Post-Game Talk: We Blew a 3-0 Lead in the Third Period to the Oilers

We have one of the best goalies in the league. It's infuriating to watch how many tough saves he has to make. Another thing, we should have a really good D-corps in terms of puck moving D. Fox obviously, but Miller, Schneider, Jones... Yet we play so f***ing slow. We look so slow. It's about moving the puck, and it starts with the D. Yet at times it seems like Fox is the only guy who can make a breakout pass.

We are just playing like shit. And have been doing so for a long time,

That is on the coaches and management. For whatever reason they want to play like this. I've said since coming out of training camp LAST SEASON that the Rangers have a huge issue with the modern transition game. Bring in a coach that can fix the D zone issues and the transition issues, speed up the pace of the puck movement and a lot of the problems will go away.

Yes.

And skating, shooting, and passing is what opens up the dirty areas.

You can't just will NHL defenders out of the way no matter how bad you want it.

This organization doesn't like skill. It trades skill. It doesn't do well coaching skill. And we wonder what's fundamentally wrong.

I think this organization still has a hair up its ass about the Flyers beating them up in 1975 and they need to get over it.
I believe that’s the exact thing though. Some heavy weight from an opposing team tracks down Lindgren ( who will not back down) and destroys Ryan in a fight. Then the team plays timid and their vulnerable to headhunting.
At the end of 2021 season twice against Long Island, Trouba got destroyed in an open ice hit by Martin and Lindgren’s head was ridden into the dasher by Cizikas(?). No response. The Rangers were pushing for a playoff spot at that time and fell apart.
How many times do we need to watch that same story. Rolfe, Brooke, Kamensky, Bell, Gaborick, Stepan, Panarin, Buchnevich, etc…

Fotiu, Kocur, Domi, etc… are deterrents. Then Reaves is on the team and for last season the Capitals and Long Island become Choir boys when they play against us. This team does not have a wolfpack mentality. They’re not built that way. Davidson arrived and the full rebuild stopped. Teams that stick up for one another are teams built of players that came up together or came up through the same path. Drury’s last two drafts have been assembling players to be with that edge, but until the time they arrive we need an enforcer.
The only thing humans seem to learn about history is that they don’t learn from history.

Is it sad that I’m to the point with this team where I’m willing to trade Kravstov busting if it means Gauthier turning into a competent bottom 6 player?

God why does this team do this to me lol
Yes, this team has an opening for a top 6 RW and through health and the coaches decisions the one player on the current roster who could possibly fill that roll is being stifled, Kravtsov.
I wish I could give credit to the poster who stated;
Panarin Trocheck Kratsov
Kreider Zibanejad Vesey
Kid Line
Blais Goodrow Gauthier
By January hopefully someone shines in Hartford to take Vesey’s spot and if not if we are still in contention, Drury brings in a Vatrano type to take that spot and move Jimmy to the 13th forward position. Or move Kakko up with Zibanejad and fill his spot with a player who plays “big” and allows his teammates to do the same.

This is the reason this coaching team has to go. Everyone loves Gallant as their favorite Hockey Uncle, but he does not have what the team needs. Kelly and Murphy are nothing. It's irrelevant that previous coaches have been poor. It's obvious this core needs structure and to play a fast paced, modern skill game.

Also Drury has holes to fix on the roster, but he is responsible for a lot of them by pandering to his bosses.
No completely wrong. This team has gotten lazy. That’s not because of a lack of structure. Their skill is not in question here. Right now what’s in question is their effort level, compete level and leadership.

It will never happen but I’d strip Trouba of the C. It’s clearly been a mistake but saying a coach who will clamp down on the offensively gifted players on this roster and make them play vintage “trap era” hockey is so far from what this team needs it’s laughable.

This is a big thing. The team around him was terrible, but at least 2 of those goals were extremely stoppable. Team was stinking up the joint but a 3 goal lead in the third period? It was 3-3 by just halfway into the period. You can't blow a 3 goal lead in 10 minutes.

Serious question, did Lundqvist ever blow a 3 goal 3rd period lead and lose in regulation? His career was so long, it may have happened but I can't remember.
Yeah pretty certain there was that game in Montreal where the Rangers were up (5)? Goals and the Canadiens came back to win in O.T.

I’m throwing out a new perspective here. I think the Rangers are pacing themselves. Seriously, half the team burnt out in the playoffs last season and I suspect came into this season with the mindset that they can’t go all out for 82 games and then enter the playoffs as fatigued as they must have been. That’s really the only viable excuse for why this team looks so incredibly slow.

If you compare the speed of the Devils right now( a team that is clearly going all out) they seriously look twice as fast as the Rangers. Aside from Carpenter and Blais( who both can’t skate and are useless) this roster is largely the same as last year. 0% chance all these guys got slower. It has to be a decision to “get through” the regular season and then push hard in the playoffs.

Now what’s becoming problematic is the roster needs to be adjusted and soon. The lack of a number 6 dman, the Vesey effect( talentless forwards in key roles), the worst backup goalie in 20 years are dragging the team down to a point where the playoffs are becoming a question.

And yet the crowd here chased edge away (again) for telling the truth. Almost did the same recently with @Amazing Kreiderman as well

HFNYR has turned into a room full of toddlers crying about everything that isn't 100% positive.

