Post practice today Sutter was vague on Greene (game 2)

Helene Elliott ‏@helenenothelen 11m More Sutter on Greene: 'You don’t just put him in the lineup because he’s Matt Greene. Matt Greene has to be able to play, to perform.'

and on Ellerby

Helene Elliott ‏@helenenothelen 5m Sutter on Greene, referring to Muzzin and Ellerby: 'I’m quite happy playing those two kids because they’re both very capable, too.'

Wow...if that performance makes him happy

No, Greene isn't available and he doesn't see a reason to bash a couple of kids when they are putting forth their best effort and they are all he has to put out there.

one thing i noticed was that STL was really matching lines that contributed to the pressure. when LA's #3 or $ was out there they would instantly switch and put out there top lines, at the same time they also did this against the D pairing of Muzzerby with their bottom line. Sutter has flat out said he doesn't play into this style of coaching, but it was evident last night that STL's success was attributable to them matching lines.

the Blues gap pressure and reads were excellent last night. their 3rd O man was always on top of LA's break out pass once we got past the first two forecheckers (which wasn't always that clean or done well enough). the STL D were also right up tight to so there was no room. as the game continued they had lapses and breakdowns, but overall they played a very good up ice tempo and tilted the ice

Going to be so mad if Martinez isn't playing if Greene isn't. Need his puck moving skills desperately

We are clearly not the same team as last yr, & due to injuries, we havent been all yr. But surely, we can put forth better effort than we did last night. That was truly sad! They are still better than the Blues and hopefully they will start proving it.

KINGS FOREVER

As bad as Muzzerby were, my favorite was when Reghr and Ellerby were paired together for occasional shifts. Throw that pairing out there and they just never leave the defensive zone

I am one of the biggest Greene supporters on this board, but does anyone remember how bad he was the last two games he played? He's simply not ready to perform in the playoffs...he had more tackles than hits the last two games he played.

The defense is just nowhere near as good as it was last year and the reason nothing was happening up front is because the break out sucks when, last year, it was one of the team's biggest strengths. Muzzerby were relieved just to get the puck out of the zone, nevermind making a good pass.

Kings looked like the Kings playoff opponents from last year. Going to need to figure things out quickly.

lol. That pairing spent every shift hemmed in their own zone unable to breakout. Thats even more painful considering how many offensive zone starts they got, that instantly turned them back into their own zone.

Why Ellerby played over Martinez i don't know. Its clear we need Martinez's puck moving ability to get past the forecheck

I don't see it happening though since it took 50 minutes for Sutter to finally take Clifford off Kopitars wing, only to replace him with Richardson...sigh.

Hopefully this loss gets him to go back to the cup winning lines

It was more than them that were hemmed in their own end, and I thin kit was not all on them as the forwards needed to recognize the preasure come back and help out. The fact that we could not win a friggin defensive zone faceoff didn't help the cause either.

First playoff game I think the strides they made between the first and third periods were very noticable.

True, the Kings only won 36% of the faceoffs, which is just brutal. Just winning more faceoffs will flip the fortunes a bit

It sure will that and no Offensive zone penalties.
I forgot what Blue player it was (Backes I htink) had the puck and a king defender came int opreasure him and he through and elbow jsut like Brown's on Pomminville. Only difference was no injury.
Don't think it was worthy of a penalty I just have issues letting petty **** go. haha

It was a strange night with the linesman too. The kings' centers were kicked out a lot. There were several times when the Kings won the faceoff cleanly and they blew it dead and the St. Louis won the faceoff.

BTW, Eklund picked the Kings to win... :(

I noticed the win and then blew down as well.

It was all Blues in the first. You can't lose that many faceoffs and not chase the puck. The game was evening out somewhat after that, but every time it did, the Blues 4th line came on the ice and just destroyed the Kings defense to take back some momentum.

