Prospect Info: Victor Mancini (159th overall 2022 by NYR)

i'm not interested in shitting all over a prospect i know next to nothing about but i don't know why the canucks would ask for fortescue over him or why the rangers wouldn't give up fortescue but would give up mancini if mancini is such a good prospect. fortescue is a guy who'll play 4 years in college and then maybe get an ahl contract

Yeah, seems worth pointing out that his defensive numbers with the Rangers this year are horrific.

Amongst defenders with at least 150 minutes at even strength, he’s got the worst SCA/60 rate, and the second worst xGA/60, in the league. Can see why the team likes his tools but based on his results so far he is definitely a project.

He's in his first full year as a pro, so I don't think anyone should expect him to be a full time NHLer. He's got 3 years in NCAA. He only has 30 AHL and 15 NHL games so far as a pro. Should keep him in the A for the rest of the season really.

Oh yeah, wasn’t intended to be a slight on him. Just don’t think we should expect he will be an NHLer this year or even to start next season.

Not going to take long before everyone else is on board with what NYR fans, reputable intelligent hockey lifers, and now executives/scouts are indicating.

Looked impressive in the nhl this year, in the half dozen games I saw, Just not quite ready for the big show, but he's got all the tools to succeed and the toolbox, classic late bloomer dev curve.

It seems like he has tools that have impressed people but the question would be whether he can put them together to be an actual effective NHL defender. What is his IQ like, etc.

This guy is a Punisher........you watch his hits and they are done with some nasty intent. He's a guy that you pray can play cus come playoffs he's gonna be a hammer..........and in a 7 game series he has the kind of hitting ability to knock guys out of a series........

For what it's worth there's been some reporting that Drew Fortescue was the Canucks first choice. Wonder if Mancini was a distant second choice or fairly interchangeable (with how week our right side depth is this might be a blessing).

I have no problem with them picking up an AHL project. I doubt he was a major factor in the trade. But lots of people here were saying things like "at least we don't have to play Juulsen anymore." I'm no Juulsen fan but Mancini has a long ways to go to even be a Juulsen.

I'm genuinely curious what he'd look like at wing though - you can certainly get away with being more of a toolsy player there.

I’ve been doing a lot of digging on him from fan and scouting reports to actual footage of him playing. He’s excellent at boxing out using his body position and stick to lift and impede other players in front of the net and gain leverage against the boards. But he’s often way too stuck on watching the player he’s defending and loses track of the puck way too often. He needs to be more aware of players and the puck at the same time.

While he’s also good at zone exits with passes or rushing it out, that’s the extent of his ability. In the offensive zone he supports the play ok but he most of the time defers and is passive. His shot is hard but it’s not very accurate and he doesn’t take very many shots and will prefer to dump it back in play or pass. That said, I think he’s better than Juulsen now. He’s much less careless with and without the puck and can actually get the puck out quicker.

I don’t see the top pairing or top 4 that some Rangers and TSN analysts were saying, but he looks to be a potential solid bottom pairing defensive RD with PK utility.

Ty Mueller is from the same program and also put up pedestrian numbers. Both he and Mancini are producing respectably in the AHL. Perhaps it's the college team's system?

It could have just been hearsay. Every time I hear "the Canucks wanted this guy" I wonder who really released that info to the likes of a Dhaliwal or Dregger

I'm not sure where Canucks Army gets their info on prospects. But I think they really do try to talk to Canuck scouts, rather than relying on Internet scuttlebutt.
