Again, the GM makes roster moves. Dubas can force Sullivan's hand.

Disagree with this team. Sullivan has ton of power and I honestly think Dubas still doesn't have full control yet. Sullivan was extend by FSG and has been there longer than the owners and GM.

I meant literally. All moves must be signed off by someone and submitted to the NHL central office to ensure cap compliance and other legal things.

No head coach has that power. That lies with the GM or President of Hockey Ops.

Who do you think they ask before they make these moves?

Do you think they would truly handwave what the ~decade-tenured HC wants and do their own thing?

Hmmm.

Ok but you dont think Dubas asks Sullivan who he wants called up? Dubas isnt just going to call up who ever he wants. He will ask sully what player he wants from WBS then make the move.

No, actually, I don't. It's a collaboration with Dubas meeting with Sullivan to discuss lineup holes and Dubas offering potential fits. Same with Hextall and Rutherford. Sullivan - and most coaches - doesn't have the time to focus on the ins and outs of who is doing what in the AHL. Sullivan has outright said that with some of the newer acquisitions.

The way I understand it is the GM and coach meet regularly to discuss the lineup. Who is playing well, who isn't, where there might be a hole, etc.

If Sullivan says he needs some grit and PK help, it's Dubas' job to bring him up to speed and say this guy is playing well in WBS or this guy is struggling.

It's also Dubas' job to push back when warranted. If Sullivan mistakenly keeps pushing for grit when Dubas thinks there should be more offense, Dubas can say, "Well, our best guy right now is John Doe. He's consistently scoring, playing all situations, playing well off the puck. He's by far the most deserving. You could do X, Y and Z to fit him in...."

Sullivan surely gets reports on WBS performance, but coaches don't have the time to get in depth analysis like the GM does.

Well I disagree. I think Sullivan has much more power than this. He can also just overlook who is doing well and say I want White. White wasn't even doing particular good when he was called up.

Just look at the Icetime. What did White do to be jumped up to second line and get added icetime.

I agree they are constantly meeting but that doesnt mean Dubas isn't deferring to Sully.

Gordie Howe hat trick for Poulin, with the bloody cheek to prove it. Took an instigator for starting the fight after Zohorna was leveled with a questionable hit.

I think you have to reward Poulin with a call up. What’s even the point if you don’t give him a handful of games. It’s not like our forward group is healthy or our bottom 6 is any good.

Just scored the game winner to. Having a great season down there and has been super hot lately

I don't think that's remotely true. The GM asks the coach who then speaks to the AHL coach for who the next man up is and they go by that. Dubas doesn't just call up anyone unless the coach says yeah I need so and so. I think it's been mentioned before that Sullivan has a lot of discussions with the AHL and the GM for who is up next.

There are times a GM may force a coach to call up a player but in the end it's the coach that knows what he needs and discusses it with the coach in the ahl to discuss who is ready and who can do what he needs. Even this Colin White recall, going by Sullivan talking about him, that's a choice he made.

Also did you forget this nugget?

This proves to everyone that FSG has a hard on for Sullivan and the power he holds is ridiculous. It's why I think even if FSG took over officially blah blah blah, they had say in a lot already and the narrative to keep pumping Sully to the media is not a shock for those of us that felt there was some bs going on with how high in regard they had this tool.

Sullivan is essentially the defacto GM of WBS and you can't tell me otherwise.

Tim Benz might have been the only Pens media bloke to ever call out Sully for his usage of players from wbs.
