Ok where to begin...

I thought this was an Alex Dell nightmare again, thats how horribly bad this "referee" was. All through the game he kept making really questionable, borderline Pejorative Slured calls. It did not seem to matter what was actually done, he just wanted the other team to keep the puck in the attacking zone for one minute, and he would give a penalty to the defending team. There was absolutely no reason for most of his calls, he just waited for a certain period of time for the other team to keep the puck, and punished the defender. Very weak, not even close to international level. I dont wanna see this travesty of a ref ever again, at least not in any games that Finland plays. This guy is in the same league as Alex Dell...I would not mind if both of them just disappeared from the face of the earth. Good riddance.

And what THE **** was that in the end? THIS IS NOT GOD DAMN BASEBALL where you can run into the guy holding the ball and hope for it to fall from his glove. Bäckström made a normal save, had the puck in his glove and Parrish ran into him and slapped his glove to get the puck out and then kicked it in. I dunno if he meant to kick it, but that has nothing to do with the actual "crime" here. Clear case of goalie interference. Maybe the Pejorative Slur "ref" has been an umpire before or something, but a hockey ref he most certainly ain't.

Even the linesmen sucked today....they missed so many icings its not funny.

Both teams did their best...USA tried to keep it in the wrestling, Finland tried to keep it in the skating. USA got tired in the end, and Finland got back into the game and even got the lead with a great shot by Ruutu. Too bad USA got a freebie in the end. Can't blame the team for trying that sort of goals...can only blame the ref for not calling it off. Hal Gill rocked again!

Actually if you take a look at the replay it seems Backstrom bobbled the puck before Parrish ran into him.

Terrible game by both teams. USA losing their 2 goal lead and Finland losing their lead in few minutes.

Pärssinen should have scored on the breakaway. He also had 2 players coming behind so actually it was 3 against 0 and he missed it.

Then the 4-4 goal wasn't a kick, it was goalie inteference. Bäckström had the puck in his glove, but he dropped it when Parrish crashed him at the grease.

Finland is going to be in deep trouble with Canada.

Team USA scored and it's 4-4.

Too easy. Bäcks should have hold that one imo.

He did have it. In his glove. Before Parrish slapped it and it dropped.

NO GOAL. Not in a million years. The kicking part is not important. When a goalie has a puck in his glove and he lifts it up to show the ref to call it off, there is no chance in hell that one can go and slap it out of the glove and kick it in. At least there wasnt before today.

I did, and he had the puck and Parrish ran into him and the puck flew out.

And he said that in the interview just now....he was shocked that it counted because it was so obvious goalie interference.

It seemed so to me too. Bäckström didn't have a good hold of the puck and nod from Parrish knocked the puck loose. Then the puck just happened to hit his skate and deflected in. It was a justified goal and a bad luck for Team Finland imho.

Edit: A goalie interference? A borderline at best imo.

I`ve seen million goals scored like that. The referee let the game continue and Team USA scored. Puck was never really in Bäckström`s glove

Big deal. And it wasn`t a kick.

that's what I said...
well, not the glove part, I didn't want to get the entire HFboards gang all over me.

He didn't have the puck in control, I think the goal was good.

Still the biggest mistake was not to score on breakaway just before 4-4 goal. So no blaming for ref about the "loss". It was in "our" hands.

********...he had the puck in control, lifted his glove to signal the ref to blow the whistle, Parrish ran into him with his arm extended and suddenly it bounced out.

It was a **** goal and a total mistake from the ref...a clear goalie interference.

If a Finnish player would have had Conklins glove like that, he would have never gotten a goal, but he would have gotten his ass handed to him by Gill etc. That is what I often see when people go hit goalies after saves

hey, i totally agree, but what's the point of arguing with the blind ?
suck it up, i couldn't stand the officiating

No he hadn't. He had the puck in his lap but he wasn't in control of the puck. Now be a good boy and accept the tie. After all, considering the game against Team Sweden, this was a good game from Team Finland.

You still have your homer glasses on, come on, all other finns here say the same as I do.

We can't fault a marginal call when guys like Pärä and Kallio totally screw up their rare chances, we can't fault the ref (who made bad calls) for Westerlund dressing a total tourist like Saravo only to be undressed by every opponent forward.

Disagree. It's more of an underdog thing. Honestly If I were you I would actually be half-way hoping that American fail miserably this year. That might embarass Hockey USA enough to start getting the Top US players out again for international games. Where is Roenick? Where is Tkachuk? Where is Hatcher?