The Kings stuck with it, stuck with it, stuck with it. Quick bailed them out again and again, and again, and again, and again, giving the team a chance because it stayed a 1 shot game. It took almost the entire game, but they finally found that shot with 30 seconds to play.

In OT, the Kings were finally in the game. They were making things happen. Forced the Blues into taking a penalty. That PP was going to decide the game. Either the Kings score a steal a game, or the Blues kill it off, get back some momentum, and probably win the game some time after that. Quick just made an all too familiar Quick-type play with the puck(forget the 1st round, he did it in the conference and Cup finals last year), and that was the game.

Guys on this team have lost a Game 1 before. They've been down in a series before. They've all had bad playoff games before. This series should go 6 or 7 games. By any sort of measure it should have last year too, but the Kings were just in the middle of a historic playoff run.

It was one punch to the mouth. Hockey isn't one and done.

Optional practice today, those who are participating:

Helene Elliott ‏@helenenothelen 5m Players practicing: Bernier, Penner, Nolan, Fraser, Martinez, Greene, King, Lewis, Richardson, Ellerby, Clifford, Muzzin, Toffoli
I hope that Greene can play on Thursday, he was much missed.

As many others have cited already, I think the fact the Blues played their A game and the Kings for the most part didn't show up and almost won in OT is a good sign.

I thought Penner played much better in the latter stages and iin OT. He used his body effectively to control the puck. Maybe he moves up by Thursday.

I thought the Kings played much closer to their real game in OT.

THey know they have to play much better and I think we can expect a much better more complete game on Thursday.

Major Props to Regehr for playing after taking a skate to the face and breaking his nose- warrior! (and lucky, that could have been terrible if the blade hit him)

Sutter isn't perfect. I guess this is where his downfall is. He's very blind when it comes to Muzzin and Ellerby. He can be the reason we lose these series. Really idiot move by Sutter if he puts them out together again tomorrow. I'm hoping he doesn't but I think he's blind to their mistakes . the blues are too physical you basically have to double shift Doughty.

The ONLY thing I can hang my hat on after last night was that the Blues through absolutely everything they had at an out-of-sorts Kings team last night and they STILL almost lost.

If the Kings play to their ability, they'll probably have a shot at winning game 2, but boy howdy the hill to climb to win this series is really, really steep without Greene. Our top 6 without Greene and Mitchell is not Stanley Cup caliber.

I think Elliot is still kinda fragile. Had the OT turned out differently, today we're talking about how Quick stole one, and Elliot gave one away.

How good would Martinez really be though? When was the last time he played?

Honestly atleast we've seen Martinez perform at a high level and these kids especially Ellerby hasn't even showed that, he's been stagnant. Martinez right now couldn't be any worse, but at least he has promise cause we have seen him last year.

Sadly and I know it's too soon to say this but I really think we need to cut Greene and Mitchell from our team in the off season. We really need to press hard for two d men in the offseason. Greene looks like his body isn't keeping up anymore. It's too soon to say but it's risky not to consider trading him. Idk.

Double shifting Doughty is not really an option. He won't have any legs left by game 4 (assuming the Blues 4th line hasn't taken his head off by game 3).

It might really be the case that Muzzerby IS Sutter's best option.

It's hard to replace Mitchell and Greene.

If you watch Sutter's interview today, it looks like Greene won't be ready for tomorrow. He's aware that Muzzerby struggled, but he has to play them.

Sutter also said that we made it to OT with two lines and four D. So hopefully some of those guys wake up because of the loss.

Has Greene really been that hurt since coming to LA? I understand Mitchell he's been injury prone his whole career, but this is the first time I remember Greene being really hurt.

If Muzzin and Ellerby have to stay in the line up, then just don't pair them together.
Doughty/ Muzzin
Voynov/ scuds
Ellerby/ reggie

No he's been solid but a major back surgery and now an undisclosed injury. Who really knows if this isn't the same thing? What If it's a career ending injury? It seems pretty big.
