Vegas has granted permission for a team to speak with Cassidy and will do so on a case by case basis

Is there any kind of precedent for this whatsoever? How can you fire someone and then prevent them from finding another job?
He wasn't actually fired is the simple explanation. People just use that term too often. He was removed from his position but is still under contract and still employed by VGK.

It was obviously Toronto. The tweet in the OP is missing the part where McCrimmon said "he was granted permission and it didn't come to fruition".

So, Cassidy is not going to in interview for a team. He already did, and wasn't hired. Knowing that he wasn't given permission to interview for LA or Edmonton, that leaves Toronto.

Read some were it was the leafs who was granted permission, find it hard to believe they spoke with Cassidy and went with hiller tho lolol

Im no fan of Butch, but why are they holding this man hostage? They fired him. Let him go.
He's under contract with Vegas for another season. They don't have to let him go. He's not allowed to "quit" and just sign with another team, either.

They don't want him going to another Pacific team, like the Oilers for example.
May think he lost the locker room or whatever, but I think they don't want him to have a short competent lifespan with the likes of McDavid.

He was relieved of his duties but is still under contract. They are still paying him. And non-compete agreements happen with terminations in the business world all the time. Like literally every day.

Yea, sure ok. Cassidy is who the Leafs need right now. Give it a rest. Hiller is probably a better fit right now for what they are trying to do. I'd rather have a guy who can relate to players, than some old prick who is screaming and yelling all the time.

Ever heard of non-competes?

Salespeople have to deal with this situation all the time. Companies love to try and restrict people's right to earn a living, but it can't really be enforced.
I'm talking about in the context of the NHL. Coaches are fired and get new jobs all the time. Has there been another case in the NHL where this has happened?

So anyone but the Kings, Oilers and Leafs.
No, it was obviously the Leafs because no other team was searching for a head coach. And we know LA and Edmonton weren't granted permission.
Teams with a coach can interview to replace their current coach (I'm looking at you Joe Sakic).
Sure, but highly unlikely that this happened.

I mean we just f***ing saw what happened with the Oilers. I doubt other teams want to make the same mistake.

It's morally and ethically f***ed up.

One thing all the people saying "I'd gladly sit at home for 4.5 million" and "He's still under contract with Vegas" aren't taking into account is that this hurts Bruce Cassidy professionally and could actually cost him money in the right situation. Imagine if there's a bidding war for his services but he's not able to sign the best contract for himself and his family because VGK is blocking potential employers from signing him.

You should probably read up more on Tom Dundon as an business owner. He's not a good person.
Oh I'm well aware of his subprime lending and general scumbaggery, but considering most NHL owners are billionaires that typically goes without saying. It's a low bar, but I guess at least he wasn't hanging out with a certain financier like Leonsis in Washington or Harris with New Jersey or Dolan with the Rangers (or Burkle with the Penguins or Bonderman with Seattle).

Anyway, plenty of owners have been deeply tied to organized crime in the past (and present), just look at Norris, the Wirtz's, Pegula (shoutout La Nova Pizzeria, official sponsor of the Buffalo Sabres), DeBartolo, the Bronfmans, Jacobs, Kokusai Green. And then plenty are just literal criminals like Aquilini, Gaglardi, Samueli, etc. (these are all well established and reported on/adjudicated so no risk of libel mods, don't worry - I left out plenty who probably deserved to be named but played it safe).

Words mean something. It really amazing this far into the Cassidy saga that there is still confusion/lack of understanding of the difference between 'fired' and 'relieved of duties' . It may be (and pretty much is) a scummy move for Vegas to pull these shenanigans, but they're well within their legal rights to do what they are doing. Cassidy is under contract for another year and will be paid his salary even if doing nothing.

Asking an Albertan to read is like asking someone from Alabama to not partake in family love.

Please note: Born and raised Albertan, also this is as much of a joke about them banning books as it is at other Albertans
