Confirmed Trade: [VAN/PIT] Marcus Pettersson, Drew O’Connor for Danton Heinen, Vincent Desharnais, Melvin Fernstrom, NYR's c. 2025 1st (top 13 protected)

With the distractions out of the way and rounding out the defense and adding a bit more depth I wouldn’t be surprised if the Nucks are a better team today than they were before.

Still have room to add too.

Just have to say, I wish more posters would take a level headed approach to evaluating trades like you have rather than just “lol canucks suck!”. Good job! 👏

O’Connor is interesting because he plays a likable game but the end results just haven’t been there. 6 goals in 53 games with decent ice time just isn’t what you want. That said - the Canucks have recently been very good at extracting the best from these kind of lower end middle six guys who can flash at a higher level…Suter, Blueger, Joshua (last year), Sherwood…seems like Vancouver just has a knack for elevating guys like DOC.

A lot of the optics will come down to getting MP (and DOC if he plays well) signed past this year. I can certainly buy that MP, Chytil, DOC and perhaps some cameos by Mancini make the Canucks better this year than a sulky Miller, Heinen and Desharnais.

But I can also buy that a year ago this would have been spun a lot differently. I think Vancouver did solid given the situation. But if MP walks, Chytil remains frail and JTM paces for 90-100 points in New York…there is certainly blow up in your face potential.

A fascinating day for the Canucks…

How are they suppose to convince Hughes to stay when they are collecting every Pettersson in the league??

Aren't they both up after next year? Like I said, both could be buried if needed, leaving less than $2M on the cap, and they have a ton of space next year, with not a lot of spots to fill.
...Desharnais was worse than useless, he was costing the 'Nucks when he was on the ice...getting rid of him is the definition of Addition by Subtraction...Heinen was, well, Heinen; a body that was moving around doing stuff but not really doing anything; give that shot to someone else who might show they work out better for the team...

More misses than hits. You want to keep Hughes you trade for players. You wanna lose Hughes you stockpile picks.
I would have held and picked but that's just me or packaged the nucks first round pick and rags pick and move up in draft or get a young NHL ready player in return. Hoarding 1st round picks is like hoarding gold coins in terms of hockey assets . 2nd round picks are silver coins.

Team needs to win now to keep Hughes

Can a Canucks fan explain why I'm seeing so many comments celebrating getting rid of the bad Desharnais and Heinen contracts and paying a premium to do so? It doesn't look like they really need to shed cap. If they were both buried, they'd be under $2M combined, and the team looks to have a substantial amount of room. What am I missing?

Desharnais actively sabotages the team when he's on the ice.

Heinen was bland. At times good, but alot of times did nothing, didn't add speed or tertiary scoring like we hoped.

Nice to get out of the additional years on both.

...maybe the Hughes' & the Pettersson's are close; maybe it's a ploy from Vancouver to collect all the Petterssons so they can also collect their best friends, the Hughes'...sneaky smart; makes ya think, eh??... :thumbu:

Pettersson was getting Pittsburgh a 1st round pick regardless of whom traded it. If he re-signs at a decent price that’ll be good value for the 1st

They traded a legit top line PWF and got an injury ridden middle 6er and a rental bottom pair D. Hilarious stuff.
I'd say the Sharks are one of the losers today for not getting in on Miller. Everyone knew Miller was going to be sold for less than he was worth. The Canucks were forced to trade him due to lockeroom issues and issues with the coach. Yet 30 other GMs were asleep
