If Dunn were available this would be a smart move for Ottawa. Chabot and Dunn on the left side would be very solid for a long time and his age fits the team perfectly.

They could take Allen too but they'd have to move someone out I'd imagine, Nilsson and Hogberg are already there and Anderson is a question mark (unless I've missed something). I assume they could bring him back for a year if he wanted to play.

Blais would be of interest too as the right side could use a decent body in my opinion.

Sens have no shortage of picks and could probably give up a young player or two without being upset about it. Someone like Chlapik or Gustavsson. They could also offer Reilly to fill the space where Dunn was if it was needed.
Ottawa is another possible trade partner. They have a lot of picks and prospects. As you stated, the difficulty would be fitting in Allen. Quick question, is Logan Brown available, or is he on the untouchable list? I ask, because his father played In St. Louis, so he has ties with the city.

I wouldn't say Brown is available, but I wouldn't say he's unavailable either. Ottawa clearly needs a strong couple of centers to develop and depending on the outcome of the draft Brown could very possibly become a trade chip. So there's potential at least in my opinion.

Brown would only make sense if we also trade Bozak. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind him on the Blues, but at the moment we don't seem to have a spot for him and he really should be starting in the NHL next season. Same goes for Chlapik who I'm personally not a fan of (the Blues should know him well as he was Sammy Blais linemate at Charlottetown).

What prospects would be available from Ottawa's perspective to be included in a possible deal? Are guys like Pinto or Bernard-Docker available? You do seem to have quite some defensive prospects, maybe even one of Brannstrom or Thomson?

To be honest I couldn't see many prospects being available at all. Obviously the Ottawa situation is no secret and they've gone all in developing and rebuilding from the ground up.

That said, I believe I recently read that some of this year's picks could be used to fill holes (don't quote me on this, I'm pretty out of touch with all things hockey lately). If that's the case I can't see why some prospects would be off the table.

They likely won't give up Brannstrom after going hard to get him I doubt. Thomson is a total question mark to me but I'd say no there too. I'd look at guys who have been around a couple years as possibilities. Brown, Chlapik and Gus seem like candidates. JBD I couldn't say. Probably not, but for the right deal anything's possible I'm my opinion.

I see your point, but now that Vancouver is in the proposed playoff plan, the NJ deal is probably off the table. As you pointed out in another post, it is unlikely SJ offers their 1st, even for Vince Dunn. Add to that, unless I read wrong, it hasn't even been established that SJ can take on Allen's contract. I would still take the Montreal offer of 2 2nds, but if we can get prospect like Struble thrown in, sure why not. I just wouldn't let the deal hinge on the small add.

I cant see us trading Struble the exact words of Bergevin on struble were " He's a Greek God" also if struble was a couple of days younger he would have went in this year's draft he has a really late birthday. On top LHD is our weakest position. How about Dunn for 2 2nd and brook and you could possibly add allen since hale has 1 year left.

Assuming montreal beats Pittsburgh than loses in the 1st playoff round would you trade him straight up for the 16th overall pick

Something like

16 OVA for dunn, Allen, 3rd

Or is that worst that 2 2nd and Allen coming back.

Why Brannstrom has a much high upside than Dunn.

Chabot
Brannstrom is perfectly fine for the years to come.

Since you said in a heartbeat I guess the value favors STL what would you think would be a fair offer for both teams? Putting your bias aside.

16 ova

For dunn, allen 2nd?
We don't own our 2nd. You have it, remember? I would take a 1st over 2 2nds any day, was my point. I would even take the 28-31 OA before the 2 2nds, if Montreal makes it to the final four. Some NJ fans were okay with Vancouver's 1st, (if they get it), for Dunn and Allen. That might give us some perspective on what is fair for both teams.

I am kind of shocked St. Louis fans are okay with these proposals. I'd much rather keep Dunn if I were them.
Frankly, I find the whole premise of Dunn being used as the incentive to move an unwanted contract as dumb.

