There should be no name on empty netters. Especially like that.

If there were 15 game stars handed out, Kovalchuk wouldn't get any of them (prior to the empty netter)

I agree.

This game could have ended 2-2 or 7-2 for the Russians, and still the Austrians have reason to be proud. They did many things right in this game and showed a lot of skill, heart and team play.

The latter two had INDIVIDUAL highlight plays.

The first two did many little things right and controlled the tempo.

Good call.

But all four were deserving, IMO.

(NOT Kovalchuk or Ovechkin, despite the goal stats on the board)

agreed. setzinger has taken a leading role for austria. brückler was solid in net, but setzinger would have deserved it over him.

Well, every single russian player has nothing but individual play to show, so I pick Datsyuk because he was one of the few whose individual highlight plays actually created something. Concerning Austria, they played a great team game and every single player did those many little thing you talk about, including Setzinger. The individual play just put him above his teammates.

Couldn't agree more regarding Kovalchuk and Ovechkin
 
That game was crap! The Russians looked awful out there! Or maybe they're really playing like Dynamo against Spartak?

Setzinger made a fantastic play in the 3rd!!! :clap:

congrats to austria. they where really good today. i would say that the missing koch, pöck, vanek, bandner and divis really hurts.

i really liked the welser-koch-vanek and trattnig-setzinger-kalt lines. add brandner to this and we could have two offensivly nice lines. brückler did a great job i think divis is not much better when you consider his play in the league. overall we have something russia will never have it's just called heart. they really have tremendous talent but they will not win something with their way of playing hockey.

overall what i love to see is that austria is maturing and producing some talent. i look forward to monday and hope we beat belarus. so have a nice day folks.

CSKA, the only guy who has posted anger was you earlier (telling me to get lost!).

I want Russia to do well and am not impressed with the style of play. But I am far from upset. I'm a Canadian working on a South Korean island. I just love the game, regardless of the teams. I started out watching the Canada-Latvia game but when I checked into the Russian game I became impressed by the Austrians and was intrigued to see more.

You, as a Russian fan, and maybe Russian yourself, have all the reason to be concerned. That style of play will not win the tourney.

No glory in the win tonight.

Lessons to be learned.

raimund divis the forward scored a goal (and had a giveaway that led to kharitonovs goal)

reinhard divis the goalie from st louis blues is injured and didn't play.

btw, they are brothers, there's even a third divis, roland who is a defenseman in the second tier austrian league.

Brückler deserved the award for best austrian player, he held the team in the game in the first period singlehandedly with 18 saves. Not sure why you are saying the thrid goal was his seeing that the russian player got to shoot from 3 meters in front of him...

He played an awesome game as did Setzinger. But like so often the austrian team collapses in the last few minutes of a game against a big nation.
 
ovechkin and kovalchuk played really poor in my opinion. if ovechkin didn't missed the first shot he wouldn't have scored the goal. if there would be just this game i would say they are average players at their best. overall time will tell if austria played that strong (which i would say) or russia was that weak. my pediction is that the slovaks will win this group ahead of russia and hopefully austria.
