Visiting LA? Where to go? What to do? Ask here

I'm pretty sure both teams practice at Toyota Sports Center.

That's probably mostly due to who the opponent was. If it were Vancouver, San Jose, Anaheim or even Detroit, people would've probably been saying stuff back.

Yup. The Peg is thoroughly irrelevant, so seeing a few of their fans inside is a bit of a novelty.

What to do in DTLA on a saturday morning

Ok We are flying into SNA airport Jan 9 2015 for the jets/kings game on Saturday Jan 10th and then going to the teemu night in Anaheim on the sunday jan 11 then staying at the Ayers hotel next to honda center then boarding a plane on monday Jan 12 at 8 am for our flight back to Winnipeg. My question is we should be at our hotel friday around 3-4 pm as our plane lands in SNA at 12;30 PM. We are staying at the Residence DTLA close to Staples center. I need some ideas what we can do on the Friday evening that is easy to get to. We were thinking heading up to hollywood Blvd and walk around for awhile. Then on the Saturday as I will be use to getting up 2 hrs earlier then the locals we need some ideas on what to do . We will be up and ready to go by 5 am local LA time as It is like &am my time so we were thinking of driving to one of the beach areas of LA. Also my friend wants to drive by the playboy mansion just to say we have been there. We want to be back in DTLA by around 2 PM to get ready for the pre game parting around the Staples center and also we dont want to be stuck on a freeway getting to late . We have a car rented. On the sunday we were thinking of getting up real early again but need some ideas what we can do for 4-5 hours si=unday before we need to head to Anaheim for the game sunday night. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I know there are 2 basketball games at the staples while we are there but we aint basketball fans enough to spend money on going to a game. Also we have bought our tickets to the Anaheim game but not the LA kings game yet. There are 3000 on stub hub and prices are pretty high yet for the lower level tickets from $100 and up.will the price start to drop closer the the game in January in the lower level ?? i can't see my jets being a big draw in southern California ?? We have never been to California before.. Thanks in advance for all info.

From the Residence it is an easy walk to the Red Line. You can take that to Hollywood and Highland. Or do what locals do and drive (esp at night) parking ain't cheap though. There are plenty of weirdos there but fairly safe even at night, but if you want weirdo central hit Venice Beach in the daytime. Cannot stress that enough.
In Orange County hit Newport peninsula. Most the Ducks players live near there. It might be dead because it will be what we think of as cold, but google the wedge check it out.
Since I assume you will have a car, the drive from LA to south Orange County on PCH is a good drive, if you have a bunch of time.
Find an In-N-Out for lunch one day. If you are in SoCal Mexican food and In-N-Out are required.

As far as before the game LA Live is a good place to be. For breakfast that day I suggest the Pantry. Walking distance from Residence and a local landmark.

I don't think the public can drive by the Playboy mansion. i really have no info on that but I'm almost certain that anyone who visits there has to park at the bottom of a hill and then be shuttled up there. Try googling it and see what you find.

As far as things to do in the morning, you could try hiking to the Hollywood sign and going to Griffith Park. Our air quality is much better in the winter time so you'll probably get a pretty good view then if its sunny.

As far as beaches go, Venice is great to people watch and buy tourist junk. For quality beaches in LA, I'd recommend Manhattan/Hermosa which are just south of Venice by about 5 miles.

In OC, the Wedge (as onlyalad suggested) is great when the waves are up. The surf can get 30 feet there and there are crazy people that will actually surf it. Watch some videos on youtube. Huntington and Newport both have cool piers to visit.

You might try having brunch Sunday morning at Las Brisas in Laguna Beach. There is an incredible view there. Make a reservation.

Six Flags Magic Mountain deals?

Hi there,

Sorry for the OT thread - mods, feel free to move/merge if needed.

I'm looking for a good price on passes to Six Flags Magic Mountain in the Los Angeles area on Sunday Nov 9. Any suggestions?

Online advance purchases via their website (sixflags.com) passes are $49.99.

Visit California offers a $20 discount on passes, but must be presented at the ticket booth (where passes are $69.99), so that works out to the same price - $49.99.

