Praises coming from another Q team reporter :

An indestructible beast. I will be curious to know his real state of health after the Memorial Cup tournament. There aren't many tougher ones than him.

We already have la bête sans cage in Levi. Now adding la bête increvable in Komarov. Donnez-moi toutes les bêtes!

Another Twitter comment, "Those who hit him hurt themselves more than him It is made of reinforced concrete! A rock!"

I still think it's going to come out that his knee is going to require some work after the season is over. He's a tank out there though even if he's limping a bit.

If that's true, and I don't doubt it, does signing him make it so his surgery is covered / conducted by the Sabres team surgeons instead of the Junior team?

If that is the case it adds on another reason to sign him now.

I don't know about that - as the drafting team, they may have had input on it too but I'm not sure how much. The way his leg bent and then he hasn't missed a game since... so much moxie.

I don't know if the problem was the knee or his hip?

The NHL teams definitely have a say in this, maybe more when prospects are signed.

As an example, the Gatineau Olympiques lost Noah Warren for the playoffs after Anaheim decided he would get his shoulder surgery in March so he could be ready for the next camp. He could have played anyway and have the surgery after the playoffs.

Just because we didn’t have to sign him yet - and he was a 5th round pick. He can’t play in Rochester next year so our org doesn’t gain anything by getting him under contract now vs next year. There are valid points to signing him now as @HOOats mentioned. I also didn’t say it was a bad thing, just noting that KA is aggressive signing these guys early. I’m not predicting anything bad with this player - but it’s becoming a trend with KA. It could backfire, it might not.

I'm not saying that's how it happened but he could have signed a deal in the KHL tomorrow and the Sabres wouldn't have had a say. Seeing how young Russian prospects are signing multiple years deals in the KHL these days, Buffalo might have wanted to make sure it didn't happen with Komarov. Now that he has a NHL contract, KHL teams can't sign him.

His uncle plays in the KHL btw. Viktor Komarov at eliteprospects.com

Might it be a hip pointer? That was what befell Thompson toward the end of this season. Hopefully it isn't a labrum.

Patrick Roy says he had to sell him a lot to NHL scouts last year. There wasn't much interest for him.

The work of Vsevolod Komarov rewarded by the Sabres
By Mikael Lalancette

The 2023 Memorial Cup tournament hasn't even started yet, in Kamloops, that Vsevolod Komarov is already all smiles. Thursday morning, the defender of the Remparts was granted an Entry level contract by the Buffalo Sabres, news that comes at the right time 24 hours before the start of the competition.

It was Komarov's agent who told him the good news by Zoom, a call his parents were on from Russia. "They're really proud of me, he said with a smile. Very happy too!"

The announcement of Komarov's signing spread like wildfire Thursday morning around the Quebec Remparts' locker room at the Sandman Center in Kamloops. His Remparts teammates greeted the official announcement with cries of joy, a reaction that pleased the new Buffalo Sabres.

"I'm really happy and excited, it's every player's dream, but now it's time to focus on the tournament," reacted the Russian defenseman, always humble when it comes to talking about his success.

Roy predicted it

His head coach Patrick Roy, who has seen him progress at high speed in recent months, is not surprised. He had to work hard behind the scenes to convince professional scouts to take an interest in the right-handed defenseman.

“Last year, I was trying to sell him to everyone", Roy recalled.

“I don't know why, but it was hard to sell him. Today, Buffalo is so happy with him, their scouts love his progress. His ceiling is so high, he doesn't have beard yet, he will still get bigger and stronger physically. That's quite a pick from the Sabres!"

The Remparts head coach, who has learned a few words of Russian over the years, has been able to build a "bridge" between the club and the Sabres' 2022 5th round pick, whose english has improved a lot in the last months.

“When I aske him if he understood and he says no, we start over,” explains Roy. These few words of Russian allowed an easier approach. "The good things that happen to him are all thanks to him, he gets on the ice, he plays big minutes, he worked hard with [the coach responsible for defensemen] Benoit Desrosiers. They connected really well together."

Work, the key

Komarov's recipe is very simple. It's not what he eats or what he drinks that has allowed him to rise as one of the best defenders in the QMJHL, but rather the work. He admits that he would never have thought of living all of this when he left Chelyabinsk two years ago.

“It was a big step for me to come and play here in Canada, he recalled, still excited with the emotions he had just experienced. It wasn't easy, leaving my family, but now that it's behind me, I'm so happy with what happens to me."

A difficult context

The “commitment” of the 19-year-old young man was exemplary, believes Patrick Roy. All this in the very difficult context of the armed conflict that is tearing Ukraine and Russia apart, a war that continues to claim victims.

“The conditions are not necessarily easy at the moment, but he has adapted well. He fits in amazingly with the group, he hangs out with the same group of players, and you see how much the guys love and appreciate him", says Patrick Roy.

Not finished yet

His admirers are numerous pm Quebec's team. Turning his back on the media after his interview, the Russian was quickly embraced by his coach, who congratulated him for everything he had accomplished so far.

Patrick Roy knows very well that he will need a Komarov in great shape, Friday night, in the opener of the tournament against the host team of the Memorial Cup, the Kamloops Blazers.

If the Buffalo Sabers prospect keeps the same confidence as the last few months on Friday, Monday and Tuesday nights, Quebec could be in a good position for the final round of the tournament…

KA seems quite aggressive getting recent draft picks signed. I wonder if this is in part due to blunders from prior GMs with both NCAA players and/or Hagel. Really no reason to sign him now vs next offseason, but we’re not near the contract limit so it shouldn’t matter.

I doubt Hagel would have anything to do with these signings. He wasn't signed for two reasons: he didn't progress much his D+1 or D+2 season, and they were up against the contract limit at the time.

Appreciate your input throughout. Has he been able to improve that first step and burst?

This kid just became my all-time favorite Sabres prospect. And I write that knowing me may never play an NHL minute.
What potential.
If I had any say over it, I'd tell VK to prepare for a summer in Buffalo where he will work on his skating. Intense work. I'd show him video of how Jeff Skinner uses his edges and work with VK to develop those skills.
If his skating can catch up to the rest of him when he's 22-24 years old, the Sabres will have an NHL RHD on their hands.

If you have NHL Network, they have the TSN MemCup feed tonight. He just assisted on Quebec's second goal, just getting it on net that allowed for the deflection.

Oh. Thanks. I didn’t even think to look for it. I knew there was no NHL tonight and never even thought about it

Providing the beefy net-front screen on the PP, Rochette makes it 4-1. That's one of the more interesting parts of his year in Quebec - Roy uses him as the net front guy at times on the first powerplay.

I thought the 3rd Kamloops goal was a high stick. VK had his man boxed out pretty well.

And Gaudet scores a shortie to make it 6-3.
