You guys don't understand what he is doing. He is NOT GOING TO PUNT THE FUTURE away because the media and fans are antsy. We have a bunch of young players coming very soon. And cap space. We are not good enough yet. I don't mind his approach right now.

I do because Mrazek is worthless. Veleno is too... but Mrazek is worthless at double the price.

And waiting till 2030 won’t due justice. He’s a failed GM at this point unless he can do something impactful w current assets. Do you not understand the urgency after 7 years now? Time to poop or get off the toilet.

Why is everyone freaking out over such a small trade
I'm freaking out because I don't like Mrazek as a goalie. Never have after he got exposed in his first go around here as a guy who massively cheats. If you can cross-ice pass on him, it's going in the net because his angles were always way too aggressive. Any other goalie and 35 year old plug... I'm not saying anything. I f***in hate Mrazek because he and Jimmy Howard's groin killed the last couple years of okay hockey we had before 2016. Howard was good until he rushed back and hurt himself again. Mrazek was good until he got arrogant and butthurt they didn't deal Jimmy.

We also desperately need playoff experience. Desperately. The difference between an 18th overall pick and a 14th overall pick are negligible, but playoff experience is incredibly valuable.

Do you think a 2nd or 3rd round pick is going to be the difference in our future? Really?

This is very rich considering the goaltending we've gotten the past month...

I don't mind this move.

Shores up the crease for next year, opens the possibility of shipping out Lyon and arguably improves our center depth.

‘Shore up crease for next year’.

My brother in Christ we traded an expiring Husso and then turned around to trade for someone as bad as Husso with an extra year, and a 4th line center.

Mrazek hasn’t had a good year since 2021. And where was he? Carolina.

Veleno was bad for a long while. He's a defensive 4th C who can't win face offs. The contract was a mistake, so getting off of him is a win. Smith will hold the fort down for the regular season and provide a bit more offense. Meanwhile, Mrazek and Talbot will be the goalie tandem while Cossa is getting worked in. Not a long term guy but he's also not signed long term either.

Opens up room for us to bring up a guy next year or sign someone better for that depth center role, which is great, Veleno is capped in terms of what he can provide for us in this system.

Hawk fan here

Last year Mrazek was fantastic behind bad team

This year Mrazek is atrocious and lost plenty of games on his own. Maybe next year he is back to being good. He seems to fluctuate on good/bad season by season

Smith is mostly cooked but can pass on 4th line for periods of being ok or slightly meh. But he also has nights in which he is pretty terrible

Dont really understand this trade from Detroit POV

Hawks GM said he wanted to do right for Mrazek since he had no future here in Chicago

Veleno sucked every time I saw Wings play in recent years so I dont expect anything from him here in Chicago

Hawks opened nearly $2M in cap room for next year so that is a +
