Can a Canucks fan explain why I'm seeing so many comments celebrating getting rid of the bad Desharnais and Heinen contracts and paying a premium to do so? It doesn't look like they really need to shed cap. If they were both buried, they'd be under $2M combined, and the team looks to have a substantial amount of room. What am I missing?

I'm not missing that at all. It's even in the thread title. But they paid a high price for rentals, considering they may well be a worse trade after the team and are sitting outside of the playoffs.
you brought up half the trade and I brought up the other half... dumped cap and received two effective players

a 1st round pick looks fair to me, trades like this happen every trade deadline. I think the Canucks are a better team.

what were you expecting?

I get the move for both.

Petterson is a legit 2nd pair two-way defender. Penguins had to move on with him being UFA. Getting either a middle of the pack 25 or 26 1st is good work by Dubas.

Drew O' conner has shown flashes of potential but never seems to consistently put anything together. Still a decent depth forward. Heinen will replace his production.

The prospect is a why the hell not from pens perspective. Take a chance on a kid with a decent shot.

Deshnernais while it sounds like hes not great is something the penguins desperately needed, a bigger body and it sounds like hes good on the PK. He should slot it on the 3rd pair with EK and Letang ahead of him.

You think petterson moves the needle that much . 1st round pick is being tossed around like garden salad tonight.

I have no idea, but the team is floundering and if they try and re-tool and miss the playoffs the next two seasons, the best defenseman in the league will walk as a free agent.

I do think there's a very real chance that the team is better tonight than they were this morning, however.

After all the moves the only asset I like is chytll. Hes gonna surprise everyone. Hope you guys move him to 2c. Hes gonna be solid.

He will probably be 2C, I think he's been really underrated. I also think M Pettersson has gotten pretty underrated too, his stats compared to the rest of the penguins are pretty damn good.

Accruing all the assets from both trades,

OUT: JT Miller, Heinen, Desharnais, Brannstrom, Dorrington, Fernstrom. 1st
IN: Chytil, M. Pettersson, Mancini, O'Connor

So we move out a problem in the locker room, and then clear out perceived bad contracts in Heinen and Desharnais with the 1st, and get a viable middle-6 C and pending UFA top pair LD, RHD prospect and depth wing (who's also UFA)? Not terrible...?

DeBrusk - Petey - Boeser
Hoglander - Chytil - Garland
Joshua - Suter - O'Connor
PDG - Blueger - Karlsson

Hughes - Myers
MPetey - Hronek
Soucy/ Forbort/ DPetey - Mancini/ Juulsen?

Lankinen/ Demko

I do hope we're #2C hunting or IDK what this team is doing.

I'd say the Sharks are one of the losers today for not getting in on Miller. Everyone knew Miller was going to be sold for less than he was worth. The Canucks were forced to trade him due to lockeroom issues and issues with the coach. Yet 30 other GMs were asleep
I absolutely agree. I would've traded all but 2 or 3 players for Miller. Canucks set themselves back years today by trading JT instead of Pettersson
