Why is that?

The GM who traded for him in PIT gave up a 1st and Hallander. I don’t really see the difference in downgrading that 1st and Podkolzin.
The difference is that kap was acquired with the thought that he would develop into more than he has become. Time has passed, and he doesn't have the value he used to.

That isn’t true. He’s scored at a 50+ pt page in Pittsburgh.

For some reason I though Podkolzin was not viewed positively at this point with the Nucks and available so obviously I’m out of touch.

Because that wasn’t a good trade made by said GM. Pitt overpaid. Kapenan is a middle six winger. He’s not worth a mid 1st and a then B / B+ level prospect.

why overpay twice. Learn from your mistakes.

I mean, he is. And Rutherford learning from his mistakes is a hilarious take.
Come on. You know Pitt overpaid for him. And he’s not remotely worth a 15th OA pick and solid prospect (the price paid by Pitt). .

Devin Toews fetched two late seconds. No way Kapenan is traded for a substantially better package.

Do players like Toews get moved for two late seconds regularly?

Prior to Kapanen’s deal we saw players like Zucker, Coleman, Kase and Pageau all moved for similar packages.

I don't think that you are too far off in value, assuming the deal is done before Halak's bonius kicks in (after next game).

Canucks fans won't do this though, as Podkolzin has shown enough this year to be pretty optimistic about him. I expect he will be fan favorite for a long time time in Vancouver.
