Visiting LA? Where to go? What to do? Ask here

Every time I go I have driven around in a maddening crowd of pedestrians and cars desperately searching for decent $10 or $15 dollar parking, only to eventually settle on some horrible $15 lot... Then as I walk in past the $20 lots right across the street I get annoyed with myself for not just spending another $5.
So yeah, just head towards staples and grab the first $20 spot you see close to staples. These will get you real close and are plenty safe.

not exactly sure what safety concerns you have, I wouldn't think twice about parking on the Fig near Pico lot you mentioned with a kid...

Yeah unless you expect a full blown riot, the crowds are WAY too big for there to be much trouble, just huge crowds trying to cross streets, typically very safe and undramatic.

Yep, I live in Ontario so when I make that trip to a game, I just fork out $20 and be done with it. I'll be doing that tomorrow.

It's his nephew man. It's about keeping it easy and remember little legs.... A 10 minute walk for us is the never ending story to them

I get what your saying, but ease and comfort is not really the same as safety.... Just saying aside from the normal dangers of public and large crowds there isn't really a safety concern.

I'm going to the game tomorrow and going early. And thus I will park underground at LA Live. The feet I save may be my own.

Thanks guys!

Funny, all the years I've been going to Kings games, never had to thing about it. Generally go to the game alone or with a buddy, and where I part is never an issue.

Once kids are part of the equation, suddenly you think more about safety.

We beat the Rangers to death for you. Now give us your nephew!

PS - Sorry we couldn't do anything about Machinehead :sarcasm:

Got s pretty good deal for opening night. Lot C for $13 on Stubhub.

And Lot C is only five minutes away from the entrance on the west side which is crowd friendly.

Don't kill me if you guys get asked this a lot, but I'm taking my little nephew (only 9 YO) to his first King's game this coming weekend. I live in Toluca Lake and I usually just take the metro down to King's games (Redline to Expo Line). Sometimes when I am driving straight from work, I just park on the street somewhere on Fig (usually about a half mile away, near Pico). However, with the little guy in tow, I don't want to mess around at all. If you were bring a child to the game, what would make the most sense as far as parking is concerned?

Good to see you are atleast bringing your nephew up with a proper team:D

But really...part under LA live, you come up and will have a nice little crowd to see everyone in their jersey then walk across the street and you are there. Plus if you get there early you guys can get a beer;)

I always park on Hope/11th if I park in a lot. There is a $10 lot there and it is 2 blocks down 11th to get to Staples. When you leave you can go north on Hope and left on 8th street to get on the 110. I think a 9 year old can walk two blocks and you aren't going to be in any danger. There are businesses along the whole walking route.

There are also tons of street spots on Hope/Grand/Hill between Pico and Olympic.

I'm not so much worried about street crime, but with a little one you always worry about crossing streets, etc.

Personally, I'd rather just take the metro and not have to think about it at all. I'm smack dab in between the Universal city and NoHo redline stations, and its really easy to get downtown and then transfer to the Expo line. I have a monthly pass too, courtesy of my employer.

I'll be visiting Anaheim for a conference at the Disney resort hotels and want to attend the game Thursday. What are the best options for public transportation to/from the Staples Center? Should I plan on an expensive cab ride, or is there a train or something I can take?

You can take the metrolink there but it looks like you'd have to take Amtrak home (same track) but the last train leaves at 10:10 pm. You can take the train there and then cab it back or leave the game early to catch the 10:10 Amtrak train returning to Anaheim.

I'd recommend using Uber/Lyft over a cab because you'll save about half the price.

EDIT: From Union Station, you'll need to get on the red/purple line (subway) and take it 3 stops to the 7th Street/Metro Center station. Just walk south on Figueroa from there. You don't need to buy a ticket for the red/purple line. just make sure you have your metrolink ticket with you in case you get asked.

Thanks for the response.

Blues fan coming in peace. I just moved to Southern California and was wondering if you guys knew where the opposing teams(aka the Blues) have their practices at.

Then you should just take the red line. He'll probably get a kick out of riding the train and seeing a few trannies in the process.

First of all, want to thank you guys. Nephew and I had a great evening! It was expensive, but fun. I tend to stop off at games on the way home, and I brown bag my lunch. So, for me, the only expense is usually the game itself. By the time I got done buying the little fellow all the snacks, food, and the little souvenir puck he wanted - ouch!

In the end, we did take the Redline and he did OK with it. I was worried about it, but his mom assured me he was used to the trains in NY. The only problem we had was the infrequency of the redline trains at that hour. We had no trouble catching the Expo line to Metro Center, but then we had to wait like 15 minutes for the Redline and my poor little nephew nearly feel asleep.

On an aside, there were a slew of Winn Jets fans in the audience around me - very vocal too. What surprised me about the Staples Center was how nice everybody was to the fans of the opposing team (of course, it isn't a very heated rivalry). When I used to go to Washington Caps games in an Islander jersey, I would experience a lot of mistreatment

I'm pretty sure both teams practice at Toyota Sports Center.

That's probably mostly due to who the opponent was. If it were Vancouver, San Jose, Anaheim or even Detroit, people would've probably been saying stuff back.

just out of curiosity, where to ? LA , OC? SD?

I do like it so far, and I'm assuming I should just call them and see when they're gonna be there Thursday?

Yes, but since they're the road team, then might practice a little earlier than the Kings do. I notice that the Kings practice anywhere from 10AM to Noon at the latest. I think they usually let the road team practice right before they do.
