I like this move a lot.
First, it's pathetic that Benning is still there, let's get that out of the way. And I'm curious about Boudreau's contract.
With that said, Gillis came after Vigneault and they managed to make it work.
But in a vacuum, this is a good hire for the Canucks.
1. We needed a legitimate established coach, no more neophytes with zero experience.
2. Look at his record with offensive players. Scorers have great seasons under Bruce almost across the board. Our team is built around offense, it's not a bad thing to play to that strength.
3. Guys seem to really like playing for him. Petey and Boes (injured) have been bad, Horvat's been bad, the whole team looks morose and checked out. I think Boudreau will help these guys find the fun in playing again.
4. He has an insane coaching record. I get that roster means a lot, but it's not meaningless that his overall points percentage is .635, and he has done this with 3 different teams.
5. The criticisms of him tend to revolve around 'can't win game 7's' which is most likely a quirk of small sample size more than anything. It's hilarious that people think that other coaches are waiting until game 7 to bring out their best strategies and Boudreau can't counter it. No coach can afford to keep some revelatory strategy in the bag on the off chance that they get to a game 7, and hockey is still hockey even when the stakes are raised.
6. I want to reiterate that we desperately needed a coach with some experience, cache, and balls. Having everybody working on their first ever NHL job in their role is the blind leading the blind.
7. Benning NEEDS to go. And our ownership sucks.
And finally, I wish Green luck. He's a good coach and he will thrive elsewhere (perhaps after a couple of years off). Basically no coaches are legitimately successful in their first stop in the league, it takes a lot of learning on the job and that means mistakes.
But it was time.
I like this.
