I've been extremely high on Rantanen even before he was drafted. Should have gone far higher than he did (#6 at latest). The only ones with clear edge over him are obviously McDavid, Eichel and maybe Hanifin and Provorov. Between Marner and Strome, anyone of the three could end up being the best player. He's just a force with that skating, size and the skill. Basically a handout from the Sharks to the Avs, a bit like Columbus giving up JP to Oilers. The only thing that worries me is Roy. Rantanen wasn't really given a chance on his tryout last season. A few games with 4th line minutes. Apparently Roy has tendencies to play the guys he likes the most as opposed to creating the most logical and fitting line ups. Anyway I could be wrong about that. Certainly hope so. He just seems like an extremely unpredictable coach.

The kid could contend for Calder when all is said and done.

My thoughts exactly! Some complain about Rantanen lacking a "killer instinct" but every other person knows that you can't score 60 in the AHL without it and have C and A on your chest at u20 and in liiga... I think Colorado counts on him very much

I have to say that I agree with this post pretty much. To me Rantanen has been a pretty much overrated Finnish prospect. A bit in the similar way as Barkov to some extent. Don't take me wrong though, as both are magnificent prospects, and I definitely do see Barkov as one of the players in the best tier of the young and promising Finnish players. And Rantanen is definitely a tier lower, although a good prospect definitely too. But I don't see him very special still. He has size and pretty good hockey IQ, but he has pretty abysmal shot for that size of a player and he also lacks way too much drive and a killer instinct in his game.

It's a bit hard to explain, but some players have this real killer instinct, and from the best Finnish prospects I see that Laine, Aho and most probably Puljujärvi have it. Barkov seems to lack some of it in a similar way that Rantanen does, but Barkov compensates it still with his very complete and high skillset in general.

I just really don't see that Rantanen will ever become a player that will score at least more than about 50 points in the NHL. But of course that would already mean that he would be a pretty darn good NHL player, if he would ever get 50 points.

What a load of crap. Abysmal shot? Like what are you on about? Lack of drive? He's one of the hardest working players I ever watched in an Avs jersey. Lack of killer instinct? Watch the damn highlights posted here, it takes a handful of minutes and it would prevent you from making such asinine claims. Why post about a topic you're completely oblivious about?

Kid has a high ceilng as any player I have seen come up lately. He will be good, very good

Mikko Rantanen vs Vincent Trocheck

I know Trocheck isn't a prospect and Rantanen is borderline so I hope it's okay to post this here.

Just wondering how you see both shaping up in the NHL after a few seasons and what their ceilings might be. Their respective teams are quite high on each one but what do those who have seen them play have to say about their actual potential?

Inquiring minds want to know.

You mean your mind wants to know.

They will both be good at different aspects of the game. Not really a similar player in any regard other than they are both forwards.

I know you are just asking the question but this is a strange comparison. Rantanen has the higher ceiling, he's an elite talent.

I feel like Rantanen probably has the higher ceiling but I'd be damn happy if rantanen develops as well as Trochek

Playing his second game of the year today. Got an assist in his first game with the Rampage, but this appears to be a short trip til he gets in better shape coming off an injury, while picking up some of the Avs new system (Bednar said they are playing the same system across levels).

Surprised he hasn't been talked about since July.

He's an Avs prospect, they don't get talked about much around here. You can see all the action in the Jost thread too.

I think he looks ready whenever they want to call him up. I don't think he's going to get a whole lot out of the system in the AHL.

Him and Jost are the future and I think they are gonna dominate in the next 5 years

Rantanen is the type of player every team should dream of having. He's big, strong and smooth on his skates, extremely intelligent, highly skilled, relentless hard worker - he's the total package.

Would it be far off to call him Hossa-esque? Whether or not he reaches that level remains to be seen. Nonetheless, this is a very exciting hockey player.

Hope he'll be called up this week, I'd love to watch his games. He looked great even with the very limited minutes at WCH, he should have a great season.

Jen doesn't have and likely never will have anywhere near the talent but the guy I see every time he has the puck on his stick is Jagr.

Excited to see what he can do under a proper coach and good linemates. Do avs fans know if he will play center or wing. It's only been 5 games so his ROY chances won't be too hurt if he can start of hot.

That's a great question, we'll know more when we see the lines in practice tomorrow. He played center in San Antonio (per request, not out of need) but wing depth in Colorado is desperately thin. If he plays top 6 it's certainly on wing but they might start him out at 3C is my guess.

Advice: The 19-year-old was the 10th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He played in nine games with the Avs last season, but didn't record a point. He had a ton of success at the AHL level, as he scored 24 goals and 60 points in 52 games. The Avalanche have already said that he'll have a top-six role with the club. - Yahoo sports

I'd like to see him play with Mackinnon and see what magic they can produce

I'll admit I don't know him enough but is he a grinder who will dish the puck out front/battle in front of net kind of guy, or more of a possession guy? Does he like to shoot or look for the pass?

I would stick him where he has good linemates for his play style. For example if he's a shooter, stick on the wing of one of the C's or whatever. I won't be able to catch his first game but I plan on watching his next if he stays up.

I would say he is the definition of an all around player. Reminds me of players like Kopitar, Wheeler and Voracek. A hard worker, good skater, can dish the puck, can shoot it. Great in board battles. What his role ends up being in the NHL remains to be seen, but I'm thinking he'll be a work horse player and a set up man first, finisher second. Him and MacKinnon could compelement each other nicely in the long run.

He's a playmaker first. His biggest attributes are his hockey sense, puck protection using his big frame. He's not a bruiser but will go to tough areas. He's got a sneaky good shot and power in his game but I think where he'll show up first in the NHL is setting other people up. MacKinnon works well with that type of player, I'd like to see that too.

I've only watched a few games of his but the games I have watched (1 nhl game and a few ahl) he looks very calm and confident with the puck.