We should just create an HFNYR alumni forum where we only allow people who were here prior to 2017

The Jets blew a 3-0 lead with 3 minutes left the other day on 3 goals with the goalie pulled (and won in OT) yet this thread is off the rails about the season being over and such. It happens. The rangers are hardly the first team to blow a 3-0 lead in the third period and won’t be the last.

In fact the Panthers literally did almost the exact same thing yesterday blowing a 4-1 lead in the third period and then losing (in overtime).

I saw a problem with Gord Murphy and the players. He was talking to them before a PK shift and Vesey and Mika just gave him a blank stare with no response. They then skated to faceoffs with a faccia brutta...there is where a change may occur

Yeah I don't like making hasty moves, but the team does not look like they're ready to turn any corners and they need a shake up.

IDK who the other head coaching candidates would be, and I do like Turk, but if he needs to take the fall then so be it.
Turk isn’t the problem. As always, it’s the leadership.

As I said before, this performance wasn't a one-off. This is indicative of the season. This is a .500 or below team this year when all is said and done; there is no leadership. Going to be very frustrating the rest of the way.

Maybe. Gallant is too stubborn and loyal to let one of his assistants go. Maybe in the off season.

It was a weird interaction. The players definitely had poker faces going on.

I was joking lol but one thing that annoys the f*** out of me with him is how slow he is. There are so many times he has really lazy/slow backchecks. Doesn’t help we have an 8 million dollar traffic coke in Trouba. Our D could use a speedy puck mover like Quinn Hughes, we are the slowest team in the league
He isn't as slow as you make him out to be.
Sure , any team could use a Quinn Hughes, but he is not an effective two way player. He shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as Fox.

Considering it was their worst CF% of the year, only second game below 40%, worst xG%, and the only time they blew a 3-0 lead I would say that is basically the definition of a one-off performance.

I really think this point is missed when the team blows a game like this.
People talk about structure etc.. but fail to realize that most teams aspire to the SAME structure with minor tweaks. It's not the f***ing structure, its the EXECUTION!
It's a players league and the vets need to step up and set the example.
I think Mika is super talented, but that MF'er looks like he would rather be spinning records in an alley than playing hockey.
Trouba gets the stick knocked out of his hand by Drai with NO RESPONSE! He needed to pick the first guy he saw and dragged him to the ice! If this guy isn't being physical, he's is a net negative.
Last one is Bread. I think that he does give it his all but he just isn't the guy who is going to press the middle of the ice. He is an important piece if this team is going to have success. We will just have to live with the turnovers and perimeter play.

They already blew multi-goal leads in the 3rd. This was the third time they did that. This one just happened to be even worse than the others because it was 3 goals. We are all watching the same games here, something is rotten with this group right now.

Game they lost against Detroit, OK you move on to the next one it happens. Game against the Islanders, that hurt sure, but hey at least we are still in playoff position. Now this? What will the analytics say after tomorrow night? They lose to good teams, they lose to absolutely putrid teams too.

This isn't a San Jose or Anaheim (we lost to both lol), this team is EXPECTED to win.

I hope this team goes on a winning streak, but they have shown nothing so far that says they can go on a 3 period streak let alone multi game.

*Edit* But I am way more concerned with the future post this year. Others have laid out the case better than I could.

Couple of bad lazy penalties and a bad goal killed us . Kreider being weak on the big German on the winning goal....lot's of reasons for this loss . Turk should have called a time out for sure...that is what they are for . On the flip side...we could have gave McDavid a shot /glove palm or a goalie spray on Soupy or at least something to change the pace up but we NEVER do that stuff......we are the easiest club in the NHL to play against . Soft as poop most games . The only bright spot so far this season is that Gauthier might hit 15 goals ...as I previously said he could .

I would stick some guys in an unfamiliar role.....we need to change the look up .

I would also change up the PP ...it is too predictable . I would also play Laf-Trocheck-Gauthier as a line let them remain together for a few games as a second line? and they should be fast and abrasive and generate some offense . Kreider-Chytil-Kakko as the main unit and Panarin-Zibs -Kravs as the third line where they will face lesser D and less talented forwards which could lead to a bit more offense .

Although I suggested what line should be 1-2-3....with how this club plays.....Gallant should go with the line that is doing the right things . Plus with this look I suggested we have the kids spread out over 3 lines and nobody sitting for long stretches and at least 2 lines that can play along the boards and in the corners and Panarin line should face weaker opponents .

With a back to back coming up against Ottawa....I would also have Miller maybe sit a game if Lindgren is back and let him watch things . He needs a kick in the butt . We have to get muckier and play harder in the trenches to win more games....going through the motions and the skate by plays won't work in this league . Miller has to be more physical with that big body and reach .....he certainly is not leaving it all on the ice .

With each passing game it’s more clear that we better hold on to those first round picks. May need to rethink this entire thing sooner than we thought.

This team has a F1 track car frame, fitted with monster truck tires, and a motor from an 86 Dodge Reliant K.

Keep the firsts Chris! Bank em like the Targaryians bank Dragon eggs.

It's not the individual game, but rather the poor performance over the course of the first quarter of the season, that has folks livid.

Team looks like it's going to need multiple rentals to even be competitive, and that gets expensive over time. That's how we ended up at 'the letter' stage of organizational prospect depth.