And all of the "value" that Blues are getting back in these deals only make the premise look dumber and dumber.

I don't think any of us want to trade Dunn. I think the point some of us are trying to make, is that we may not have a choice. To get Pietrangelo signed, it is likely someone we like has to go to get a team to take on Allen's contract.

Obviously this is dependent on if the Devils buyout Schneider but I'd be down for this. Marty being with the Devils in the front office could help Allen as well.

Good chance Devils would include a forward prospect in this deal to give someone some playing time. We have way too many guys, a few which deserve NHL opportunities, and very little places to play them.

Since Schneider was brought up...

Player Cap Salary
Steen 5.75M 3.5M
Bozak 5M 4.25M
Allen 4.35M 4M
Total 15.1M 11.75M

Schneider 6M 6M X 2 years

Schneider has the worst contract of the group because it has a 2nd year, and his performance has been really bad the past few years (along with injury concerns). What makes this somewhat palatable for me is the fact that we get huge savings year one.

The blues would save 9.1M in cap next season, and allows them to sign Petro. Losing Bozak for nothing and replacing Allen with Schneider hurts for sure. Schneider and Husso can battle it out for the backup job next season.

For the Devils, it allows them to get rid of Schneider, without buying out (longer term cap hit), while also being able to pick some assets up along the way.

They can keep Allen and Bozak for the full year if they want, flip right away with salary retention for picks or wait and see how the team does and flip at the deadline. It's 11.75M in Salary coming in for them, and 12M going out (6M X 2 years). Steen is the worst contract of the 3 for sure, so I'm not sure if there would be any takers if Jersey wanted to retain and flip, but at least it's just one year of pain for him and he is still a serviceable bottom sixer.

Either way, they turn Schneider into more options and the ability to gain some positive assets and a clean slate going into the 21-22 season.

Bozak and Steen would both have to waive their NTC's so that's probably what makes this a no go from the start. But how does this work value wise?

100%.

I'd hope that if they were ever thinking to move him the Leafs would find a way to make it happen.

If we have to attach value to bozak or Allen, Army would for sure go retention, then picks, then a player like Blais well before trading a player of Dunn’s caliber. Dunn has no arbitration rights and won’t be that expensive. It seems silly to trade dunn just to relieve cap.

Can someone sell Dunn on me? I'll admit to only seeing a few Blues games a year, but he just seems like a young bottom pairing D man that plays very limited minutes but with 2nd pair upside. A guy to play on PP2 and ideally not on your PK. A guy that projects as a totally solid middle of the roster player. But is that guy worth a first, a cap dump and a 3rd? Sounds crazy to me.

obviously this doesn't tell the whole story, but:

and yes, top 4 DMen (which Dunn already is) do go for 1st round picks all the time.

He's an elite skater, great puck-mover, and his goal-scoring numbers have been really good, especially when you factor in lower minutes. Now, he still has some work to do defensively because otherwise he'd be with Pietrangelo on a more regular basis, instead of just when we need offense. Since we have the luxury of sheltering, that's what we do. He can QB a the top PP unit, he has here at times. It's hard to find a good comp because on a worse team, he'd be getting bigger minutes, so would his offense sky-rocket or would he be more exposed defensively?

Him being a LHD was already going to be an issue for Ottawa as we already have Bran ,Wolanin and Chabot on that side, was just checking if he was that physical defensive guy..That we need so badly....Have any of those guys lying around ??

Dunn is feisty, but he's on the smaller end. He'll have some big hits here and there, but he needs to be paired with a solid defensive defenseman. If you need a physical defensive guy, Dunn shouldn't be your target. He's more of a feisty, puck-mover.

He's on 3rd pair because he isn't a shutdown caliber guy to put with Parayko on the 2nd pair and he isn't top-pair quality yet to put with Pietrangelo. If we used Pietrangelo as the shutdown guy and Parayko as a regular 2nd pair, then I think he'd be successful there.
