OT: Video Game Thread Part VII

Have any of you played Gloomhaven on PC? I've never played the board game, but love turn-based stuff, and it does look pretty fun. Seems like a deck-builder too?
I have played GH on Tabletop Simulator with a friend. This friend has also played the PC game and really likes and recommends it. I myself have been waiting for it to go on proper sale. I have already spent too much on the board game...

We have both the physical and Steam versions and have Kickstarted the next game, Frosthaven. The digitial version is a faithful, well-done recreation.

Gloomhaven is the best board game ever made. It's one of those games where many bits of simplicity stack incredibly well and form an immense amount of variation. It has deck building elements to it, but they're not super often. You get access to 2 new cards every time your character levels up, basically. But each card has a top (usually attack) and bottom (usually movement), so the use for each card has variability as well. Then there's a second deck that you draw from for modifiers every time you make an attack. That you also build up over time. So it's sort of two light deck-builders in one.

For solo play, you control 2 separate characters, each with their own individual decks/hands/items. Once you get used to the game, you can play up to 4 separate characters at once. The game scales the difficulty to the number of player characters. Certain classes play better with 2 and some with 4, so playing something like a Soothsinger will be a very different experience depending on how many characters are in the game.

That's high praise, and sounds like a ton of fun. Picked it up on sale and I'll give it a spin tonight.

Gloomhaven update.

I went through all the tutorials and they do a solid job at breaking down the fundamentals.

Decided to go with a Brute and a Scoundrel for the first mission. Seemed like a good mix. High mobility, good damage bonuses for the Scoundrel and a tanky damage dealer and soaker for Brute.

Visited the merchant and picked up healing potions for each, and I think a poison dagger and boots of striding. Is gold hard to come by in the game? Should I be hanging on to it?

Entered the dungeon, cleared the first room quite easily. but made a few mistakes. Like I picked two cards that I thought would work a certain way, but I kinda miscalculated and didn’t fully understand the effects of the action. I think it was something about dealing extra damage if your ally is also adjacent to an enemy.

So then i cleared the second room again pretty easily. Was never in danger but was pretty suboptimal in card use.

Then I got to the third room - which I only realized was there halfway through the previous fight. So I probably hadn’t been as careful with my cards and burns. I basically ran out of cards after one round. Scoundrel actually got killed without getting a turn.

I had a blast, and I can see how co-op would be really fun too. There’s a lot of depth to the game and it’s unforgiving. Every move counts.

I’ll give it another go tomorrow. Ran out of time. Are those two decent starting crew? I started thinking maybe a Crag and a Tinkerer.

Brute and Scoundrel are a good starting combo. Stick to them for your first game.

Don't worry about spending the gold. You really need those store items. Healing and especially stamina positions are very important. Boots of Striding are also really good.

One thing I'm wondering is what's the best way to move around? Like after I clear a room, what's my best move? It feels like I'm forced to use cards I don't want to use just to move, loot, and get to the next room. Is there a best way to do this? Long rest just before going in or something?

That's kinda the big question of the game, when to rest. It's really dependant on the situation and the scenario you are playing. A rest before opening a door is would always be nice but are you losing too many cards this way? On the other hand can you survive if you rest in the middle of the room? Cloak of invisibility really helps here as you can go invisible and safely long rest the next turn.

The adaptation to PC is very close to the Real experience! I dont found Bugs or problems!

If you want to play alone or your friends havent time. Buy it! It is worth every penny in my eyes!

Some classes are flat out better than others, but every class is viable. There's one particular example of a class that I think is AWFUL at its stated design, but makes a perfectly solid melee glass cannon. That's an unlockable, though.

From what I remember of the starter classes, none are too much better or worse than the others. The Scoundrel was my least favorite class including the unlockables, but using it alongside another melee you control like you decided would probably be a lot easier. For me, I could almost never get the positional bonuses. Very smart of you to avoid that particular frustration.

I believe it's generally considered "better" to buy cheaper items and use most of your Gold for...something else. I don't want to spoil you.

Make sure to try out Astro's Playroom. It's a fantastic introduction to the haptic feedback of the controller mixed in with a nice little nostalgia trip. I don't typically enjoy platformers, but it was a blast to play.

I actually did try that out but it was way back in winter of 2020 right after the PS5 came out when my neighbor got his. Looking forward to diving into deeper though.

Well I did a couple more run-throughs of the first mission, and a couple more failures to report. Ha!

It's always at the 3rd room. I'm getting a bit better at card economy, trying to keep all my resting only when I absolutely need it. Even then, there are times I have no choice but to burn cards to avoid death. That tells me I'm in the wrong place and taking damage (or extra turns) that I shouldn't need - so, basically, sub-optimal puzzle solving.

Gonna keep trying!

Nice. I don’t have as much motivation to grind the game this year. I might get there eventually if I fall into a Trout.

I've never done Diamond Dynasty before, so I'm all in. Don't see myself doing this annually.

My pulls were shit. Ohtani and then nothing really besides JRam (who I had) at 90+. I bought 100+ cards early for a lot of different guys though -- like Cortes, Chisholm, Ward, Musgrove, McClanahan, Wright -- and made bank. Haven't sold most of them either.
