Mete is juuuuuust fine ..he's a 19 year old 4th rounder that made the NHL for crying out loud, that in itself is quite the feat, im proud of him, didnt score any goals yet, but they will come, you could see all the chances he had this year, they will go in eventually, and alot of those potential goals you dont need a "laser beam" super shot either

but he was the fastest defenseman ive seen in 20 years easy, probably quicker than subban at top speed
and a underrated passer, thats whats going to make him stay in the NHL, he will be a 40 point dman in due time,at least we need him to be

last thing this kid needs is the AHL

What the management says matter since they are the one making the decision on Mete.
The management wants to make the playoffs, and not having Mete hurts those chance. Mete is our best LD after all.

Getting stronger and working on his shot are mostly done during the summer.

the point is they can say what they want, doesn't mean it will hold true.

In the AHL he'll have time and space to try using his shot more then he would in the NHL.

But we don't seem to be able to develop players very well so it wouldn't surprise me if they made a mistake with him.

He's already fine as a bottom pairing defender sure... But he gets limited minutes and limited situational experience. If the option is him playing bottom pairing minutes with little to no special teams in the NHL vs him be a top pairing AHL defenseman getting 25+ minutes a night with both powerplay and short handed time on ice than I'll put him in the AHL every time. Call him up if a top 4 defender goes down and put him in that same role in the NHL.

If we want him to be more than a bottom pairing defender than we need him to not only get minutes, but get experience on special teams. And ideally, experience in a position to succeed.

I would prefer to see him and Juulsen both start the year in the AHL. Let them be the first call ups when there are injuries. Plug them into top 4 roles when they are called up. Then after the deadline, when the rosters expand, should the Habs be in the playoff hunt, call them up and use them in whatever role they are capable of for the rest of the season.

Is he capable of being an NHL defencemen now? Obviously. Is it necessarily best for his development? I'm not convinced it is.

I found Subban quick with the puck, but without it, he really wasn’t anything special. If that makes sense

No defenceman seem to be developing very well in the ahl. Juulsen has been the only bright spot and he wasn’t even playing for most of their season. I’d be worried about sending mete and juulsen back down. Besides, mete played too much in the nhl already. I don’t think it would benefit him. Juulsen I think is just one of those guys who plays the game the same no matter the level. I don’t think he’ll benefit either.

To be fair, it's not like there is a great pool of D down in Laval. Lernout has progressed very nicely considering what he has to work with and Juulsen is looking great. I'm a bit disappointed with Bourque, but I never really expected him to turn into much.

I think sending Mete down next year where he can get top pairing minutes with Juulsen and play in all situations might be very good for him, but it depends on what kind of minutes he'll be getting if he is up. Fleury will be in Laval as well. Hopefully Juulsen & Mete are the beginning of a Defense overhaul.

Mete will need to compete for a spot next year for sure. It won't be given to him and rightly so. He will need to beat out some of if not all of: Reilly, Benn, Schlemko, Valiev & (possibly) whoever we pick in the draft and hopefully some new young D that we either sign or trade for.

The good news is that he can go down to Laval without having to clear.

Would prefer he plays next year in AHL and work on translating his offense.

If mete and juulsen starts the year in the AHL

Youre asking your GM to then fix those 2 spots at the NHL level .. he brought in schlemko, alzner, benn last year, morow and streit ... and you still have faith he can find people for those 2 spots ..

just let juulsen and mete play in the NHL in bottom pair or middle pair who cares imo, if we finish last so be it, better draft pick and we'll know if theyre the real deal or not

I have faith he doesn't need to find people for those two spots because I don't think the bottom pairing defenders on a given team are super important. Especially if you have waiver exempt depth ala Juulsen and Mete who can be called up on a whim.

As it stands, Benn/Juulsen/Lernout will be in competition for the #3RD role. It's a long shot that Juulsen surpasses Petry to get into the top 4.

Valiev/Reilly/Mete/Schlemko will be in competition for the #1LD and #3LD spots. Obviously none of those guys are likely to be top pairing guys, but all of them are fine as bottom pairing defenders getting limited and cherry picked minutes. Some could even surprise and push Alzner down the lineup on the left side. And Alzner, albeit significantly overpaid for the role, would be absolutely fine on the bottom pair.

So quite frankly, I'm not asking for MB to do anything other than find us a real top pairing LD. It's not our bottom pairings that broke the camels back so to speak. A Schlemko/Benn, or Reilly/Lernout or any combination of the above players is fine as bottom pairing and #7 depth.

We certainly don't need to rush Mete and Juulsen into the NHL to "fix" our bottom pairing. Especially if it means they get limited minutes and usage.

Well I've been holding out hope that Lefebvre and his staff are fired but even if not I would still consider it. I just worry that with Mete and Juulsen in the NHL, their offensive games won't develop well and they will end up more bottom pairing D's at least on a contending team.

Since there is no consensus on this board and now to derail the Valiev signing thread, let's make a new thread to discuss specifically Victor Mete role next year

I for one disagree strongly he should be in the AHL next year. He had an amazing year last season and if the organization felt he wasnt ready, they would have send him back to junior after his (very good) WJC tournament.

To me, he have absolutely nothing to learn playing in Laval and his place is next to Shea Weber.

Mete - Weber
Alzner - Petry
Schlemko - Benn
(Reilly, Valiev as extras)

Juulsen in the AHL

I'm not saying that's a great looking defence, we are probably heading toward a bottom 10 finish (like we should) but it wouldnt hurt Mete to play top minutes already with a veteran like Weber.

Looking forward to hear other arguments going both ways

I would be surprised if he is sent to the AHL.

But I don't want him paired with Weber. He needs a sheltered role so that he can develop, throwing him into the fire so he has to face the leagues best day in day out is just dumb.

I think his play should dictate where he goes.

Still a young guy, not everyone's progression is linear. Some players get worse as they go along.

If he plays good enough them keep him up our depth guys can land us a 5th or 7th rounder. If he is shakey than let him play in the AHL top minutes.

He beat everyone out last year at camp. I expect the same this year. Management is in win now mode and will generally go with the best 6 available, although it may consider waiver status if two players are close: Juulsen and Mete don't have to clear waivers, Valiev, Lernout, and Reilly do.

should never have been in the NHL. Please stop rushing 19/20 year olds to the NHL. f*** it's annoying. He needs to work on his offensive game. 7 pts in 49 games isn't going to cut it. That said we'll have to see how he looks at camp. The Habs suck at developing players so wouldn't surprise me if he's on the team and down the road people complain about his offense.

no thanks. Mete is gonna be insane.

He should go a year in the AHL with Bouchard tho! he would learn alot more there while still playing against a tough match up!

Rielly should be able to take his spot this season and whos knows maybe he'll flourish as i think he has a nice tool box!