These guys should be coming out to play for the USA and I think only if they hit rock bottom will these guys start to realize they should be proud to represent their country

where are they?

they're aging and making way for the next generation.

and I wouldn't call breaking in a bunch of late teen-mid 20 somethings hitting rock bottom.

There is ALWAYS room for whining about horrible referee mistakes like that, and several of the penalties he gave in this game. You are right about Kallio sucking balls in this game, he was a trainwreck today and should probably be replaced by someone else...but then again the line found at least some sort of balance today. Kallio was crap on both ends, I think he even assisted on that 3-1 goal, and he kept losing the puck everywhere, couldnt get a shot off of a breakaway...he did all these things, and he never sucked even nearly as bad as the ref did. Now how bad is that...

Hell, Roitto showing his belly in the stands was more pleasurable sight than most of the calls this ****e ref made. :shakehead

And no...if you and some others saw wrong, it does not mean I have to adapt to that and join you guys in that ;)

I'm hoping there's a replay of this game on TSN later tonight. I want to see this for myself. Overall, if you look back at some of the posts, I think most people thought that US were gonna hand Finland their a$$e$. A 4-4 tie is a decent score and proves that Finland is not the turkey that people thought they were.

:amazed:

Time to move on. The ref did not decide this game, unlike the USA vs. Latvia game. That game should have ended with a 3-2 Latvian victory.

A very exciting game! Nice hockey all the way.. Unfortunately didn't end the way I would've liked, but still a nice bounce back from the Sweden game from us.

Unlike I expected, Bäckström seemed unbelievably shaky at times, giving out some weird rebounds and, of course, on top of that the 4-4 goal. He still made some nice saves as well. I'd think we'd have to go with him the rest of the way now. Norrena's confidence is probably pretty much shattered already, but Bäckström still seemed to have some confidence in himself.

Again, our 1st line was unbelievably cra**y! Kallio as the 13th forward, and put J. Jokinen as the other winger. He was definetely our best player today. As he has been earlier as well, even with the lesser ice time he's had.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the ref was horrible... Though not as bad as in USA-Latvia

Jeez, Team USA's coaching staff really has their work cut out for them. Some things just aren't clicking. We should never have blown the game like that when we were up 3-1! I didn't see the game, but I've read enough to figure out what's going on. This is what I think they ought to do:

1.) Put Tim Thomas in goal. The other two are playing horrible. In today's feature, Ty Conklin played the part of the Swedish Bill Buckner, Tommy Salo, and Jarkko Ruutu starred as the unlikely Belorussian hero, Vladimir Kopat.

2.) Shake up the lines. Mike Modano is not the player he used to be, and he's just making any magic playing with Cole and Knuble. Weight is playing well enough where you can put anyone on his line and he'll make them look good. So maybe Laviolette should put Parrish with Modano?

3.) Time to give the kids a chance. Mike York hasn't done crap, so bench him and put Parise in his place. Shift Halpern over to the wing and put Zach in the middle. And then give little Suter a shot. Roach, Hauer, and Liles seem to be playing well, so scratch Martin and put Suter in for a game to see how he does. Why the heck not?

Tim Thomas? I don't know about that. As a Bruins fan, I love the guy, but I don't think he's better than DiPietro or Conklin. Besides, there's no way he'll get the nod. It's great that he got some recognition by being named to the team, but he's never been seen by U.S. teams as anything but a backup. He'd probably do a fine job, but it would be a HUGE risk for the U.S. to put him in net to start. If he played poorly, U.S. coaching staff would never hear the end of it.

Man, I'd love it to happen, but I just don't see it.

Well, for starters, Suter and Parise have not been added to the roster yet, and there is only one spot left. The 2nd one could only be added in the event of an injury, and the injured player cannot be reinstated in the tournament.
Frankly, I don't think Suter and Parise will do any better than the guys the Americans are using already.

Suter and Parise, as stated above and proven with a couple of articles, ARE on the roster, but not officially "dressed."

I agree, Tim Thomas should get a chance to prove himself. But please, how can you even compare Kopat's weak shot that was helped by Salo's extremely strange behaviour to Ruutu's hell of a slapper right in the corner? Conklin was too deep , he should have moved towards Ruutu to cover more. IMO there's no comparison between the two incidents.
