What’s the story with Elias Pettersson?

He’s incredibly frustrating.

He maintained a 104 point pace between December 2021 (he was in the same type of slump he’s in right now prior) up until February 2024. His play was already starting to suffer though by around November/December of 2023 but he was still producing. After the all star break he’s completely just gone awol.

The thing was he had a completely unsustainable on-ice shooting % in his 100+ point career season.

Then he got lucky again when his whole team went on a heater for the first couple of months of last season.

He's a good player, but fans expecting his 100 point season to be the new normal were always setting themselves up for disappointment.

this is probably the reality of it all, which isn’t terrible at all. PPG two way center is still a key piece

Seems like a star player that leaves you wanting more.

Seems like he could be in that franchise tier but just isn't. Then the unreasonable expectations leave people disappointed.

A player less than the sum of his parts.

I don't blame vamcouver for giving that contract. It was the logical thing to do, but I was a little skeptical about him.

I know people talk about his finish last season, but there were times in that 2nd covid year where he just looked awful.

It's not to say that I expect him to be bad forever, but from a consistency standpoint, I do have some pre existing question marks. When his career is said and done, will his production look predictable year to year or will he be prone to some significant volatility? A classic case of this was Alex kovalev.

In today's league where most players are called generic shit like Soup or Juice or Noodles, "Mercurial Pete" is actually a pretty good nickname.

As for the player, it's clear by this thread we've got two different type of opinions, one by people who watches him all the time (Canucks fans, calling him a moody bean pole and pointing out he's been that way long before the current deal) and then people who probably catch him once or twice per season saying he's a lazy cat on a (newly acquired) big bag of money.

I think it's probably a combination of mental things and physical things, not necessarily injury but perhaps afraid of getting injured, and/or nursing some old stuff. Guy isn't exactly built like Brad Pitt in Troy.

Yeah he's not a perfect player, doesn't really have the build for sustaining the grind, playing through injuries etc. but he's a great player who will probably go on a heater soon.

In the start of season press conference he said the tendonitis in his knee was still there. That's an obvious physical factor that affects his play, but also affects his mindset as he clearly prefers to sacrifice offense and maintain his defense. That aggregated over a year has changed his game to the point it's at now.

• Canucks management believes Pettersson has another one/two levels to get to.
• Last year was about keeping Pettersson happy so he would re-sign—this year it’s about kicking him out of his funk even if it means making him uncomfortable.
• They are using Hughes and Miller to get Pettersson going rather than using management/coaching.
• Pettersson has people around him who are feeding him media articles and social media and it’s creating a toxic environment.

Pettersson and Miller had a little “fight”, apparently some slashes and got in each others face and exchanged some word. Apparently Miller called him a baby.
