This is a great thread and has giving me some fantastic options for my visit to the Twin Cities next week.

Was curious where are the best bottle shops to buy some local beers to bring back home or if the local supermarkets carry a decent selection.

Don't go to a supermarket looking for alcohol

No booze in supermarkets, only at liquor stores. And you can't buy alcohol on Sundays here.

Some good local beers (that are widely available in almost every liquor store) are Surly, Summit, and Fulton.

What are you doing on your trip here? :)

This was some of the weirdest things I experienced coming back from being in exile. Not the "not on Sundays" Indiana was during college, Michigan was nothing until after 12, but you could buy them both in supermarkets (wine too, and liquor). Also, you could go to a bloody bar and drink.

Here, it's what? Anything under 4? or something for supermarkets?

For as "blue" and supposedly "progressive" as this state is, it's puritanical when it comes to beer.

Go to any decent liquor store and load up on make-your-own sixers (and I'd advise a case of Nordeast if you are drinking to drink).

Any place I've been to here (and I have my spot, which I call "Brent Burns" because he used to go there) will have a staff and you should be able to say "I'm not from here, what are your thoughts on must haves, stay away from, recommendations etc".

Then mention hockey and you may get into a 5 hour conversation.

I hope that $725/month for a 1BR in Prospect Park isn't a ripoff, although, to be fair, the corner of Prospect Park where I got a lease isn't exactly close to campus.

Then again, my parents are wondering what makes Ski-U-Mah so important to Minnesota; for my parents, Ski-U-Mah is a parking lot. They think the Ski-U-Mah parking lot gained its name in an university-wide naming contest.

They find it hard to believe that a university would be so proud of a parking lot that its name would appear in yellow on the left sleeve of a Minnesota long-sleeved shirt (and on select other pieces of Minnesota merchandise)...

The slogan is well over 100 years old, and is in multiple school songs and chants.

Very helpful...thanks!

My daughter is doing a tour and interview at St Olaf's in Northfield.

We got in last night after visiting family in Illinois and took a detour to Hammerheart Brewing in Lino Lakes. Will hit the Twin Cities tonight and tomorrow before heading down to St Louis. Surly is on my list to visit.

How long are you going to be in Minnesota? You might want to look into a hotel in a surrounding suburb if you have a car or other vehicle. Some place like Edina is still a short drive from Minneapolis, with a lot of restaurants and stores, including a mall, in Edina as well.

If you want to stay in downtown Minneapolis or St. Paul, then someone else is probably more qualified to help you. North Minneapolis can be pretty bad, but most of the city is fine. I've never had any troubles.

Yeah, like AKL said, just avoid North Minneapolis. Cedar-Riverside (on the south side of Minneapolis) is also a little sketchy.

If you're staying in downtown, you'll be just fine.

But yeah, if you're just staying for the night, and it's more of a pit stop where you're just looking for a bed for the night, just get a hotel in the suburbs somewhere.

Oh I didn't even read the whole post where you said one night. Oops.

If you don't plan on seeing the sights too much I'd still recommend a hotel in Edina or Maple Grove or another suburb.

Why would you even cut all the way down to the Cities? Stay in Duluth and drive across northern Wisconsin and Michigan. Make the most of it.

A place.
Stop off around the Detroit Lakes area and enjoy some swimming and mini-golf and tubing down a river.

Don't forget your sunblock!

Probably figures he can make the best time by using the interstate highway system.

And probably easier to refuel and eat along the southern road (vs. the northern road that avoids the border entirely)...

How is parking at TCF Bank Stadium? Visiting Minneapolis this weekend and may head to the Vikings preseason game.

Several parking ramps are good choices. I'd say the Oak Street Ramp is best. But there is also the Washington Ave. ramp, and the 4th St. ramp. If you get there early, you will have no trouble getting into one of those. Each of those ramps are like a 2-4 block walk to the stadium.

Worst case scenario (which shouldn't be a problem unless you're getting there like shortly before kickoff). Head to Dinkytown and start looking for street parking.
