It's more about where the Sharks are in the rebuild right now. If this was the early 2010s and we had Jumbo, Pavs and Boyle leading the way then sure go ahead and bring in a guy or two with less than perfect professionalism in the hopes that the leadership group can whip them into shape. This team is built around teenagers so we need to be much more selective with who is kept around long term. It was never going to make any sense to extend Walman IMO.

This is a far more reasonable take than “he plays video games”

2nd that becomes a 1st if they make the finals + Sam O’Reilly? Or something?

A prospect and a 1st seems absolutely insane for Walman, no?

Based on the way that people are talking the 1st I think the "condition" will be something more like top-10 protection in 2026.

And based on the way people are talking about the prospect I suspect it will be a nobody. But who knows.

A Oiler 2026 first round pick won't play for the sharks until 2028, meanwhile they lose a capable Dman, Does anyone think GMMG can find a Jake Walman replacement in the UFA market when 31 other teams have extra cap space? this looks foolish.

And yes, getting a 1st for a cap dump on paper looks quite smart, For other teams that have depth, or should the sharks just tell everyone, fans, media, team- its another season of suffering but its going to be wizbang awesome in 2030

No idea yet but I'm hoping for a 2026 1st that moves to 2027 if the Oilers miss the playoffs or something and then some throwaway prospect like Philip Kemp.

It better be the equivalent of two 1sts (a first and a top prospect or better). Walman, as a rental would be a first minimum. 23 mins/gm, -1 on a terrible team eating big minutes. 42 pt pace? These are top pairing D type numbers at a bottom pairing cap hit. Thats gotta be two firsts equivalent.

However, Edmonton lacks a 1st this year and a 2026 late 1st is not worth much given the stage of rebuild. This summer's picks are really the last ones likely to be main parts of the next sharks generation. A 2026 late first likely doesn't hit the NHL until 2030 (age 22), and a late 1st has a less than 50/50 chance of hitting anyways.

I don't see how Edmonton can make an offer worth taking? Even a 2026 1st and Orielly aint such a great deal.

Also, without walman and ferraro, who is gunna play D? Mukh, Thrun, Thompson, Vlasic, Liljgren, Desharnais??? HAHAHAHAHA!!! that could be the worst defense ever assembled in NHL history.

A 1st for Walman is pretty good considering we got paid to acquire him for some reason.
i think what it took to get him is irrelevant to his current value. The guy is a top pairing D singed for another year at bottom pairing price. No way he should go for just a first. That would be an amazing steal for the other team.

Draft picks are assets and assets can get you d-men better than Walman (2025 edition) in trades.

I think you’re vastly overrating Walman based on points alone. He’s been brutal for the last 20 games. Considering we got paid to take him, we were pretty much given a 1st rounder and a 2nd rounder for free. Pretty good GMing

Yeah, because the thing about that 1st round is once you acquire it, you HAVE to keep it.

This is the situation - Walman probably wasn't going to be in the club when they're ready to compete, so they've got inflated value for him. That pick can be used in other deals - whether to move up higher in the draft or to acquire players from other clubs. You know, kind of like how they gave a 1st to acquire Askarov...

One problem we're going to have shipping out our only competent warm bodies on D is not simply that we're going to be even more awful (which we are), but that next year and the year after when we have guys like Dickinson and hopefully Schaefer is that they're not gonna have competent veteran D partners available to mentor them. I'm nervous about our ability to get decent veteran dmen on the UFA market without horrific overpayments, which might not be the best thing for the development of our talent in the pipeline.
