Lol, no he's not.

There's a reason Dallas let him go, when they had a suspect defense at best, and that's because he isn't any good.

There's a reason why Dallas fans were livid when he was signed to a 3 year deal.

There's a reason why, after Benn's initial hot streak after the trade, we saw all those negative things about Benn return to his game. That continued into the play-offs where he confirmed that he had turned back into a Pumpkin.

The fact we used an expansion draft protection slot on him is the icing on the ludicrous cake.

He's a bottom pairing, utility guy.

You do know he was hurt in the playoffs, and he even said so himself he was.

Dallas was a trainwreck defensively, but the fact our FO was able to identify Benn as a player is a credit to them.

Too soon to sound the trumpets IMO. We've seen a lot of players get traded at the deadline and put together a hot streak with their new team only to revert back to their old selves long-term. Benn wasn't too great in the playoffs either so I'm a little worried that midnight is striking and he's turning back into a pumpkin. Happy to be proven wrong though.

(Wow I wrote all that before I even saw the quoted post from WTK above, down to the pumpkin analogy...that's crazy)

There was a reason the Flames let Byron go, doesn't mean it was bad to pick him up.

Sometimes players do better on their new teams than they did on their old teams and Benn is an example of that so far.

Who would you have protected instead? Emelin? I'll take Benn at 1.1 million over Emelin at 4.1 million.

No, but Byron isn't a 20 goal winger, either. Sometimes players have seasons, or stretches where they play over their head.

Byron is a valuable PK guy who can slot up and down the line-up. But he's not a top 6 forward and you're miscasting him if you're putting him there full time. He has speed and creates with his speed. I credit management for finding a guy who has a niche that he can play in the NHL.

Benn is another valuable PK guy, but he lacks the smarts and tools to be a top 4 defenseman. You're miscasting him if you put him there. If he was able to be one, he would've been one in Dallas where they desperately needed it and had tried multiple times before.

I would've protected Beaulieu. It's a no-brainer. Let them take Emelin or Benn, I don't care, at all. Then whoever is left, I keep them and not worry about signing Alzner to an atrocious contract that when you combine it with Shaws, you could have given to Radulov and instead of having two, ineffective players on long term deals with injury histories, and minimal impact on the ice.. You'd have one star player.

Beaulieu is pretty terrible. Worse than Benn. Its funny because you said that "Sometimes players have seasons, or stretches where they play over their head" and that us exactly how I would describe Beaulieu when he goes on a good stretch once every 3 months.

I disagree.

I think it's easy to say that a stay at home guy is better than a puck moving guy. Because when you have one player trying to make plays and fail, you see something that sticks in your brain more than watching a stay at home guy just fail to do anything noteworthy but without making a glaring mistake.

Trust me, I love when players make plays despite any risks. However, Beaulieu can't even make plays. Or makes them in an incredibly inconsistent basis.

Going to the game tonight!

Stoaked to see Ovi in the lineup :)

And Drouin of course!

Seeing the kids will be a BIG bonus.

since most of you are more interested in pining over 13th forwards and bottom pairing d from yesteryear I'll answer my own question.

Mete and Jerabek are in and are the points on the 2nd PP unit.

Those 2 and Hudon are the ones I'm most interested to see play tonight!

Due to lack of revenue from the playoffs, il y a moin de marge de manoeuvre. (...)

Wat?
I mean, the team will have made more money, because duh, but other than that... No. That's not exactly how it works.

(I'm not saying your wrong for the reminder of your message, that I omitted, but that wasn't my point).

Fair point, but the problem in the playoffs was that Benn was elevated to the 2nd pairing and was punching above his weight. He didn't all of a sudden start to play poorly, he played better competition and wasn't up to the task. He'll be a good on the 3rd pairing and PK, but we shouldn't expect him to be a top-4 dman.

Today's line-up is way better and more interesting that the one against Boston.
Should be fun.

If Drouin has an awful game, will people **** on him as much as Galchenyuk? Of course not! That being said, can't wait to watch him.

Are you kidding? There were some losers giving him the gears because of the scrimmage the other day, lol.

They were joking. Or at least I hope they were. Criticizing out best young skilled players when the season hasn't even started is quite odd.

Come on, Beaulieu had / has potential, but he's very inconsistent, and more importantly, his shot isn't NHL caliber in both velocity and accuracy, so this makes his offensive potential pretty average. He skates well and can carry the puck but other than that he's meh. Another swing and miss from TT. One thing I do know is that any NHL player that commits to improving his shot would practice plenty of hours and I don't think Beaulieu is the type of guy that would want to work out on his weaknesses much. I've heard in the media that he was pretty lazy in the training department, hence why he didn't improve and couldn't keep a high level of energy consistently. There are also reports of party habits, and bad influence for our kids because he seems cool and easy going, which when mixed with lotsa money and women tends to turn out bad. Glad this bum is out of the team environment.

Interesting lineup. Can't wait to see Drouin, Hemsky, Jerabek and Mete!

Mete and jerabek are definitely the ones to watch. Drouin and hemsky have roster spots locked up, so I'll wait for the regular season to be really interested in their play.

Edit: I just noticed that Hudon is playing too. He is another one to keep an eye on. Scherbak too. Overall, this is a much more interesting pre season lineup than game 1.

Even though this is just pre-season, it's still Drouin's first game infront of the home crowd. I expect him to put in some kind of effort and try to impress the fans. Hudon too. This is his last year to make the team. Scherbie has much to prove still. Either way should be a much better and more exciting game than the last one.

That's already alot more than most of our current D.

His offensive contribution was underrated and he provided a different game. Which we are now in need of.
