As a person from a western family, who was raised in Toronto, and now lives in Vancouver, I think I can understand both sides. I won't go into the political and economic roots. (Though I understand them. Half my grandfather's farm was seized by the ancestor of TD Canada Trust in the dirty thirties.). Hockey wise, I think the main thing is the media attention focused on the Leafs despite their frequent hockey irrelevance. It's a function of market size, of course, but it still galls people. The fact that there are thousands upon thousands of people like me, Leaf fans living in Canuckland, also irritates a lot of people.
Two of the very worst "journalists" in any market I know make matters worse. Tony Gallagher, a print reporter who moonlights for the sports station 1040, is very irritating. It's not just that he has a voice made for mime. It's that he is a tinfoil hat, watch out for the black helicopters conspiracy theorist. When there is some minor controversy, he explains it as a plot by either Toronto or New York or both to do down the Canucks. That gets some of the Nuck faithful going.
The other guy is Dave Pratt, whose family name in British slang is deadly accurate. He is the Rob Ford of radio sports. It's not just his figure or his well known indulgence in the bottle. He goes on violent rants that do resemble Ford under the influence. A segment of the market laps it up, which probably explains why he remains employed despite a series of, well, Ford lite issues.
Sports radio does appeal to mouth breathers in a lot of markets so none of this is unique to Vancouver. It's just that this slice of the market seems larger here.
But most if us will just go for a walk by the ocean and enjoy the sight if the mountains. PS. An eagle flew right by my window yesterday morning.
