Funny poll results from the Edmonton Journal with regard to the question: "What do you most want to see from the World Cup of Hockey?"

That no player on my favourite NHL team get injured - 813 votes

Team North America win - 755 votes

That it NOT replace the 2018 Olympics as hockey's major international tournament - 573 votes

Team Canada win - 442 votes

A European winner - 32 votes

Team USA win - 21 votes

Article also accurately describes this tournament for what it is as well.

They should lower the prices so that regular citizens can buy the tickets. I don't know if they are banking on selling tickets to all the suits that usually go to leafs games but it's ridiculous for tickets to cost $700+ for mediocre seats. Why pay that when I can pay $50 for my cable package and watch it with a better view

There are plenty of affordable tickets on Stubhub.

Czech Rep-Europe
Finland-Sweden
Finland-Russia
Czech Rep-USA

...The above games currently have starting prices of <$20, and the only games that currently have a starting price of >$50 are the Canada games and the playoff games.

Unless the secondary market really starts to pickup I imagine these prices will drop as there would appear to be a substantial glut of tickets available. Canada's games against the Czech Rep and the US each have well over 3000 tickets available, and the game against (some of) Europe has well over 4000 tickets available. Any other game I have checked also has at least 3000 tickets available, and some had over 4000.

It is only by luck that Canadians aren't more enraged by the NA team since we're only losing one player (McDavid).

We'll see what the reaction is if Canada loses. I don't think that Hockey Canada would have agreed to that team if Canada was using a larger number of young players like in some past tournament. We know that USA Hockey wasn't as big on the idea, which makes sense given that they are hurt more by the gimmick.

This must mean team usa cares about this tournament considering what gets sent to the whc. Or maybe they are mad they can't send a team of college players because most of them are too young

Looking a USA's odd roster construction... who knows.

Good to see that people mostly have similar opionions on it. In one moment I thought that I am old-school person who completely missed last 20 years of hockey and its trends. I have to add that WC coverage is quite big here though. That bad predictions certainly helped a lot...

Or how about...

Sweden & Finland create a team together.

Russia & Czechs

Canada & USA.

Then the three teams meet in a league where they face the other teams twice. The two teams with most points after all games are played, face eachother in a final over 5 games.

THAT, I would watch the **** out of.

Russia & Czechs forming a team. Seriously? Not enough  in the world for this one.

No American would make the Canadian team :) Finland would look really good with Sweden's D.

You don't really know the CZE-RUS tension do you ? I mean if i should pick a team from the TOP 6 that we can always win with, no matter what the rosters look like, it's Russia. And trust me, it has something to do with politics.

that's interesting - I would not expect that. I thought this stupid "world cup" was detested by all Europeans

It still is something hard to detest when besides the Olympics, is the best we will get to see this calibre of players playing against each other for their countries. perfect, no of course not, but it will still be something hugely entertaining and prideful to watch

I googled World Cup two days ago and found tons of articles about whether it is cash grab, bust, about gimmicks etc. Basically all these writers considered whether it is relevant tourney or not. Most of them, or even all I read were from NA websites.Only one article form some Islanders colummist was positive about it hoping it completely replace OGs.

No one really doubt it in CZ, I read some articles in main newsapapers when they announced the concept, they mostly pointed it is quite extraordinary idea. Then I found some of that reactions in discussions but it was not definetely same intensity as it comes from NA.

Wasn't all that interested in the tournament when it was first announced, but am now actually pretty excited for it to start.

... perhaps I just miss watching hockey.

Here's one pretty profilic (former) player saying what he thinks about this World Cup...

...and he pretty much echoes the HFBoards' most staunch critics' talking points. (Link in Swedish, sorry.)

It's Peter Forsberg. And, in a nutshell, he pretty much a) calls the World Cup an "NHL cash grab", b) says the gimmick teams are "silly" and c) thinks that the World Cup will never be as important as the Olympics.

It's a single individual's opinion, yes, but still a curious one. Foppa obviously has no need any longer to play a tune to the NHL's fiddle, so it echoes something I said earlier - we only get to know what the players really think about this event when they retire and release their memoirs.

They're all cash grabs, none more so than the Olympics. There are legitimate reasons for not liking the World Cup but the desire to make money from it isn't one of them.
