first round win…………totally pathetic job.
Ownership is missing in action

Well Leafs are cursed with ownership that has no knowledge of the game. So they put all their hopes in Liewike who in turn left the hockey up to Shanny. Shanny after a good start (Babs and Lou) went in the no experience required direction and it's been a gong show ever since.

Would be great if the team could be purchased by a single individual, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards.

Leafs bank on not everyone throwing in the towel. Someone like zeke is perfect for the leafs organization.

if they can get 10's of thousands of fans like that, they'll never have to worry about winning again (although I'm not sure they actually worry about winning now)

You don’t think they want to win?

Add me to the list. And if they prove us wrong, I will be the first one in here demanding to get my slice of humble pie with crow on the side.

I actually pray to god that I am going to be wrong. But, I highly doubt that I will be.

Team is good enough to be in a top 8 spot for the playoffs, not to worried about that. Losing Hyman, Jumbo and Freddy isn't exactly devastating for the team. Only downfall I could see for the Leafs is if they have trouble keeping the puck out of the net because of goaltending.

I'll believe that this team is "ready to take the next step", or the "best version of us" as Dubas says when I see it. So I went with another first round loss, I could actually see us winning the division due to Tampa going on cruise control and having to face them in the first round and getting smashed lol. (FLA is getting way to much love here, they will be good but they won't be top of the NHL good).

i expect half the curmudgeons on the boards to jump back on the bandwagon by december :D :D :D :D

Tavares has been the least of our problems. Money aside, he was a UFA who earned that contract. We should be happy he chose to come home and Captain his hometown team.

34/16 demanded the Sun and they both got it.

When you sign an outsider who’s the 3rd best player on the team to an 11.0 AAV do you expect them to take less?

The Leafs are still a very good team capable of finishing top 3 in the Atlantic, but I was so scarred by the effort of this team to come ready to play in the playoffs that for the first time in a long time my expectations for playoff success is very low. First round playoff loss unless Marner learns to care about more than just milking his childhood team.

The only hope might be that money Marner starts to realize that the mounting anger towards him might start to impact his endorsement value and pick his game up.

Still seeing lots of Koolaid drinkers, this team has not changed and yes they will have their run during the season for sure. End of season will panic time again.

There are just as many, and likely more that see the sky has fallen so far, they are above the clouds.

My expectations for the season - probably 100 pt season, excitement leading into the playoffs - from there.....who knows really.
My expectations for the board - endless fire Dubas/Shanahan threads. Armchair experts dumping on players/management/coaches/roster moves. a lot of 20/20 hindsight told ya so posts.

He was the best free agent available in recent memory, with 9 years of experience in the league, a legitimate superstar. He was signing his 3rd contract. He had earned that contract.
34/16 were coming off their entry level deals, had only been in the league 3 years. I get what you're saying, but Tavares had earned that contract. We instead paid both young guys a huge amount of money, and walked them both to free agency.
At least Tavares signed for the maximum term.
