They're all cash grabs, none more so than the Olympics. There are legitimate reasons for not liking the World Cup but the desire to make money from it isn't one of them.
I don't really disagree. I don't hate the World Cup because of its nature as a cash grab either. I hate it because of the gimmicks (which was something Forsberg also addressed). However, it was still negative press to the World Cup coming from a pretty notable hockey figure instead of a random Internet loon.

That being said, they got Anton Strålman to give a comment to what Foppa said, and his answer was: "It's the NHL. Of course it's about the money." So yeah.

I don't like the gimmicks either but it's not going to stop me from watching. As for Forsberg, he's become a bit of a crank. It's not surprising he'd say what he did.

I don't certainly expect that Forsberg's comments are going to stop anyone from watching. Or think they should because of it.

Regardless, it's a good notion towards the fact that if you wish to hear honest opinions, you can only reliably get them from people not involved.

Come to think of it, most of the participanting teams seem to have a small legion of former players hanging around as "advisors". One certainly can't help wondering if the NHL insisted on involving them so that they don't speak out against the event from the outside.

I think it will do fine just based on hockey fans being ready to watch hockey. I'm pretty damn pumped that McDavid, Eichel, Matthews and a ton of other great young players are going to be on my tv tonight.

Ehhh this just reminds me of Forsberg's whining before the 2014 Olympic gold medal game. I agree with his point about the gimmicks (don't care about the money aspect) but I don't think he is speaking out on behalf of silenced players or anything. The players wouldn't face repercussion for speaking out negatively about this tournament if they wanted to.

I don't think either that Forsberg is speaking out on behalf of anyone but himself.

Regardless, there may be players who have similar thoughts as him, but don't bother outing them before they can be reliably comfortable that it doesn't come back to bite them in the backside. It may be that doing so wouldn't as it is, but it's certainly reasonable to wait and see what they say about this a few years down the road.

Exhibition game between Finland and Sweden drew attendance of around 11,000. That's like remotely interesting Euro Hockey Tour game. Guess that the ticket prices (starting around 80$) were bit steep, as the game broadcasted also on public access TV. But anyways.

My gut feeling is that I'll probably catch as many games as I can, but the same time this World Cup with made-up teams just doesn't feel like real international tournament. :(

The Russia v Czechia game had a great crowd.

IOC can be even greedier, but the difference is that they still get the sporting side right instead of just pulling things out of hat. The decision to include these two you know what teams was definitely driven solely by money (more NHL players on ice = more butts on the seats). I can't come up anything comparable and as stupid from any ball sport.

Since you live in Toronto can you answer this question?
Are Canadiens not into it because of the stupid format or was there no chance no matter what the NHL did?

ZERO buzz here is confirmed. Although I did watch the game tonight it hardly resembles the Olympics and I wish they would lay off driving this down our throats. My interest may pick up but right now I'm still overly interested. It's Olympics or bust!

dude, its pre-tournament with a bad team and a pretty good team. Give it 2 weeks at least.

I'm sure Latvia vs. Germany at the Olympics was just beautiful hockey.

How many guys here had to google "gimmick" to see what it meant?

Stop *****ing and complaining and enjoy a ton of high skill level players we might never again get to see play together. :yo:

how come the nhl keeps getting **** up on for trying to make money and not possibly going to the Olympics. how come ioc doesn't get **** upon for Olympics that will make all the money off the nhl players, expects them to shut down their season, and then not even pay their insurance or travel costs.

I'm not posting this to be negative or to take a shot at this tournament, but to share a casual fan's perspective.

I don't really understand what this World Cup of Hockey is and I don't want to bother expanding the effort to understand or watch it. It's basically pre-season as far as I'm concerned given the timing, and I don't care about anything pre-season.

I didn't watch the Finland Sweden game but from the highlights it looked pretty physical

I'd expect as much. Those aren't gimmick teams.

That's very understandable. How embarrassing that the NHL doesn't understand nationalism and that these (very obvious) things need to be spelled out to them. If they undestood these things, Team Europe wouldn't even exist. Suggesting they pick an artificial anthem was yet another insult.

That was my point.

alot of people thought the entire tourny would be an Allstar game. And I don't think it showed team north America didn't care they looked like they were having a blast.

Just happened to be more dominant and not have past hate for eachother.

I don't want to stop the olympics because of this, but I'm absolutely dumbfounded that people are complaining about this NA team. People don't want to see McDavid, Eichel, and Matthews all on a team together? Let alone the other insane and exciting players in that lineup? What exactly is the issue with that?

This horse has been beaten to death for at least 100 times on this board, but I will answer you regardless: because nobody (including the NHL) has the right to redefine international hockey, and Team NA U23 or whatever you want to call it does not represent a country. Only national teams should be allowed in international tournaments. The firmat was not broken and therefore no changes were needed.

Crosby and Ovechkin may never play on the same team either, so does that mean that there should no longer be a Team Canada and a Team Russia but a joint Canada/Russia team instead? Or how about creating Team European Right-Handed U25. I'm sure that would features some great players too. Isn't it a shame that most of them will never play together either?

This is not about how exciting the players may be, this is about principles. The NHL no longer wants to attend the Olympics, but instead of organizing a tournament that could have had prestige and could have been a proper Olympic replacement, they decided to arrange a tournament only meant to appeal to North American fans and disregard the fact that Europeans in general are quite nationalistic when it comes to sports (not just the fans, but the players as well) and therefore will not be too happy to have non-national teams in a seemingly international tournament.

The timing of the tournament is what is affecting it.

These games are preseason games, players aren't in form yet and it's just stupid timing.

Had they played the games at the same time as the Winter Olympics, it would have been better
