hmm, no fans but doubt that’s a bubble tournament. We’re all hoping

There were fans. I think only three teams announced that they won’t let fans into arenas. Requirement is six feet (1.5 meters actually) so they sell only every other seat unless sold to families.

BTW, Traktor was missing quite a few players and remember I mentioned that there was a report where Traktor had 5 covid positives during preseason.

3020 people in attendance.

Thank you - Five is a very nice number. I think we’re all past speculating what the heck is going on? Thought this virus spread like wildfire.

Hoping the change of seasons doesn’t mutate this virus into something it was or what we thought it was. Stay tuned

I like Kravtsov, just want to be clear about that. I just didn’t see anything particularly special here. I want to see that kid controlling games at the KHL level before I get re-excited about what he might do when he comes back over here.

Seemed like he was controlling the game every shift.

Not sure what clip you were watching, but he exhibited everything you want to see out of a top prospect there.

He plays like that all year, the results will surely be there, but even if they do not show up, he's still a damn good prospect. Small sample size, but he looked damn impressive in that clip

That’s why I asked what more you’d like to see cause this is what he was doing. I saw a lot of less dipsy doodles which is what I’m sure they were teaching him in Hartford - more straight forward, directly to the goal front plays.

Yeah, I dunno. The second clip is good. The rest of it just looks like pretty standard breakouts that generated relatively non dangerous perimeter shots. This looks just looks like things that happen in any given game to me - nothing really standing out.

I'm not trying to sound down on the kid or rain on anyone's parade, but until I can see him adapt his game to a more North American play style, I will have reservations about him. I mean I'm hopeful he can do it, and he definitely has talent. It's just I've seen him be a very effective player in the KHL before. It's like Lias--we know he can be a good player in the SHL. The concern is whether he can do it here.

Hopefully it all works out. Would hate to whiff on both Lias and Kravtsov.

I think you mean "pretty standard breakouts" but with speed that backs up defenders that allows his team to possess through the neutral zone and enter the zone with possession. He and Chytil are both very good at using their speed in a way that positively influences zone entries and retaining control once they enter the zone instead of chipping/chasing. The best teams can do both.

As for creating dangerous shots... well, i think you may have a point in terms of creating better chances off the rush. VK has the vision to be a playmaker, but the way he attacks with his speed often means he's far ahead of his fellow wingers. Certainly at these lower levels. I think he will need some work on what to do with the puck when he enters the zone with little support, how can he buy time for re-inforcements. Because, yes, if he sticks to a more perimeter style his game could end up resembling someone like Scott Gomez.

That said, between the end of his season in HFD and these highlights we can see VK becomng more assertive physically. He's going to some of those dirty areas and actually winning battles. Thats not an easy thing for these under 23 year olds to do consistently. VK is 6'3" and if fills out a bit more or just keeps developing his core and base strength he will be able to win these battles in the NHL as well without getting worn down. It's just a matter of being patient. And at 6'3" he's already more imposing than S. Gomez who really had to motor around traffic because he wasn't hugely effective in the dirty areas. In the long run VK should become what Scott Gomez was supposed to be but at 5'11" never was.

I would like to see VK work on his shot while at top speed. I think he gets much more on his shot from a set position than off the rush and I think he'll need to work on that to keep defenders and goalies more honest.

Finally, after watching highlights of Laf using his speed and fearlessness to get to the high scoring areas and knowing how Chytil likes to skate, attack the zone. I would love to one day see a line of VK, Chytil and Laf. That combo of size, speed and puck skills could be off-the-charts.

Probably a dumb question but the WJC he played in, was that NA ice?

I’m glad everyone here seems to be impressed with VK’s first game. Looks like an average game from an average player to me. I don’t think VK is just an average player, but I’m not blown away by what I saw in this reel either.

I'm confused.

I think his preseason highlights look better than what he did in the AHL and the recent KHL video.
I was trying to make the case for the same last week

Yes they were highlights but the video I found on youtube, he just kept finding the open man and producing scoring chances like a pro.
I think he knew it too and it screwed with his confidence that he didnt make the team. Hence the VHL demotion. It wasnt his play. It's how he was handled by management.
Hopefully hes resilient and burst through that chapter and can come back even better

Let the kid mature a little longer. The skills and size are there. He has the stuff you can’t teach, but he has to get better at the things you can. Ultimately they would love him to be the heir apparent for 2RW. Top 6 of

Lafreniere Zibanejad Kakko
Panarin Chytil/trade Kravtsov
is very formidable. Interchange whatever way you want but the is good size and a lot of skill in that top 6 for years to come

i thought there were some positives to take away...the strip early was PURE, then the next clip blocking the shot and controlling the pick off of that was impressive. he definitely competed on pucks and won battles on the boards...so i thought the effort was there and some of those plays showed some real skill/hockey iq. but offensively sure there was nothing to "wow". You could see the smooth handles and pace though and he didn't make any bad plays. but its one game...if he had put up a hatty with a highlight reel goal people would be putting him on our first line, maybe in the hall of fame. its interesting to analyze and discuss with not much else going on, but one game means nothing in the grand scheme no matter how good or bad...more interested in seeing the picture being painted over a period of time to have any conviction in assessing where he's at

Exactly.

And the thing is, those are the attributes he needed to show. We've all seen the behind the back dipsy-dos; we already know he can execute those. It's the 90-95% of the game where he needs to fit in the flow where we needed to see him make more of a difference – and, at least for one game, he did.

He's maturing and growing and evolving his game especially now with a taste of NA hockey.

This isn't the mid-late 80s where he doesn't know the language and has never been to NY. He's also tight with kids in the org like K. Miller. He knows what's up and what he needs to work on. Patience.

Yeah, I can see how that sentence can be confusing. All I'm saying is that I don't really see anything in that clip to get excited over, but I also want to make sure that isn't interpreted as me thinking that VK is bust.

We all have very high hopes for this kid. I am trying to be objective.
The thing that I saw and liked was his engagement in the play. He was more physical than what I saw last year. I agree with being objective, and there is a long road ahead, but he was going after the puck and using his body for positioning. Those are positives, but it is still early. Let's see if he continues and produces offense while doing so. Regardless, they are steps in the right direction as opposed to regression.

Really liked what I saw. That pass from behind the net was impressive. Could have picked up two assists in that clip. I think in general people's expectations are skewed by some of the 18 year old rookies coming into the league and producing immediately. Lot of people were super excited after his 2018-19 season with Traktor and when he came over and didn't make the team out of camp and then left Hartford the hype evaporated. I was anticipating him challenging for a spot next season particularly if Buchnevich is moved, but am also content with him playing out the year with Traktor and bringing him over immediately after. Let him marinate... he's become a bit of a forgotten man on these boards considering how much talent we have added to the pipeline, but is still an extremely important piece moving forward.

I cant smash the like button enough about the expectations people have of 18 yr olds in the league.

The McDavid, Barzal, Matthews, Laine type of immediate impact is the exception not the norm.

Traktor is playing its send game. After the first period 1:0 for, goal scored Kalinin on 5-on-3 PP. Same as last game Kravtsov is RW on the second line and 1PP (right board). One thing I wanted to note: there was a face-off in KunLun zone left circle and Kravtsov and Kalinin switched sided for a chance of one timer off the draw. Doesn’t mean Kravtsov is playing LW.
