Canucks defense is mobile with decent puckmovers and have some size and bite. I know things change with trades and injuries but that d line-up looks promising and young. Nothing is ever set in stone and things change (trades or someone else amazes management).

Unless Willander blows everyone’s socks off, I think Mancini (or a depth UFA veteran or Juulsen) will start the year and Willander will start in the NHL.

If Wilander gets into the Canuck lineup in the dying days of the 2024-25 season; and through training camp next year, they'll gain a pretty complete assessment of where he's at.

And I don't think he'll be necessarily competing with Mancini for a job. Still, it's pretty amazing how the right-side of the Canuck blueline is suddenly stacked.

They've now got Hronek, Myers, Mancini, Wilander and Juulsen, if the gets re-signed. My guess is that Wilander sticks--even if it's in a 'depth role' to start his career in Vancouver.

Depending on how well Wilander shows and how much trust Tochett has in him, that might make Myer's a valuable trade chip. He's big and blocks shots, and at his current contract, there are a fair few teams with space for him as a depth guy.

He’s got a NMC this year and next year, and I doubt he’d be willing to move it.

Myers has enjoyed a career rejuvenation the last couple of seasons--easily the best two years of his Canuck career. I think a lot of the credit probably goes to Foote and Gonchar.

And at $3m a season, he suddenly becomes a big cap advantage for the Canucks. So I doubt he's going anywhere. But he's really not an impediment to Wilander's development on the right side of the blueline. I think Tocchet and the Canucks probably introduce him to the NHL in sheltered minutes, with a lot of O-zone starts to begin with.

But in Wilander and Mancini on the right side; and the likes of D-Petey, Kudryavtsev and Mynio on the left side--suddenly the Canucks are 'stacked' with young d-men.

And when was the last time you could say that about 'any' Canuck team?

Exactly. With Hughes and Hronek still in their primes, this has the potential to be the one of the best young bluelines in the entire NHL......with years of runway ahead of them.

I've been on these boards long enough to know that in all likelihood, 3 years from now only half of those guys are playing for this team in a meaningful role.

It does look promising though.

Like I’ve been saying for a while, if you can get even two of Willander, Pettersson, Mancini, Kudryavtsev, and Mynio as legit NHL defencemen, that’s a huge success. If you come out of that group with three, that’s outstanding. If they can be difference-making top-4 minute eaters, that’s franchise changing.

Really like what I see with Mancini. You can tell he's not quite the finished package but love his skating ability and confidence to carry the puck and make a play from the back end. We desperately need more of that in our bottom two D pairings. Looking forward to seeing his development.

I can't see Mancini or Willander being a #7 and spending extended stretches in the pressbox. Maybe they do some sort of 3 man rotation for 2 spots with the rookies, but makes more sense imo for 1 of them to be an Abby when the roster is healthy.

Hoping Forbort gets re-signed and he and Junior compete for the 3LD spot. Some sort of rotation to keep both in game shape while all 4 LHD are healthy.

Then Mancini and Willander ideally shuttle back and forth between the top pairing in Abby and the 3rd pairing in Van. Think it's better for both guys to be getting 22+ minutes in Abby than sitting for 5+ games in the pressbox. Even alternating games or whatnot would still mean they're missing 50% of the possible games played, which isn't ideal imo.

Not sure which RH guy will start where next season, but i do expect one to start in Aby but both to see a significant number of NHL games (assuming Willander hits the ground running as I expect).

The emergence of DPetey and Mancini, both of whom look very promising, really changes the outlook of everything.

Willander should be getting the DPetey development plan, let him play in the A and let him be more offensive and let him build his confidence. NHL is not the right place for him to experiment and learn.

Mancini should be up with Dpetey next season.

At times the AHL is such a 'goon league'. I was concerned all the time that Lekkerimaki spent there. And sure enough, he did miss some time after some of the cheap shots he received.

Flashy, 20-year old goal-scorers, who aren't the biggest guys, do get singled out for special, physical punishment in the league. And the Abby Canucks really didn't have anyone to come to his rescue.

So if Wilander spends any time in Abbotsford, it won't be very long. I could see him arriving with the parent Canucks lineup even earlier than EP25--who only spent half a season in the AHL.