I think there's a discount via AAA (to $36.99), but I can't log in to the AAA site to complete the purchase, so that doesn't work for me.

Can anyone beat $49.99 admission?

Goldstar sometimes gets them for 30.00 but it is hit or miss. eBay as well.

Hey guys, me and some friends are flying down from Winnipeg and spending some time in San Diego, and then we are planning on making the trip up to LA before flying from LAX back home . My question is what is the best way of getting from San Diego to LA from the people that have made that trip before? I know there is the Amtrax train, bus, or car rental (were all under 25 though) What would you guys say is the best option for a group of 4 or 5?

Also what is the best area to stay in for hotels? we would like to keep it somewhat affordable, and moderately close to LAX to avoid big taxi fees. Can anyone recommend a good area yet still affordable for us too look?

Amtrak will cost just under $40 a person from Old Town to LA, then you can take the subway close to LAX.
You can save about 10 a person on weekends by taking Amtrak to San Juan Capitrano and then taking Metrolink the rest ofthe way. It will take longer and there are limits on luggage.
I don't know what a car rental (one way) costs for guys under 25 but having a car is better if you are spending any time in either city.

Moving to LA

Moving to LA in January for a great job. We're going to be settling down in Westwood for the first year (see how it goes before exploring other neighborhoods).

Any tips on good hockey leagues to play in that won't take me 5 hours to get to (adult non-check)? I've been spoiled in the DC area where we have a good league (HNA) that is setup with 5 rinks in the area that are all within 30 minutes drive.

I've been told getting to Staples can take a long time, too, but I've more or less accepted the traffic situation. Let's hope tickets are reasonably attainable!

Staples should be a half hour drive from Westwood, maybe an hour on a really bad day

Toyota Sports Center, where the Kings practice have good leagues, Culver City does as well

The surfliner (Amtrak) between San Diego and LA is awesome. Totally worth the cost of admission (I think like $25). Sit on the left side of the train (when facing north - the direction it will be traveling) because you'll get awesome views of the coast line for half of the trip.

The best way (cheapest and quickest) to get to and from DTLA/LAX without a car is the Flyaway bus. This will pick up at Union Station in DTLA and drop you off at the terminals at LAX. I've already given detailed instructions on this in this thread so search this thread for more info.

The hotels near LAX aren't bad but you can probably find something for the same amount of money up in Marina Del Rey or down in Manhattam/Hermosa beach. Both are about 10-15 min drive to LAX. Use Uber/Lyft while you're out here. Both will save you money over using cabs. Avoid staying in cities near LAX like Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood and Lawndale.

Oh man, Culver City Rink is closed :( I guess they're trying to come up with a way to get a rink to open/develop somewhere else in West LA.

I'll have to check out Toyota Sports Center, looks like it shouldn't be too bad of a drive from Westwood.

Thanks for the info!

I have a buddy coming down to LA to see the Kings play the Flames on December 22. I've been to LA at least ten times myself and I remember seeing Clippers tickets for sale for $12 at Costco. Do the Kings run any kind of similar promotions? How hard is it to get tickets? He was telling me that he had been looking on Stubhub for a pair of tickets in the $150-200 range, but I told him that he'd be able to get tickets much cheaper than that on the day of the game. Am I way off base here? Any tips? Thanks.

Ian getting a little concerned for the Jan 10 game against the Jets. I have been watching stub hub for tickets and the prices are not dropping at all for that game . Approx 3000 tickets on stub hub and we are coming all the way from Winnipeg for the game and want to sit in the lower bowl. We are prepared to buy no matter what but thought the ticket prices for this game would drop. I can't see the Jets being a huge draw in LA so what's going on here you LA guys ?? Thanks and looking forward to LA/ Anaheim games.

From what I have heard, prices are not dropping on game day. Get tickets while you can

Buying tickets the day of the game is a gamble. In general, ticket prices don't typically go up. If it were the Red Wings, Blackhawks, TML or another team with a big following, I'd say that is possible. But the question is how much will they fall, if they do. They probably won't fall that much to warrant waiting. Especially if the game is a weekend night game.

There are no ticket sales anymore. The Kings sell enough tickets at face value where they don't need to do that anymore.
