Confirmed with Link: [VAN/NYR] JT Miller, Erik Brannstrom, & Jackson Dorrington for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and 1st 2025 (Top-13 Protected, Unprotected after)

Mr prediction: Chytil gets another concussion before the end of the season and has to retire.
Unfortunately I’ve thought a few times over the last 2 seasons that he might be on the brink of hanging them up. That said, every time he’s come back and he’s looked fantastic. His play has not been impacted by his concussions. Hope the best for this guy for a long career.

With the Cap going up, it won’t matter.

Every team is going to have room and have the same thoughts.
Typically I would be extremely pessimistic and conservative about the Canucks chance to sign a marquee UFA. Most often I don’t even think they should.

But—I do think Vancouver has a chance to convince a Marner or Rantanen for the opportunity to play with Quinn Hughes. They may have the cap space to sweeten the contract to the degree necessary to do it, too.

No pk, very solid defensively. He’s a smart player. I could see him being a weapon on the PK with his speed.

The last time he was passible defensively was like 4 years ago. You guys were talking about him playing very softly as well because of his extensive concussion history.

I don't see him fitting in with Tocchet, nor can we afford to give him over 60% offensive zone starts against bad comp the way he's had the last few years here. But we'll see what happens.

Kakko didn't have an NMC and wasn't destroying a promising core, though.

And it could have been much, much worse. I suspect Miller was only going to waive for NYR, so we got Keslered again. There's no retention on the contract, Brannstrom was never playing here again and Chytil is at the very least a serviceable 2C.

Cap space is indeed the best part of this deal, as is not having a malcontent declining player for the next seven years at a high cap hit.

There were two equal cancerous malcontents.

Very said to see Miller go, he was our heart and soul the last few years. Petey better step it the F up now. We are very thin down the middle but we've got a lot of cap flexibility now. Hopefully we can figure out a way to come out of this with some improvements and not taking a massive step backwards. I want to retain Boeser if we can and lock up Lankinen.

It's interesting that we just heard about him opening up his list yesterday. Maybe that results in more options after the 4 Nations?

Feels like a Kesler like situation. Eerie.

Edit: Just saw @thecupismine's post.

So JT opens his list. Mgmt reaches out to said “expanded list”. Teams all shoot him down. Canucks take best offer.

If, the media can be believed, his list just expanded, seems like a weird time to take a shit deal. (I think the media is full of shit.. when Friedman says “the feeling is…” it means it’s entirely speculation btw)

None of this appears to be a knee jerk move by the team given how well Miller has played yet how long he’s been in trade rumours, going back a couple seasons. To make the “should have got more!” exclamations as if “more” was easily and readily available is nonsense.

You are conflating Rangers’ fans’ desire for a rebuild/change with the value of the player in a trade. Lindgren is a defensive Dman on an expiring contract who has been logging top 4 minutes. I don’t want him but if healthy that’s an easy trade at the deadline. Kreider is aging but can still score goals and has a history of strong playoff performances. At $6.5M with two more years left a team looking to win now would be interested. Heck, we reportedly wanted to acquire him. Chytil is a huge LTIR risk and isn’t better than Kreider even right now given their age differences.
Disagree with you here. Current day Chytil is much better than current day Kreider.

This is exactly the same argument I saw after every single Benning trade.

They traded a f***ing 1st line center for scraps. There's no sugar coating it.
A first line centre on a team that was going nowhere. And a first line centre for maybe 2 more years. There’s a reason the return is what it is. People are overvaluing a 32 year old because he hasn’t yet seen a significant decline.

Also until we get another top centre this team can forget about "competing". God I hope management has a plan.
unless we get at least two new top 4 D and can actually retain them, we can forget about competing, regardless of our forwards

How great of a contract is it really when JT is turning 32 in a month, has 5 years left on his deal after this season with a NMC and a contract that is buyout proof?

It's something I personally was always concerned with - how the back end of that deal looks when Hughes and Pettersson are in their late 20s and should be at the peak of their ability.
The contract is a freaking steal. Sorry was a freaking steal.

In some ways trade has the scent, some would say odor, of a rebuild.

Get a fill-in at center who has couple of years on his contract. Hopefully increases value here and can be tradeable if the team wants to fully rebuild. If he sucks can be jettionsoned fairly quickly.

Get the first and you think, at a guess, that will be somewhere b/w 20 and 25. Rangers will make the playoffs it seems. Drafting here is crucial if they don't move the pick.

Get a youngish right shot d-man with size who might develop.

Get some cap space

Get rid of a contract that, long term, was going to dimish exponientally (although it means they lost the best player in the deal but Miller fragile mental state has to be considered)

Get something for a player that might not be being willing to sign here. (but did give up in Dorrington an interesting propects given his toughness)

Get rid of player who did not figure into the future (but too bad for Abby) and turned a waiver pick up into something.

Like some have said, you were never going to get true value for Miller. If you are thinking short term this is an obvious failure of a trade. But it does make some sense if you are thinking long term.

from reading the trade board, rangers fans universally like chytil and see him as a good all round player with offensive upside. the issue is simply the thin skull. at the very least he might do well on the pp for the canucks, a chance he didn't get much in ny.

rangers fans want kreider and lindgen gone, esepcially lindgren. this is in order to be better now.

whats with the Flames got a better package than the Canucks. typical hfboards. I rather have Cythil, the 1st rounder and Mancini, instead of Farabee.

If you are thinking long term, you keep Miller until the offseason and trade him for a better futures-orientated return.

What the Canucks did today is exactly what the Bonino, Sbisa and late 1st for Kesler trade was.

A team trying to "re-tool" and ending up failing to get present or future value for their asset.

As I've said, now we just need Miller to work his magic in new York. Have nyr suck juuuust enough that they keep their pick this year, then really turn on his charm and tank the team next season when the pick isn't protected.

Hello Gavin McKenna 😎

I assume somebody has already mentioned this, but I do not have time to read all 25 pages.
Unless the Rangers move up several places in the standings this year, which I doubt, the 1st round pick becomes an unprotected 2026 pick.
Rangers are aging and more likely to decline next season.
Any magic ticket giving us a chance at Gavin McKenna has value to me.
If Rangers go on a run before the trade deadline, Canucks might flip the pick for a player.
