We do 3v3 OT wrong

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
By the end of the season someone needs to make a compilation video of all our OT finishes.

Would be quite the comedic piece.

Should probably start with the best combo of three players but sure let's try to win the game based on feelings. If anything feelings should've told him to start with the Matthews-Nylander duo since they scored tonight, not Mitch and JT.

Keefe constantly makes these weird comments. This isn't peewee house league hockey where every player gets a chance to play. Start your best players.

No, the discussion you jumped into was about a specific sample. But yes, the NHL average SV% in OT is ~0.850, and the Leafs in that sample were getting 0.467, which is much worse.

What are you even talking about? You do realize that OT isn't first shot wins, right? Goalies are allowed to and do make saves in OT.

It's OK, Math is not for everyone, you do you.

What? The winning team can win 4:59 into OT, with their goalie having made 10 saves before they went and scored the winner. What am I not getting here?

Math?

If a team wins in OT their save percentage can only be one of two things, no shots on goal or the goalie makes every save (1.000%), a winning team can never have a sv% less than 1.000%. The winning team SV% can only be one of two things to the over all SV% in OT, 1) have zero influence (no shots on goal) or 2) weight it with a 1.000%.

Comparing a team who has a recent history of losing in OT vs the over all NHL SV% makes zero sense, half of the winning teams will have a 1.000% sv% and most games are decided in OT. If their recent record is 3-8 in OT their SV% is going to be shitty, that is a newsflash for only one person on this forum, in the 3 games they won take a guess what their SV% is, it's going to be, it will be a revelation to no one.

You just tried to argue that it's impossible for the winning team in OT to have any shots against and that all SV% numbers were irrelevant - something multiple people called you out on - and you're accusing other people of not knowing math?

I know math quite well, but you don't need to to see that you were wrong.

This may come as a shock, but losing goaltenders can still make saves. They don't have to instantly lose on the first shot. And sometimes they could even make saves and win!

Over the past few years...
New York Islanders have a losing record in OT... 0.875 SV%
Philedelphia Flyers have a losing record in OT... 0.859 SV%
Vancouver Canucks have a losing record in OT... 0.849 SV%
Los Angeles Kings have a losing record in OT... 0.833 SV%
Etc.

If team A takes 10 shots on team B's goaltender in OT, and he saves all of them, and then team B comes down and takes one equivalent shot on team A's goaltender and it goes in, then the goaltending is very relevant to the outcome. You would argue that team A's goaltending is irrelevant because the team lost, but team A lost primarily because of the goaltending. To ignore that would be illogical.

You could also have team A's goalie make that save, and it comes back down and team A finally scores on team B's goalie. Team B lost, but team B's goalie had a 0.909 SV% in OT - above league average.

There's absolutely no reason to ignore how the goaltender performs, win or lose.

I also think Rielly is the wrong defenseman to start OT with. He's horrendous on 2 on 1's and OT naturally has an abundance of them. I'd rather have Lilly or Brodie out there instead of Mo
They started Liljegren not Rielly

they need to take shorter shifts in OT. They stay out for way too long. If you can’t get it going throw it back in our end and change. We always try and make a dumb play instead of circle back and keep possession.

Engvall should play in OT more

on the bright side even though we lost 2 games recently, we still earned 2 points. So if you think about it, we won a game despite losing twice. Gotta love this system!

The playbook for other teams is obvious. Get into OT, get or wait for possession, then get them chasing. NYI wanted OT so bad last night they tried running the entire last minute of the 3rd period down. Teams are licking their chops to play against us in OT. We are entirely too sloppy in OT and give games away there.

Solely on the players. Those low IQ plays are their fault.

Short of Keefe just flat out deciding to bench his top guys in OT because they don't have basic hockey IQ, guys who are supposed to be among the best in the league at this, his hands are pretty much tied. I am assuming he has already had a talk with these guys on more than a few occasions.

Considering the number of "play your best players" comments here, i don't think many would love if Malgin and Kampf? were put out there to start OT. At this point, that may be the only thing Keefe can do to tell these core guys to get their heads on straight.

And that is something a coach should never have to deal with at any point. Not from these guys.

Why can’t we start with like an Engvall Nylander Liljegren group? 3 players who are good at keeping possession and have good skating abilities

and the irony is that's what NYI did - start a defensive unit first and then send their guns out 2nd.

They're working on it at least lol

Wild that this is noteworthy. Other teams practice 3v3 OT, have a clear strategy they work on, but we’ve just been winging it? It shows.

Hopefully we get better at it, and stop shedding so many points unnecessarily.

The obvious thing is to have 2 lines in OT but I'd really like to see Tavares and Matthews out to start.
